Woohoo 4 inches but cold as a bastard at 0.

Raven 01-03-2014 04:14 AM

i remember going to school
and for the first couple of hours
my pant legs were stiff and frozen
from my knees on down....

spinncognito 01-03-2014 07:24 AM

Measured 16" on my picnic table this morning here in Glosta. A balmy 12 degrees with the wind whipping but I would say only half as bad as last years blizzard. Cold temps make this powder ulta-light and easy to move.

I love this weather..even though I have to work out side in it and have done so all my life... it took me 10 minutes to get to work... normal commute ( with idots on the road) takes 20... 45 if it's snowing or raining...no idiots on the road and my only delay is a few traffic lights..I'll never figure out why people buy out all the bread and milk the store will let them.. get a months supply of canned goods.. have expensive generators in case they loose power.. buy the biggest snow blower money can buy and the lattest and greatest ice melter .. yet drive around on inadequate tires..on cars that belong in the carribean...I'll save the SUV's that don't clean the snow off their vehicles for another rant... 3 months until groundfishing opens:uhuh:

Sea Dangles 01-03-2014 08:48 AM

I hear you Joe. We usually make sure we are out of the essentials. Certainly no need for 4wd vehicle and if I had no power I would rub 2 sticks together and eschew the generator and just keep my fingers crossed the pipes don't freeze. Why use a snowblower when I could shovel and strengthen my back? And ice melt,? Silly people,it will melt on its own so why waste the money trying to prevent a slip and fall when all you have to do is take a trip to the E room.
I can't wait to get older and smarter.

ya missed the whole point I trying ( poorly I guess) to convey... quickly said... they prep WELL for the storm but when it comes to driving/cars, they tottaly ignore what's important... A DECENT PAIR OF TIRES...and common sense.

Saltheart 01-03-2014 01:21 PM

Turned out to be a nothing snow storm at my house. 8 at the most. Now , one more night of deep freeze and hopefully back to normal.

Well, my 16 year old wasn't lacking good tires yesterday but the common sense part was ignored and the result was predictable. Perhaps the hit on the bank account and no wheels for a while will help cure what ails him...
Harumph!!!

I'm beat... Close to the jackpot. We got better than 20". No major tidal damagethough. Here is a Bruce Durkee shot of why they close our causeway....

nightfighter 01-04-2014 07:53 AM

Yes.

With zero degrees on the thermometer, a friend of mine headed out to go surfing at 8 am... in a 6mm suit.

I get the chills in the fall wearing a 5mm !

Not sure what you call snow, 25-35 mph winds, with white-out conditions these days. I still call it a "blizzard". :D

Glad he is OK.

I had a bad experience last night. Didn't want to be out driving with the icy conditions but I have AWD on my brand CR-V and didn't want my GF to drive to and from work in her Mazda sedan. So on my way to pick her up I'm going SLOWLY through an intersection when a sedan blasted through the red light on their side and destroyed the front end of my car. The woman said she slid on the ice, but I saw her coming in fast as I was trying to veer away. Thank God no one was hurt, no pedestrians in the road. Thank God no one was in my driver seat. I was friggin' livid. The woman was clearly driving fast in the snow. Thank God I have full coverage :wall:

Great point Larry. Now that was a STORM!!! We had 52" of snow and 14' drifts. Town used a road grader with a 12' V-plow to open my road after 6 days. Guy down the road had a snow machine and made runs to town for everyone to get beer, cigs (we all smoked back then) and eggs. We finally got out after a week.

I was in Providence at 4:30 in the afternoon the day the storm started. I was working for IBM and assigned to Spiedel. Had a Ford F250 4WD and actually made it home but it took 7 hours to go 30 miles. The highways were clogged with stuck vehicles but I got in back of a plow who went up the MEDIAN STRIP on 95N. Got to 295 and headed up the off ramp as the on ramp was full of stuck cars.

Wild memories!!

Raven 01-05-2014 08:09 PM

that's what i "thought" we were getting TDF
but it never happened... 4"-10" drifts
it was rediculously cold however, like a cold sand paper
the dog would stick it's head out the door
and yank it back as if to say "NO F-ING way dude

Raider Ronnie 01-05-2014 08:33 PM

8 inches of snow
26 hrs for the plow trucks on with the state.
I'll take it.

that's just in experience... at 16 he ( or she) hasn't seen enough of this to become experienced.. that's not a crime...at 16 they haven't developed common sense... I'm sure you'll giude him through ( even if it takes tough love)...

Jackbass 01-06-2014 12:58 PM

You know in my day I pulled the bus through 12" of snow loaded with kids and the teachers. It was -40 and then I pulled it home too. Lol

Blizzard of 78 I worked until late morning then headed home. I lived in Worcester at the time and was driving a Datsun B210. I was 25 years old , about 210 pounds , and very strong to say the least. On my way home in the snow I got stuck several times. I simply got out of the car , lifted up the rear end out of the ruts and then continued on my way. No exaggeration , I was strong as an ox in those days.
After the storm the roads in Worcester were pretty well plowed but other areas were paralyzed. My girlfriend was in Milford and as young love is a powerful force I hopped in my car to go get her. The driving ban was on and the fine was $1000. I drovee up 290 in Worcester and ran into a sudden wall of snow blocking the road. I got off and followed Rt 20 a while and got back on again. Made it to 495 somewhere in Northboro and headed south east to Milford. On the way I ran into 3 snow plows coming down 495 in the wrong direction! They were 3 abreast and heading right at me. I pulled way over and stopped and as they went by I was plowed in. I shoveled myself out and kept going. When I got to Milford the exit was blocked but some front end loaders were working on it so I sat and waited until the exit ramp was opened. I had my choice of two ways to get from there to her house and made up my mind to take the main road which was sure to be plowed. Well on the way I spaced out and simply went the way I always went , which was back roads. I got there no problem but found out that the National Guard was on the main road I hadn't taken and was giving out the $1000 tickets to anyone they caught out driving!

We went back to Worcester like there was no problem at all. Still have no idea why the highways to Milford were blocked but from Milford to Worcester were wide open.

My girlfriend made sure I was well rewarded for my heroic efforts to rescue her and about two weeks later she sent me a Valentines card showing Mighty Mouse flying away with his girlfriend in his arms rescuing the damsel in distress! :)
