catch and release

The striper cup does also run a catch and release part of the tourney.

more people all over the east coast keep bigger fish than the amount thats kept for this tournament.

Look at whats going on in VA and NC, charter boats keeping almost 30 fish from 40 to 60lbs, in one week!

I practice catch and release 99% of the time as do must of the people I fish with. Cant see this tournament being the downfall of our SB population.

Is the bash at the end of the year worth going to ?:buds:

Kinda sucked last year.

The beer was Gansett, and on top of that, it was warm :yak6:

It poured like hell the two days before and the property where the tent was put up is reclaimed wetland---quagmire was too modest a word.

3000+ people were crammed in under a tent, and it got hot as hell in there. But if you stepped outside, you were standing in ankle deep mud.

The ground under the tent was covered with hay that smelled like it was used and came straight from a rodeo.

There weren't a lot of good tackle displays present.

On the other hand, the food was from the Black Dog and it was pretty good

And the cover band was decent.

And then there's the drawing for the boat at the end, which is limted to people who both entered and are actually present--you'll never be in another raffle with as good a chance of winning anywhere else ;)

Speaking of which, I was at Dave's Market in Smithfield RI early this morning and they were putting fresh Striper in the fish case. Wonder where the hell that's coming from? $12.99 a pound if I remember right.

As for the tournament, 95% of us are 99% Catch & Release. I don't think the net effect of this tournament is greater than 2-3 hot days days at any prime spot: Scortons, Providence, Canal, Jersey Beach, Block, etc...

John I have lurked here for quite a while and have read many of your posts. I respect you and your knowledge of the sport. I personally would not just base my thoughts on the fishery as a whole based on the ASMFC. Think about your catches over the last 5 years and those numbers. If they are consistent with most people I have talked to then the numbers are down in quantity and quality. Also the YOY index has not had it's usual spike upwards that it registers every 4-5 years and is overdue. That along with the bigger dead zones we are seeing along the coasts and the taking of Menhaden and all the by catch concerns. Well it just seems to me the pressure on the fishery is unsustainable. And tournaments add to that pressure. Again, I know there are many fine upstanding members here and elsewhere but if we're killing 35# + fish for the sake of winning a tournament then in these times I feel that is wrong. We don't need to eat that fish nor do we need that fish to pad our ego. I'd say that fish would be more productive alive and able to still breed. Again that is just my opinion and why I don't endorse tournaments. If we all took less then there would be more in the future. Not everyone looks at it that way and I believe tournaments can bring out the worst in some

Anyways just because this is not for me does not mean it is not for everyone. Good luck and I hope everyone who does participate enjoys themselves responsibly

They do not kill all the fish they catch in fact I don't think anyone will be weighing fish in under 35lbs for the cup. Preaching is for church or maybe the political foum. :uhuh:

Do I know you???

Well so long as you only kill fish over 35 pounds then I guess that makes it alright....

Chris I want to preface this by saying that I have a ton of respect for you as a person and as a fisherman.

I agree that this tournament would not alone cause the downfall of the stocks. But I also feel if we all took that attitude then the chance of that happening is greater. Whereas if we all took a little less then the chance of that happening is lesser. And what happens in other states does not just give us license to do the same. I know what you're getting at but I just look at it differently and I don't want to justify killing cows here as being okay because people elsewhere do it and also sometimes do it illegally ( out past the eez, etc). That does not make me right or wrong. And I hope people can also respect my difference of opinion here and perhaps appreciate where I am coming from on this. And I do hope that all the big breeders are caught by the C&R guys and gals but somehow I doubt that.

I also feel there is added pressure on results if fishermen are getting paid to catch as that creates pressure to win and to provide lots of photos of dead cows

Rockport24 03-26-2010 03:25 PM

too bad any thread about the cup has to turn into some kind of disagreement like this :rollem:

I easily caught over 100 fish last year that were legal to keep. I kept maybe 6 of them. Your way off topic and shouldn't have posted this save the stripers in this thread. I know guys last year in your conservation group that caught alot less fish than I did and kept more of them. The thread wasn't labeled. How do you feel about fish or how do you feel about tourneys. Lets get it back on track. Do I know you? Come on dude:smash:

CowHunter 03-26-2010 04:02 PM

Common Guys, Dont you know Mass Commercial guys are killing all the bass!!!!

Again I will say that just because one person keeps many fish does not make it alright for everyone else to use that excuse. Last year of all the guys I fished with I saw a total of 4 fish kept. Were there more? Of course. Again I will not use that as an excuse to keep what I want

I was trying to be polite and keep this on track but just presenting my feelings. You don't have to agree but no need to hammer me either. To all of you that do participate...good luck and be safe

chefchris401 03-26-2010 04:25 PM

ok back on subject

OK back to the topic here.

Team Striped-Bass

Is there a limit on club size?

How does the catch and release work towards the points?

Sorry I just havent had time to read thru all the On the water stuff.

Ive never done any tournament due to my lack of time for the designated spots, like the habs or korkers cup etc. My availibilty sucks due to work but seeing this is 5 months long and I fish alot just not on the weekends for the most part, seems like something worth trying out.

Ive meet some great people here and hoping to build stronger friendships with those people and fish some new spots and learn new some new techinques and what not.

Im a huge fan of this forum and its members, I dont post on everything I see and keep my opinions to myself for the most part, but I think this is a great way to make some new friends and just get out and fish.

JohnR 03-26-2010 04:31 PM

Guys, move the fisheries management discussions into another thread please. We have and have had plenty opportunities to hash this out. Believe me, I'm all for reducing the pressure on the fish. This thread is for signing up for the cup.

As for Team S-B's participation in the Striper Cup, that is based on the numbers provided by ASMFC. If those numbers drop or tank I can assure you we'll take a hard look as to whether or not we participate.

DR - as or my years, I've had my best in a while season before last. Last year was mediocre. One cannot judge a season by a handful of locations. That's why the overall ASMFC numbers, as loosely consistent as they may be, are what we need to go by.

Chris - no real limit on size. My impression I got talking to some OTW folks was that we were midsized in number of participants with one club having twice as many entered as S-B.

C&R does not count towards team standings. Wish it did but enforcement would be difficult at best.

BassDawg 03-27-2010 09:48 AM

thanks for clearing that up with,
DR, Boss! i was about to have to

break out the DAWWWWG on his,
"woe is me, the po,,,,,,,poe,,,,,,,,, PO

Strigh Ped bassies!! they cain't sustain themselves!!
you guys are ALLL evil, insensitive, kittyfishin', BASTAGES!!!"

MOST here are some of the MOST responsible and fishery aware surfcasters i've ever met. the boat guys are no dummies either. we actually realize the portent of our actions and respect the inherent values, financially and metaphysically, that are attached to our beloved species and are incumbent upon us to protect, enjoy, and leave as a thriving and viable legacy for the generations of anglers that will surely follow~~~

and they shall, on one dark and surf laden night enter in to the quintessential tie that has bound generations upon generations of New Englanders and "foreigners" alike,,,,,,,,the sweet sound of a screaming reel and the hard bend of a doubled rod as a new trophy swims for the deep beyond, to be kept or not to be kept,,,,,,,,,,,,,

it is for each "Striper Nobleman" to question. and we NEED to get back our BLING!!! besides,,,,,,,,,,,,Team Striper cannot 3peat, can they???
:gh: :btu: :btu: :btu: :gh:

ThrowingTimber 03-27-2010 04:30 PM

I enjoy fishing the tournament. Last year was the first year since it began that I got something worth weighing in. ( 1 fish weighed ever) I'm far from being a threat to the species at that rate. :wall:

I'm looking forward to getting out again with the added incentive of hopefully helping out the team. I enjoy fishing :) I always have. I'm a competitive person by nature so its nice to make a concerted effort to bring my A game.

Now if we could get Miller Lite as a sponsor I'd be Frank the tanking it by the time they announced the winners at the wrap up party :buds:

Good luck everyone, I hope everyone has a safe and productive season :buds:

Anyone get their official striper cup t-shirt yet. Hopefully it's bright red with a huge BUD KING OF BASS logo ala' an old Dale Jr. pit crew jersey. Something real classy ya' know. I would dig that.

I'm definitely in.

Love it here but usually fish in a small circle.I expect things will be different this year with a few more options for species and more opportunities for stripers.
