I have had smoked albie and it was delicious, right along side smoked bonito and bluefish all at the same sitting. Just saying.

That said, fishermen are slaying albies all over the vineyard.

Saw quite a few while standing on shore (cape side vineyard sound) yesterday. Not within casting distance, though. Always cool to see those little torpedoes breaching.

Guppy 09-01-2014 03:40 PM

Wednesday looks like a good one to go chasing them guys. Bought a Tica last year for this,,, broke it in half last week :smash:, left it in the t top got home with half a rod and empty spool,, if you go down 6a in Barnstable keep your head down LOL. :devil2:

ProfessorM 09-01-2014 04:15 PM

Thursday will be even better NW 5. Flat calm on south side and I can't go.

Thursdays out, getting kidnaped, Moheegan Sun is in, need points :uhuh:

Rmarsh 09-01-2014 04:54 PM

Teaching my wife to drive the boat paid off. I was standing in the bow when I saw the breaking fish...yelled to her to get me over there...chased them for a little while and started hooking up. She mentioned that I got a little over excited and was yelling at her...and waving hand signals where I wanted to go. I will give her credit though... she put me in perfect position to get at them

Got after 'em today and had a blast. Wind was perfect for drifting with the bait schools. It was just a matter of patience. The madness begins!

Them little bastages drink a LOT of gas!!!!!!!!
Tough to be patient when your on one school that goes down....and you spot a second school bustin bait....then a third, :smash:
They get you circling halfarssed backwards....
Gotta Luv it

bassballer 09-02-2014 08:56 AM

i got an ear full from the wifey on the gas bill. shes not happy. I told her ill save a ton on gas when its Toggin season. But for now, sorry.

ProfessorM 09-02-2014 09:15 AM

I got an ear full this weekend too and I have not even started fishing for them yet. Must have been a group effort.

Ghost fish

Had a good shot at them over the weekend. They were in close for about 10 minutes. Def within casting range, but it was not to be. I also bought a Tica last year to target these fish. You think they are frustrating from a boat, try them from shore. :fury: I had a shot though. Did not seem to want my green metal. They were on peanuts and a variety of bait. I'm probably wasting my time, but what the hell.

ProfessorM 09-02-2014 11:21 AM

Honestly I think a boat is even more frustrating as you feel like you should be getting one but from shore I usually know it is going to be a one in million shot so I have lower expectations. Racing back and forth and all over creation for hours on end to have them go under as soon as you cast is pretty darn challenging but on a few days it is easy as pie. Guess that is what keeps you going back for more.

That's great Casey! Was it albies or bonito?....we had to chase them down....wife was at the helm....said I went a little crazy...pointing in all different directions...barking orders...waving hand signals..almost went over the bow when she throttled down after I told her not to run them over.

Lol yeah at home she's the boss....but cant have that on the boat. That is my domain. She is having a little trouble getting use to it, but has been a good sport about it.

At least you hooked up 3X's, you were going to release them anyways so no big deal losing at the boat unless you wanted a picture!

:nopics:

BatesBCheatin 09-03-2014 03:42 PM

Checked out 1/2 dozen spots today from my truck. Couldn't find any remotely close enough to cast to. Birds seem to have taken the day off as well. Pretty dead for the first time in days. Doesn't seem like there are too many blues around to fill in the time waiting for these things to show, either.

#^&#^&#^&#^&ing Fish

Well now I know where they all went. Had plenty of shots, but still have yet to land one. Had one follow my metal right up to the rock I was on. I've been stubborn when it comes to light leader and tying direct. That all changes tomorrow. We will see if it makes a difference. The bug has hit in a big way.

Hope so. This is basically the 2nd year I've targeted them and the first year seriously. I have been using 30lb Suffix with 30lb flouro. Like I said I was stubborn, but after being unsuccessful the last week and with all the fish around, I admit I'm doing something wrong. Tomorrow four feet of 12lb flouro and no extra hardware. Uni to uni. With the water so clear and the sun high it 'should' help. We will see. Just need the fish to show up and test it out.

In line with some of what you're saying.......there is TONS of bait out there. Not many predators however....seen plenty of schools of juvey blues.....where are the bigguns? Where are the Bass?...Bait will be gone before the leaves fall.

BatesBCheatin 09-04-2014 09:09 PM

From shore...

It's been a long time since I've seen so much bait. Most of it seems to be very small. Peanuts, bay anchovies, and some smaller bait I can't ID. I've also seen the little harbor blues with not much else on the bait except the funny fish lately and some smallish bass.
Other areas there are lots of butterfish, macs, and juvi herring. Bass seem to be concentrated in confined areas and not spread out as many have been saying all year long.
Right now I'm only concentrating on these tunoids, but something is definitely 'off' and has been for quite some time when it comes to bass and blues.
Certain areas that I've fished ALWAYS held blues at dawn and dusk, but this year they just aren't there and weren't last year either even with mega bait around.

Spanish macs as well

Is Falmouth or the Vineyard the best bet for this weekend? I usually fish out of Westport, but would like a shot at the little tuna's, although I get enough frustration at work; don't know why I do it to myself on the weekend too:(. Last year outside Quicks was so frustrating, on them all morning without a sniff and I cycled through all the usual goodies, maybe this year I'll get lucky.

NICE ,those fish drove me nuts yesterday. Jim had at least 4 to the boat by the time I caught my first fish, but it was a seabass :smash:, figures.
I did land 4 albies and my very first ever spainish mac, also caught a monster scup so I got a Cape Cod Grand Slam of sorts off of mr. striper's boat.

bassballer 09-05-2014 10:34 AM

nice! the fish i was on seemed to have dissapeared after a week. Gotta go hunting again.

BatesBCheatin 09-06-2014 10:54 AM

Had only a 5 minute shot at them yesterday, if that. They seem to have disbursed for the time being. Going to kill me not to hunt them down today, but have less important things I have to do.

Did not see the boat guys doing much at all yesterday, but they were much further out than previous days.

ProfessorM 09-06-2014 11:34 AM

Hoping for a window tomorrow morning early out of Osterville if the wind allows me.

Any recent intel anyone wants to pass along, public or PM? Going tomorrow out of Fairhaven so I can cover Buzz Bay, Vineyard Sound, Woods Hole, Falmouth, Westport to Newport. Taking Fishbucket/son and don't think either has caught them (at all? or recently)
