thoughts and prayers. losing a close family member is never easy.

I remember when I lost my dad 6 yrs ago. I went to visit every day and just talked with him about all the good times and funny things that happened(he was a perpetual joker). Shortly before he passed he thanked me for helping make the days just a little bit shorter and less stressful.

For supper he wanted a hamburger with sautéed onions and peppers, he didn't eat much but he enjoyed what he ate I had asked him if wanted some water he looked at me and said no how about a bud light.
So we shared a beer together.

numbskull 05-03-2015 07:28 AM

Your father will live on in you and your children. He knows that at some level and the meaning it gives him will carry him through his final days. It is the most any of us can ask for when we look back at our lives.

JohnR 05-03-2015 07:35 AM

Be strong, Bob, for you, your wife, and all of your family. Godspeed, bud!

This is always a tough and it is hard way to pass the torch.

When I am out fishing alone deep in the night I say hello to my dad, and many of those that have gone before us. Almost a ritual.

1dozenraw 05-03-2015 07:50 AM

Keep the faith and stay in the moment. My thoughts are with your Dad for sure.

eelskimmer 05-03-2015 03:09 PM

Bob,
When me meet again at TFCTFN we shall both raise a
glass to the memories of our fathers. You and I were
lucky, many are not so. God bless us all.

nightfighter 05-03-2015 03:31 PM

Hey, Bob. So sorry. There ain't any instruction manual for this... People grieve differently, so I have never found fault with how folks manage their grief.
That said, I can only offer what helped me when my father passed. All eyes turned to me as I assumed a new, unwanted role as head of family. Keep your wife close, and communicate what you feel and need from her. Be sure to get some time ALONE. Pray, reflect, meditate, whatever you need to get yourself together. Issues and people are going to be coming at your family in many states of their own grief. Some issues will be unexpected. Some behaviors of mourners can be unhealthy to your family. Recognizing and diplomatically handling the unexpected is your new role in protecting the family. Delegate what you can. Have the younger kids keep everyone hydrated, especially if you are having a wake. Taking care of your mom and the rest of the clan begins with making sure you are good to go.... I'm just a phone call away.
