You have to start somewhere and everyone so far is Niko, Skippy and me! No one has yet objected to this date.

I would also think that this far out, HelenH would be willing to accommodate us as a group should they have openings on a different date.

Yup I could bring my 80+AFTCO belt. We know the 50's are no match for the giants of the night! You bringing the steel leadered shark rigs?

I PM'd those 2 guys to make sure they know the time to get on board is NOW!

Seriously considering this. Never been on any kind of tuna trip before. Not set up with gear very well for this type of fishing. Have a Newell 447 that I use for bottom fishing, and one of my striper reels is a Stella 10000SW. The Newell is on an 8' "custom" Ugly Stick which works well for cod/haddock/pollock but is probably too light for yellowfin. If I grabbed a standup rod for the Stella somewhere do you think I'd get by? Did you see any similar setups on the last trip? Or would you just rent a Shimano setup from them?

Thanks.

No white rods allowed.... lol if you are not sure then rent your first year, its cheap enough and there is no shame in it.

Paul& phil if we get enough peeps you think they would make it a 3 day? Just tossing it out there sounds like we have 1/3 rd the boat already.

Matt,

I go on these trips at least once a year (usually three trips a year between the Helen H and the Frances Fleet).

I'm not sure if the Newell would stand up to a decent sized yellowfin. There are also a few swordfish caught on these trips...

If I'm on the trip you're more than welcome to use some of my gear (I tend to bring everything I own, WAY more than I need).

Generally I think someone going on this trip should bring:

1 30 lb outfit for chunking
1 15-20 lb spinning outfit for casting to mahi and catching bait
1 jigging outfit

I'm sure there are many other options but that's where I started.

Hope to see you there.

Charlie

Look at their published schedule, every day is booked so they would have to convert 3 2 day trips into 2 3 day trips to stay every day, not likely in my opinion.

ThrowingTimber 03-30-2012 10:57 AM

In and booked! Also big joe still is in and booking, FID is also in and booking.

hey matt - your stella 10000 will work for most fish out there. i was using a calcutta 700 for jigging on a light duty cod rod, at one point i was napping and heard a fish come over the rail - i jumped up and hooked 8 fish on jigs in a row. lost half of them. alot of these fish are in the 25-65 pound range. if you hook a bigger one well at least you'll have a good story. and get some metered braid for jigging

Paul you think it might be best to start a new thread, or just have those people post im in and if they have +1 ot +2 like the cod trip?

Matt D 04-09-2012 11:25 AM

Quick question for anyone who jigs for these fish at all with spinning gear. Would you rather have a 5'6" 520gm or a 6'6" 325gm rod? Some things I've read seem to think the extra length is beneficial fishing on a party boat sized vessel to easier clear the rails? Are shorter (6' and less) jigging rods the norm on these trips?

niko 04-09-2012 04:46 PM

the longer rod for the partyboat. vs makes a pretty good 325g one for an ok price. will double as a good bluefin jigging/casting rod if you put a bigger reel on it

Padawan 04-09-2012 05:55 PM

ill make sure i bring the porgy slayer setup

vineyardblues 04-10-2012 08:48 AM

BOOKED :)

niko 04-10-2012 09:24 AM

along with the boats cash pool lets do a plug pool for us. last years winner got a kilsong GT popper. this year i'll add in a polaris popper turned by eelu and painted by ryan smith. vb :kewl:

Thanks niko.

*BOOKED*

The thought of the 3 hour drive before and especially after 36 hours on the boat didn't sound too great. Booked Fri - Wed in a campground on the Ditch as well.

iamskippy 04-14-2012 08:47 AM

i may have +2 with me i will know by then end of the weekend, and then Paul if its ok with you i will start a new thread with who's in. this is turning into a S-B trip get the pirate flag out we are taking over the boat!

niko 04-14-2012 09:02 AM
