Thats one of the main reasons I still want to play and be decent at it. Golf and business go hand in hand. And when my future boss asks me to play in the Member Guest I don't wanna chisel it... Waiting for that invite to the TPC when it gets warm out!:hee:

Still have to hit you up for a golf lesson John.
I want to be able to tee up on one side of the canal and hit moving googans on bikes on the other.
Could be a new sport !

Well if that 4th cancels on you last minute and you need a fill-in, I can hold my own at a 10.4......wink......wink:). Last year there was talk about a striped-bass golf outing, we really need to pull that together, maybe a spring outing in our mudders when Falmouth or Cape Cod CC open; to celebrate end of this sh*t winter. Snow blower moved 8" again last night, big red is as tired as me.

Paul,

1. You dont drink enough to golf, that's just nonsense.

2. Like others suggested there's literally TONS of other species out there that can be targeted in our waters. Talk to Buzzy he's super friendly and knows his chit.

Quitting because of junk science and bs politics makes it seem as if you've had your head in the sand for a REAL long time. The junk science and the BS politics has been around forever!

Nothing is what it used to be. I remember being 6-7 and fishing out by the clam bake club with my uncle john and my father and there would be thick schools of herring and even flying fish around at times. Dont see that now, no sense in pouting over it.

Plus the feeling that your are in tune with nature. That the forecast matters, that the tide and current matter, that cloud formations matter. You know things that not everyone knows, done things that few do, seen things that not many have seen. For those reasons I would rather have a pole in my hand than a club.

Great post. I was a die hard before we had kids, I'm down to a few trips a year. I'm sure I'll get back into it big-time when my kids don't need as much of my time, and I'm sure my retirement will revolve around saltwater, for the reasons you stated very nicely.

thanks

You could always take up fishing on the golf course ... for most courses, there are tons of lakes and ponds with decent largemouth ... have to fish early or late though to avoid getting run over by other golfers ... or you can fish some of the South Florida courses that border saltwater ... when I lived down there we would sneak on to a few courses to target snook and baby tarpon that happened to live in the waters of a few courses ... a few others had various freshwater species above and beyond largemouth that were fun.

piemma 03-06-2015 11:35 AM

OK, I get it. I'll try fishing for scup and sea bass and fluke. I have been too focused on stripers as Clammer, Nebe and Bryan said.
I'm gonna golf a bit more also. My wife is a greens keeper at Crystal Lake Golf CC so I can play for free. I use to play a lot when I was young and still hit the ball fairly well. I'll get my short game in shape and have some fun.

As Vic, said, I don't drink enough to golf so maybe I can start drinking more too. ;)

Raven 03-06-2015 11:54 AM

ever see that bar that rolls down the road on bicycle power
that would be a blast on a golf course

buckman 03-06-2015 11:59 AM

I picked up golf one season because we had so many days of bad weather. My buddies and I would keep the golf clubs in the truck tow the boat down to the ocean . If it was too rough we would go play golf.

After last May and June's stellar striper fishing, I left them alone and targeted skate, scup, searobins and choggies. I had a great season, and got to sleep at night. :)

I feel your pain on the fading passion paul
My world and mind is dominated by striped bass catching, not fishing for, but catching. I have tried every other kind of fishing in the hopes it would make me more open minded, but it has done the opposite. I still only wanna catch striped bass. And big ones at that
As my family has grown, poverty has sunk in, and responsibiliteis changed, i have mentally anguished on being able to fish like i used to where i had the time and money to go and fish where i had to go when i had to go in order to catch big fish. I have been in agony for several years now and have put off the shoulder rebuild for fear of missing not being able to be out there catching big fish when other people are. But as i have seen the fishing in the buzzards bay / se mass plummet over the past 2 seasons my hope is fading.
I have now mentally prepared myself to forego hockey and fishing for a year in order to not live in agony. I will still struggle as my friends call me with reports, but the passion will be on ice
I will never ever change to golf. Did it quite a bit in college and that is all i have to suffer listening about in every hockey locker room but i pationately detest golf more than my passion for striped bass fishing
Probably my biggest influence into being able to tame my passion and mentally prepare myself is to think of back beach and how little he fishes now and doesnt mind it at all. If he can do it so can i. And he doesnt drink
Hopefully there will still be fish left in 2 years when i get to fish again. If not my wife says we r definately moving to a warmer climate preferably hawaii.....

You had an epic run, Mike. But you'll be back when it's time and you'll start another one in some capacity.

Been there 7 times. Every time I was due to leave to come home they had to find me and dart me to get me on the plane.

I just read that this year's Iditarod has to be relocated further north due to a lack of snow over the usual course.

MAKAI 03-07-2015 08:41 AM

The cruelest miles is a great read about the serum run that is the genesis of the Iditarod.
