In my quest for infinite knowledge, I had to google Hakarle.. Wow.
Chef Anthony Bourdain described hákarl as "the single worst, most disgusting and terrible tasting thing" he has ever eaten.[1] Chef Gordon Ramsay challenged James May to sample three "delicacies" (Laotian snake whiskey, bull penis, and hákarl) on The F Word; after eating hákarl, Ramsay spat it out, although May kept his down. May's only reaction was, "You disappoint me, Ramsay."[5] On season 2's Iceland episode of Travel Channel's Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern, Andrew Zimmern described the smell as reminding him of "some of the most horrific things I've ever breathed in my life," but said the taste was not nearly as bad as the smell. Nonetheless, he did note that hákarl was "hardcore food" and "not for beginners". On the season 5 finale of River Monsters, Jeremy Wade tries a dried piece of hákarl and describes it as "burning the back of his throat" and having a very strong after taste. I am seriously looking to make a run down there this week.
|
Beware Newport! But I 'll be down for jerky.

I know you don't like what I have to say Westportmafia but you really might want to pay attention to what's happening with the tolls. The brandy-new toll structure that got passed last night isn't really going to help you much.In the history of this state you could not have picked a worst time to possibly start a business on Aquidneck Island.
I wish you the best of luck. But a business based on beef-jerkey in Newport?Really? |
Beef jerky?

Good luck Jay! I'll make it down there and support your small business.

The business has a good chance at success. It's unique in the area, provides instant gratification and has a variable price point that affords a tickle or indulgence. It's also a food item without a lot of spoilage. A small % of revenues are going to come from people driving to Newport just to get jerky so tolls aren't going to matter that much. That being said, what was just passed? The key challenge I see is pulling people off the street. Another avenue to explore is how to create return customers via mail order as a follow on to in store sales. But seriously, who doesn't like good jerky? -spence |
Well said, Spence. Basswipe must think the tourists are going to stay away from Newport now. A toll isn't going to affect tourism, and the locals are already on the island. Not to mention that it's exotic jerky, not beef jerky as he's claiming. It's not the convenience store slim jim stuff.

When I go to Newport I complain more about the parking than the tolls.

In the 10 days we have been open we have had people from all over the states and out of the country as far as Germany and Thailand. It's a unique specialty shop. Our average sale is around 50 bucks. We have had dozens of people posing for pictures in front of our store. I haven't seen any other stores with people taking pics in front of them. Beef jerky? Not even close. We had the most popular booth at the expo last night for local businesses at the Hyatt. Basswipe come to the shop and see what we are doing. As I did special order you some wood smoked peppered venison. The meat is over an inch thick!
