Excuse me kind sir, please do not immediately get upset or assume I am here to highjack your spot, tangle your line, spy on what you are doing then run home and post our, i mean your success all over the internet as if it was my information; I have been fishing this spot since my father taught me and intended to fish here all by myself but alas you are here before me so I felt I should at least make the appropriate greeting so that you are not offended in any way shape or form as that is surely not my intention. I will pass by you and find a spot out of your way where there is absolutely zero possibility of my bothering you anymore than I probably already have. Oh yeah, before I forget kind sir, any luck?????
|
That was downright rude. I would rather be acknowledged and lied to, then completely ignored.
|
Yeah I hate that question "Any luck" cause if there's not a fish at my feet then the answer is "no" but I am willing to make friends with anyone who's addicted enough to be standing out on some slimey rocks in the middle of the night. Just the fact that we're both out there is something in common.

seeing a newbie....
with a boat....the other day...
(perfect stranger) i asked him a question and he answered with body language indicating that he wanted little conversation.... :rude:....not only did i tell the guy where to fish.... and at what depth... i gave him the precise lure to catch them on.... at my spot did he believe me....? i dunno....:lasso: ( years from now, i'll see him again tho)............. he now has the ball.... will he go there... probably... or maybe... a couple of buddies joined him right after wards... i did the right thing...in my minds eye to appease the fishing gods. as it was a very beautiful day:read: |

Man, flyvice, you need to take a few deep breaths, get off the steroids, and cut down on your raw meat. And maybe go lay on a couch in some shrink's office for a session or two...I thought the point of getting out there was to relax.
I'm a weekend warrior who enjoys fishing when I can get out there, which means when I'm not at work, not doing something on the house, not playing with the little guy or the dog. Which means I get out there 15 times a year, give or take, for the last 15 years. I bet I have greeted 99% of the fisherman I come across by saying "any luck"? As others have said, it's the fishing equivalent of "how's it goin?" It never, ever occurred to me that I'd trigger a paranoid response from the lunatic I had the misfortune to come across. When I'm fortunate enough to get out there, particularly when I'm having any success whatsoever, my blood pressure is so low you wouldn't be able to measure it. If you're that tightly wound in what should be a relaxing situation, how do you cope with real-life stressful situations? |

1. There are no "secret" spots. Why would you think you are the first human to fish from that spot? 2. As soon as you think you know what you are doing you have taken all the spirit out of the game. I've put back more 40s in a night than most of you will catch in a lifetime. Because I'm good? No way! I was in the right place, at the right time and God smiled upon me. 40 years in the surf and 3 in the boat and everytime I fish I find out that I don't know *^&%#% |

Fisherman should be like brothers that all take part in one of the most enjoyable and relaxing past times that is on this earth. "Can't we all just get along?" |
To all the posters who see this as a very negative post, see my post stating that I believe there are only 3 types of answers to the question "Any luck?" when i am into fish and someone shows up late. Some form of "Yes", some form of "No", or silence.
Then you need to understand that the spot I was fishing is a very small spot. A very small piece of structure in a small location. I don't need to feed information to someone so he can come back and "share" the spot with me. Of course it is not "my" spot, it's a public place. I would just rather not have someone I do not know crowding me. The reason I was angry is that the guy wanted to know if there are fish there. In the original post, I was pretty clear that I put in my due diligence, being there after working late and with little sleep. Why should he be entitled to find out what is going on without his putting in the time? Why do I need to have to lie to the guy? I would rather not answer than have to lie to someone. As another member pointed out, had I shared info with this guy, it may have been reciprocated, but that may not be the case. If I am missing out on a bite somewhere else, it's either I am not doing my homework, or it is just my loss as I can't be everywhere at once. There is certain information that can be shared and locations discussed, this just didn't happen to be it. |
flypapervice... lets face it u did yourself....never post what u think unless u plan to get youself shi t on by the shi t tossers....who cares what u think???? i dont and i,m the only one cares ...laugh it up .some night u my need someone to talk to.....

where you lost me... is in the selfish over tone of this post. i understand the frustration of being out all night and then it seems like someone wants an easy path to the fish. but at the same time, is catching a few fish really more important treating a fellow fishermen (person at the least) with some respect? if you were having a rough night and just wanted to be left alone fine. everyone has nights like that. but for the reasoning to be "i was there longer and studied the area harder, so those are my fish" (which you can vehemently deny, but thats pretty much what you said about the night in question) is just re-donk-u-lous. in the 20 years i have fishing (mostly fresh mind you) i think there is one spot i picked out all my own with no prior knowledge. and i was 5 years old at the time. since then every single spot i have found has been the result of some one else's knowledge. whether i got it from reading a book or listening at bait shops etc. at some point some one else had previous knowledge of the spot/conditions/structure type/etc.. it would be unfathomable to think that at some point in time that any spot i or you fished was not known to someone else at some point. and more than likely the same info that steered you to that spot probably steered others. thats not say that their aren't instant tips that people chose to, or chose not to give for certain spots. but i am willing to bet with 125% certainty that you learned about that type of structure to fish from some one else willing to divulge the information about it. let's look at it like this. you have never fished before. some one hands you a rod and reel. and let's say... a popper. keep in mind you have no idea how to fish. or even what fish are out there. and this person says catch a striper. with no further instructions. what the heck would you do? i am willing to bet you wouldnt be catching any fish. point being fishing is a sport of information. for someone to assume that someone else is not going to be out there scouting and asking around for info is ridiculous. infact 90% of the sport revolves around the sharing of info and ideas. (the other 10% is radical new ideas that then ofcourse get shared) even that crap you read on the packaging of plugs was at one time probably "top secret" info. that is if everyone followed that same rational of "i found this out so it's mine". you probably wouldn't have a leg to stand on. and neither would i nor would 90% of fishermen out there today. it's just like every other craft out there. trial and error. LOTS AND LOTS of ERROR passed on from generation to generation. with out any of the passing on of knowledge what do any of us have? a bunch of gear we have no idea what to do with. i have learned sooooooooo much about fishing from other people i can't even begin to sum it up. but with out all those random people i have run into. including these boards. i would be beyond lost. i probably still wouldn't know to look for structure at all. hell i probably wouldn't even know what the fish ate. let alone where to fish for them. like i said i understand a bad day wanting to be left alone. we all have days like that and go out and do what we enjoy to help relieve the stress. and will lie or ignore people just due to not wanting to deal with people. (though PERSONALLY the last thing i do when i want to ignore people is go outside, don't have the liberty of consistently empty spots) but to say you ignored this guy because (for whatever reason) you are entitled to the fish there, is in MY opinion, completely the wrong thing to do. |
Hit some sweet water this am and a guy shows up and what do you think the first 2 words out of his mouth were??? Any guesses??? Hmmmmmm??? If you guessed "Any Luck?" you would be right......I simply responded "Nope...not yet".

So let me inflame the conversation.
About 7 or 8 years ago I posted this story and got severly chastised for my response. Let's see what comes out of it this time. So it's 2 in the morning. I am out on a reef in RI. 472 miles of coat line and this guy is coming out. Here comes a light wading the reef right to the only rock you can stand on in reasonable safty at this point in the tide. This guy finally get on my rock an elbow away and says, yep you guess it, "Any Luck". I told him to get the #**^&% off of my rock. Was I insensitive or do I have a right to protect my turf? |
Quote:
I'd be willing to bet that since he knew right where to go, he probably thought that it was you on "his rock", though. He probably walked away thinking to himself "I can't believe that jerkwad rockblocked me". |
I'd just say:kewl: "Hey man, I been sittiin' here eatin' tabs of orange sunshine like they were M&M's since noon. I can't even see the water!!! There's water? What water?!? Did you know your face is all purple and melty with some squiggly lime green lines??? You shoulda' been here earlier when the pebbles washing up on the beach were chanting Inna Godda Da Vida!!! D you get a whiff of salt in the air around here?!? Why is it the sky so orange anyhow? You don't have an extra cap I can borrow to keep my head from exploding do ya?!?!:lossinit: Oh, Yeah...what was your qusetion??????????????
