I use a spot messenger-beacon all the time. I can text my wife with it to tell her my status/location and it shows her where I am on a chart too. haven't needed to use emergency button yet though...

The problem I have is that if your taking hits by waves the pfd will need to be rinsed like most of your gear. This will entail undoing the velcro, removing and rinsing the bladder. From a technical POV, the Standard Horizon HX851 Floating VHF/GPS, strobe, and distress calling looks like the best value.
