Have you had it? We had a couple in the shop over the weekend that were from Iceland. They said that they pretty much do it as a tourist joke. None of the new age people eat it. But their grand and great grandfathers ate it. I was told they sell it to tourists and laugh their azzes of after they leave. They bury it under the ground for months. I guess they make some good money on it but it's not a common thing to eat according to the cats that told us about it.

In my quest for infinite knowledge, I had to google Hakarle.. Wow.

Chef Anthony Bourdain described hákarl as "the single worst, most disgusting and terrible tasting thing" he has ever eaten.[1]

Chef Gordon Ramsay challenged James May to sample three "delicacies" (Laotian snake whiskey, bull penis, and hákarl) on The F Word; after eating hákarl, Ramsay spat it out, although May kept his down. May's only reaction was, "You disappoint me, Ramsay."[5]

On season 2's Iceland episode of Travel Channel's Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern, Andrew Zimmern described the smell as reminding him of "some of the most horrific things I've ever breathed in my life," but said the taste was not nearly as bad as the smell. Nonetheless, he did note that hákarl was "hardcore food" and "not for beginners".

On the season 5 finale of River Monsters, Jeremy Wade tries a dried piece of hákarl and describes it as "burning the back of his throat" and having a very strong after taste.

We did great stayed open all night and drank beers. Had some cool people from town hanging out. Had 2 kids try to trade drugs for jerky. Had another kid that wanted to trade me weed for my beer as I was walking back from the liquor store. Had 1 Hott drunk beootch wobble into the store and sat on an alligator head in my picture window and almost went through the glass. People on roofs, hanging out of windows, people drunk falling down at 1130 in the afternoon! And it seems like dress code was yoga pants and no bras! My kind of Saturday night. I'll post some pics up this week.

Beware Newport! But I 'll be down for jerky.

I know you don't like what I have to say Westportmafia but you really might want to pay attention to what's happening with the tolls. The brandy-new toll structure that got passed last night isn't really going to help you much.In the history of this state you could not have picked a worst time to possibly start a business on Aquidneck Island.

I wish you the best of luck. But a business based on beef-jerkey in Newport?Really?

fishbones 03-19-2014 03:42 PM

Beef jerky?

I think he passed that point when the window decals went up.

The business has a good chance at success. It's unique in the area, provides instant gratification and has a variable price point that affords a tickle or indulgence.

It's also a food item without a lot of spoilage.

A small % of revenues are going to come from people driving to Newport just to get jerky so tolls aren't going to matter that much. That being said, what was just passed?

The key challenge I see is pulling people off the street. Another avenue to explore is how to create return customers via mail order as a follow on to in store sales.

But seriously, who doesn't like good jerky?

-spence

fishbones 03-19-2014 06:05 PM

Well said, Spence. Basswipe must think the tourists are going to stay away from Newport now. A toll isn't going to affect tourism, and the locals are already on the island. Not to mention that it's exotic jerky, not beef jerky as he's claiming. It's not the convenience store slim jim stuff.

PaulS 03-19-2014 06:33 PM

When I go to Newport I complain more about the parking than the tolls.

WESTPORTMAFIA 03-19-2014 07:12 PM

In the 10 days we have been open we have had people from all over the states and out of the country as far as Germany and Thailand. It's a unique specialty shop. Our average sale is around 50 bucks. We have had dozens of people posing for pictures in front of our store. I haven't seen any other stores with people taking pics in front of them. Beef jerky? Not even close. We had the most popular booth at the expo last night for local businesses at the Hyatt. Basswipe come to the shop and see what we are doing. As I did special order you some wood smoked peppered venison. The meat is over an inch thick!

That's an important metric to track...big business spends a lot of money looking at how to upsell even just a few percent.

Hey, I see NJC made the front page of the Newport Daily News. Congrats! Looks like you guys had a good day at the business expo.

Research was done before we made the move. And that's pretty much what was expected and falls in line. We aren't building rocket ships. Numbers are numbers. And when the hell can I expect to see you? I need to know a week in advanced as I have low ceilings.
