thats too bad its junk. Diesels are pricey. can you get one out of a junkyard and put it in a boat?

thefishingfreak 10-24-2006 11:37 AM

i watched a running 420 hp tamd volvo go for 800 bucks on ebay last week :wall: right down the street in r.i. too
that would do me nice.. they put twins in these things so a 420 volvo weight wouldn't matter. i bet the flybrige i'm leaving off weighs as much as the difference..
thats the plan now watch ebay for cheap 350-400 hp. diesels. the fuel saving in one year alone will cover the cost.

they didn't winterize this thing right, water was left in the exaust manifolds and it creaped into the head. down the pistons and in into the oil pan :poke:

deisel it is :humpty: :boots:

Little Round 10-24-2006 12:00 PM

If you look in the right places you can find one that is coming out of a boat about to be repowered, or has been overhauled. I know 2 years ago Mass Martime had a couple running diesels that went to there aution for short money. If you look around you will find stuff pretty cheap.

Ehhhh.... the Volvo Pentas aren't that bad, but parts when you need them hurt the wallet something fierce.

Nice Mike. I need to score some free rod holders for my brother's boats...knucklehead doesn't have a one between the TWO!!!!

Would love to see a sketch or drawing of your plans. Use good stuff for cleating up cockpit decking and cabin sole, but do not spend much on the materials that will be serving as those floorboards. That's because they will be trashed after the build and you will want to fit in new after the big jobs, especially power plant install. It is definitely something to plan out as you build the bulkheads with the B grade stock, as I assume you wil be glassing those in.

Make any sense to pull trim tabs during build? I know I would be hitting those in the shed more than once!

MTC 11-08-2006 12:57 PM

I could get you a good price on a new Mercurser...

PM me...

I also have a 8 foot bench seat out of a 27' Tiara/Prusuit (spelling) you could have...

thefishingfreak 11-18-2006 11:03 PM

started mocking up some stuff.
gunna add some flair to the bow and raise the cabin up a little bit in the process.
i wanted to give the flair a good 3" extra beam amidship ala buddy davis, but there's one major problem with that.. it won't fit out of the garage door after :wall: as it is now i have to grease up the gunnels to get it in. also i won't be able to complete the wheelhouse/hardtop inside as it will be too tall.:read:

Mike you sure move fast! Flair looks great. Can you gain any space by cocking it to the side? If not you could get one of the portable garages and set it up sort of attached to the side of the shop??

thefishingfreak 11-18-2006 11:57 PM

i have about an inch on either side to get it in and out.
i'll do what i can inside over the winter, then look into a portable shed.

taJon 11-19-2006 08:33 AM

Thats what I was going to suggest. get it mocked up and build it outside. I love that carolina flare

? about the trailer. R U concerned with the tongue weight of the trailer with the stern so far off it?

stiff tip 11-19-2006 09:10 AM

ura animal.. cant wait 2 c it complete...c.c.c.

beamie 11-19-2006 11:02 AM

Mike,

How are you going to fill that in....2 layers of 1/4" ply? Boulter has nice long sheets as you probably know. Theat will be a funny shape when layed on a flat board with lots of wastage from the sheet. I suppose you could strip it with plywood in directions too with less waste.

thefishingfreak 11-19-2006 02:40 PM

i'm going to strip it with okoume plywood.

Sgt_Nutz 11-19-2006 05:07 PM

Curious, are you using the pressure treated as a jig only or is it going to be permanent?
Know what you mean about the space, I started building a layout boat in my basement once. Had to stop half way through when I realized I wouldnt be able to get it out the bulkhead!:smash:

Christian 11-19-2006 07:01 PM

so awsome! you are a handyman-and-a-half.

thefishingfreak 11-19-2006 11:06 PM

as far as the trailer, it's only to move it arround the yard.
the pressure treated is permanent.
basicly planning as i go.

Not sure I would use PT wood if you plan to glass any part of it, the oils and what not will not allow a good bond, just what I have been told. Looks good though you definately have imagination and draw pretty good too.

thefishingfreak 11-21-2006 05:18 PM

yeah, i tried all kinds of different glue/resin on it. nothing will stick to it. i'll have to switch to something else..

looky what i found right down the street.
2,400 hrs, dirt cheap. just gotta figure out what horsepower it's rated for?
