I take my 17' to cuttyhunk several times a season.....my expenses for the boat are practically nill. Like 7 bucks to park at the ramp and 8 gal. of gasLanded many fish with wife and kids. Bought a kit and built it with my son...about 10 grand total into it.....and the learning experience with my adult son was gratifying beyond words.
No interest in building....that's ok it's not for everybody but there are many success stories out there....and it makes the boating experience extra special. And as I mentioned...not a lot of money.
Will it last forever...no. But it will outlast me and probably my son if he takes care of it.

Very, very cool! I'm probably not that handy where I'd let anyone set foot on a boat that I'd build.

Clammer 03-21-2023 09:40 AM

all this planning is GREAT

I'm mostly suggesting this because you have a son or sons.
With the precut kit it's nothing you couldn't handle....you probably built models when you were a kid?
Its the same only larger...and more forgiving. The kit supplier has tutorials and forum members are a great help.
Your kids might really enjoy the experience. It's a confidence booster when they see what you can be accomplished with some thought and effort. You will also know more about your boat than most production boat owners
I'll just leave it at that.
Good luck...

Who did you get the kit from?

No need to leave it at that, feel free to suggest more!

Thanks Jim...I bought their plans for a 14 footer but didn't build it once I realized it wasn't what I really wanted. My 17 is perfect for two ....more if necessary. ....their 19 is wider heavier but again bigger motor. These designs are simple hulls to construct....you can keep them plain or go all out.
There are more sophisticated boat plans from other designers like the Marrisa 18 by B&B Yacth designs for one. Lot more boat but a lot more money...and time commitment.....bigger motor etc.
Check them out even if just for the design study. And...trailering and launching a 17 is really easy!

You serious? Guy asks a perfectly good question and gets cussed out.
No further comments from me on this one.

If you are referring to Clammers response then you don't know Mike. That's the way he has responded for over 20 years. I'm sure, knowing Mike as well as I do, he meant no harm or malice toward Jim.

This site has always had ballbusters and, in the 20 years I've been here none of it has been taken seriously.

thanks. but you can comment to me all you want.

I don’t know clammer but he does have his own style that was on display. I have asked quite a few questions here about specific boat brands as i do research, as i do plan to buy a boat in a few years, and clammer has usually responded to those with well intentioned suggestions. it wouldnt surprise me if anyone concluded i’m an annoying tire kicker in regards to buying a boat, that doesn’t bother me as the reasons why i’m waiting are reasons that are important to me.

I’m guessing piemma is right, that it was good natured ribbing and not intended as an attack, but even if it was, it’s no big deal as its not a character flaw that i’m putting my kids first. Takes a lot more than that to hurt my feelings. And again, i don’t think that was his intent

intent can be very easy to misinterpret online. Either way, it’s all good.

Bring up the fact that bluefish have entered Clammer’s fishing grounds and sit back…. Listen to Clammer’s special words about the subject

It wasn’t a joke, Mike was just dropping some tough love.

Humpty Dumpty probably had to pay good $$$ to the 7 to get some.

I have to take my 18.5' there this year with the right weather.

Jim- I think you can find a decent 20ish CC for around 25k. About 2 yrs of boat club and it's yours and it will still retain value. Couldn't live with the idea of being told when I could go and when I had to be back.

That's the best advice yet.
AH....pick a nice day in June and maybe I could tag along....have you been through canipisit channel? The back side of the Elizabeth's are a beautiful sight.

piemma 03-24-2023 08:33 AM

Prices are crazy now. 8 years ago I sold a 20' Sea Hunt, Yami 115 4 Stroke. T Top and every electronic and bell and whistle with the trailer for $10K. Now it's $25K used.

Not in one of my boats, went thru with Russ Wright of Lisa G. charters - hairy. I like plugging about 100 yds offshore and casting towards shore. And Nashawena - omg!

Let's do it!
