I never keep or weigh blues so I'm not sure, but if I catch a real big one I'll often measure length just for fun. I've caught many in the 36-38 inch range and fat. So maybe 17-18 pounds or so might be the biggest?
All from shore.....those alligator sized ones fight like crazy. |

Had fun gettin that one in...it dogged like crazy |
38" 18 Pounds 2 years ago on one of my poppers... I thought sure it was 35 pound bass... would've weighed more but it spit up 2 coffee cup sized balls of bunker.
My friend caught one a few years before on a deadly #^^^^& that measured 46" he released it... had to be close to that 28 pound record if not way over... what a horse! |
17 lbs, from the beach in R.I. on fresh peanut bunker 5 or 6 years ago in Sept. is my best.
|
14 lbs.
It was also my first bluefish (that I remeber) Bout 15 years ago.. WAY inside the taunton river - like past the Berkelely Bridge. .. You could of walked across the pogies in there that year. |
off Ptown, 5 years ago - on squid - 17 lbs. 3 huge leaps out of the water, down deep and then came at the boat - :scream:
|
one night last year- walked 30 minutes to a spot and took 3 casts with a darter into the rrrrrip- first cast had all hooks straightened- I figured it was a horse bass over 40 lbs. 2nd cast after bending my hools back- 14.5 lbs on the boga- next cast 15.5 lbs.. after that i screwed outta there.. to me, gator bloos are a nice fight, but its not what i am after.

17# on a wonderbread windcheater.
|
Wonderbread wincheater from Indiana?
|
consecutive casts from the beach one night two years ago, both fish were 40" and I figured over eighteen lbs. They fought so hard I still thought the second one was a bass over 40

Good job Larry.
Back in the day when the harbor was loaded with pogies, we used to chunk them up one after another,, not over 20lbs, but pretty close. Didn't matter too much cause we lost count after like 30 each. We wouldnt leave til we ran out of bait. |
I'm not sure what was my biggest weight, but I recall getting about $1.50 a pound a few times !!!
My son Leo got one last year a bit over 12lbs @ 7 years old  |

Also had a night in Quicks about 6-7 years ago that was all 15+lb Bluefish piled up on the ledge for a solid 2 hours.
Couldn't get chunks in the water fast enough, eventually gave up after being so tired you couldn't lift a rod. East end blitzes in the early 90's :hihi: |
This weekend last year we had fished bass all nite in "Truro." Took a quick ride over to Corn Hill mid morning. The beach was littered with all sorts of bait carnage....heads...tails....full bodies. No sign of surface activity. First cast with a popper and it was inhaled the second it hit the water. There were schools of alligator blues chasing peanuts up and down the beach. At one point in the tide we had bait clinging to our wader and blues crashing around us. Took what had to be a 20lber on a 3 oz pink surface tension. We had been into fish around 15 lbs for an hour or two, I'll never forget my brothers face when he saw the fish I hauled onto the beach. It was a freakin' slob. :humpty:
|
I saw Larry's trophy monster Blue in Cutty--WOW, fat like a basketball. My biggest was a 19.5 pounder I caught using a 3 oz pencil on Island Beach State Park last spring. I just stood there on the beach staring at it in disbelief. Some of my friends thought I was crazy so we went back the following day and I got a 19.0 on the first cast of the morning. The guy next to me got an 18.5 pounder and it was his first day surf fishing ever.
Hey Larry, Thanks for the plug, you and Don are great guys, we'll have to hook up sometime in the future. -Scott |
