CNN Reviews Avatar:

Review: 'Avatar' delivers on the hype

(CNN) -- James Cameron has done it again.

For maybe the third time in his career, the immodest Canadian has made "the most expensive movie ever," confident that showmanship never goes out of style.

He was right about "Terminator 2," and he was right about "Titanic," and at this stage it looks more than likely he'll be proved right about "Avatar," too.

Already it feels like an epochal movie, a landmark fantasy film on par with "2001: A Space Odyssey," "Star Wars" and "The Lord of the Rings."

Like those (very different) movies, "Avatar" stretches the bounds of the cinematic imagination. It shows us something we've never seen before: an entire alien world, a new and complex ecosystem rendered in three dimensions with dazzling fluidity and detail.

I just got back from the 12pm showing. Whatever I write here will do no justice to this movie. One word.........CLASSIC! I didn't watch it in 3D and was still blown away. My kid was mesmorized and it went by real fast for an almost 3hr flick. I would never suggest bringing a kid to a 3 hr movie but we were both glued. I'm in awe and SERIOUSLY would see this again. Go see it!

Liar!:fury:

I went and saw it today and Was equally Blown away....saw it at the Jordan's IMAX....Unbelievable movie. My son loved it too.....

The Visuals were amazing...and there was substance to it.

The Alien Romance scenes were the best,

If you Twitter check out the Avatar tweets, coming in faster than 1/sec and all raving about the moving. Seems to be a world-wide response with the various languages appearing.

Alot of substance! Story line was great and really got to the core of humanity. Cameron really hones in on the human nature. I may need to go see this again.

Estimates have Avatar opening at about 27 million dollars this weekend.......far short of expectations....much less enough to win a certain wager? Ain't even within earshot of top 100 all time openings! You guys better get out there to see it!:uhuh:

Larry, 27 million was Friday's Total...not including Saturday and Sunday...it estimated at around 80 million for the weekend.

'Avatar' Blasts Off on Opening Day - Box Office Mojo

Granted...not enough to win the bet...but that would be enough to be the #1 December opening weekend ...EVER...Not what I would call a Bomb

But we shall see what happens come Monday when they release the final numbers

What were the terms of the bet you guys made? This movie should have some legs to it as well. I'm sure it will be in the movies a few months but what do I know.

fishaholic18 12-20-2009 11:00 AM

I went to see it Friday night...I wasn't too impressed...Kinda bored me..Way too long for what it was...The special effects were ok...GI Joe was much better though.....The mind transfer thing was kinda cool...I want to be the Clammer some day...:fury:

BigFish 12-20-2009 11:06 AM

Yup! Just for Friday! Estimates are at $60 mil. Maybe less given the snow storm.....but most psychos would brave the elements anyway so no loss there. I would not think that is a very successful weekend for a big budget movie like this?:devil2:

There is a guy I like!:)

Bet was it had to make top 10 all time opening weekends! It won't!

Saltheart 12-20-2009 11:18 AM

I think you need to go two weekends on the bet do to the snow!!! :biglaugh:
We seem to be OK here but the central east coast (Virginia through Nj and NY ) got hammered. I bet there isn't a quarter of the people from the big population centers who have gone yest do to the snow.

Top December Opening Weekends at the Box Office

What do you consider successful then

BigFish 12-20-2009 12:39 PM

That doesn't matter...its the bet. Yeah...its successful for sure if it takes in 73 mill......but it won't even be top 50 all time?

BigFish 12-20-2009 12:39 PM

Personally I don't know how they tabulate such things....I think they just estimate anyway! No way they could have an even close to accurate dollar figure!

‘Avatar’ blasts off with $232 million worldwide

The film fell short of the record for December debuts of $77.2 million set two years ago by Will Smith's "I Am Legend." But it did break the record for a film opening in 3-D, previously held by last summer's "Up" with $68.1 million.

James Cameron launched his science-fiction epic "Avatar" into a safe orbit as the costly film soared to No. 1 with $73 million domestically and $159.2 million overseas, for a $232.2 million worldwide total.

With that big a start, distributor 20th Century Fox was quick to proclaim it made a good investment with the estimated $400 million spent to make and market the film, which is Cameron's first narrative feature since 1997's "Titanic," the king of modern blockbusters.

"Absolutely. No question," said Chris Aronson, head of distribution for the studio, which reported stellar reaction in exit polls from audiences after seeing "Avatar." "The word of mouth is something that I don't know I've ever seen in this business before."

Wow! I'd say it wasn't a bomb for sure! Can you imagine what it would have done without a major snow storm on the east coast on it's opening weekend?
