Here is a stupid question... (there's no such things as stupid questions, only stupid people who ask questions)

How do you do the awesome paint jobs? I mean the ones where the top paint fades into the bottom? Also, how do you get that awesome scale finish? Not with tubraid, just with the paint.

John,

This is where my OCD is helpful. I'm anal about getting things right. If I don't like how it turns out, I'm not above starting over. Like I said before, once I get my feet on the ground and I make my rods and Mindi's rod, I'm open for trades. I would NEVER EVER make a rod for someone without knowing what I'm doing. If mine turn out well, then I'll move forward.

The next Al Goldberg? I don't think so. Rod building isn't going to be a business for me. Just something for myself and something I can use to barter other goods with.

I'll be open to all sorts of different stuff to barter so pay attention. Once you see my work and you're interested, might be able to trade you a rod for whatever.

Plus my aunt and uncle are huge fishermen. Walleye, black bass, perch, bluegill, catfish, they catch them all. Custom rods might be a nice way to pay them back for all the trips they've taken me on and all the birthday and christmas cards.

jenty 10-04-2001 04:37 AM

Pat;

With the paint jobs you use spray cans. To get the color to fade into the other color, you spray it from above. To get the scale look, you use a screen and spray through that.

P.S. The reason I know, is I asked the same ques. of 10x10 a while ago. he does some really nice work.

Tattoo 10-04-2001 05:37 AM

Invest in an air brush. It's well worth the money.

This plug post should hit 100.?

Fishpart 10-04-2001 05:59 AM

Hope it does hit 100. I'm defintely interested in learning more. Some more questions:
How do you know where to put the belly hook?
What kind of hooks do most people use, open eyed or with split rings?
What size hooks?
How do you know how much weight to put in a particular plug and where?

Tattoo 10-04-2001 06:16 AM

all these questions and more will be answered in the Lure Building Forum....??? :D

Fishpart 10-04-2001 06:33 AM

:D

Dont look at me to do it slip,
spray paint cans is what i use, You can fade the sides to a purple gold by holding the can far from the plug as in gold base coat and then fog with purple, its killer i came up with one day and works.Tattoo try'd to rip me off , but i got it back.
For your hooks ,depends on the size of the lure.
Up front Ya can use a 2/0 vmc treble and a 3/0 in back or a siwash hook. and split rings. YOU can make the needle go pkunk by weighting it with led shot in the middle and at 1 extra in back for casting balance. If you want a verticle floater Ya drill the back and weight it in the butt. if you want it to sink use a little more lead, also the hooks add weight so a lure that barely floats will may sink with the hooks. I use rod builders apoxy. Hay slip I hit tony stetzko's plug bag good. he coulda got me back tue night when i was in the suds
2 was a good year...... Im rotten aint I

Slipknot 10-04-2001 08:53 AM

Yes John, I'd be honored. :)

JohnR 10-04-2001 09:12 AM

Cool - Thanks Slipknot... you now have the honor & the ability to pull the handle on the flush-o-matic... So if the plug theft count reaches too high....

I LOVE this topic! YA HOO! I could see myself really getting into this!!!! Actually...I could see myself trying to "modify" more than making my own from a hunk of wood (I just barely passed woodworking in school.....and that was probably because I was the only girl in the class... ) but anyway....

Either way its very interesting to me and I cant wait for the plug building forum!!!! Good Luck!

oh....guess what??? I think I am # 92 BTW!!!:D

10x10 10-04-2001 09:54 PM

Ok here's what you do .Get some plugs that catch fish. Now copy them as to where the hooks go, how they're rigged, how the lure is weighted, shaped etc.Take it from there. As far as painting goes I use spray cans like Tattoo and Slip but I got myself half talked into an airbrush gun.You can only do so much with a spray can. Here's some stuff i've been making lately for kicks. These are fly rod size lures which I collect. As you can see you can get some good paint effects even on small baits like these.Course I could do some really nice stuff with an airbrush but I dunno, your looking at a couple of hundred bucks at least for a good one with all the stuff you need.http://www.pixhost.com/pixp/poltroon/mvc-820s.jpg

Do you think I wanted HIM to know my rock? what so he can spray paint it with a big red x

MikeF 10-05-2001 12:45 PM

Funny thing about Canal rocks ....
There used to be a certain Canal fisherman who was far and above the rest of his colleagues.
Red Top used to have a weekly Canal fishing contest. Since this individual won it so often they finally did away with it. As he got older his legs were wracked with arthritis. His upper body however, was strong. He used to muscle flat rocks into good locations so he could sit on them as he cast and retrieved his beloved Cap'n Bill swimmers.
It became a local joke among Canal anglers to 'look for the flat rocks', since they signified his choice locations.
When he passed away his coffin was surrounded in a sea of flowers that were arranged in such a way to form a giant striped bass.

Anybody know his name??

Ever find any of his flat rocks??

Tattoo 10-05-2001 01:49 PM

10X, please don't tell my wife thats what I do.....I'll be in a time out forever.

LINESIDES 10-05-2001 04:59 PM

MikeF
Great story, I fish with a guy like this, They are truly a story in them selves. I am humbled to be in there presants. I know a fue of them in my neck of the woods. Still walking around. They are not all dead, but some people wish they were.
They still making me feel "stupid" about the business after Forty years of fishing only "Stripers".

Canalratt1 10-05-2001 06:09 PM

Don't know the guys name but probably seen him at one time or another. Look at the rocks closely on the Ditch and it does tell a story. You can see where some guys make a nice flat spot with rocks to where they cast and a worn trail through the bushes is usually a good spot or a lobster trap.

Nebe 03-27-2005 10:19 AM

oh man, sorry to rehash memories of 10x10. I bumped this to the top only because of the funny antics and the request for a plugbuilding forum. Look what that forum has become! 10x10 was before my time here, and i wish i could have met him, but it sliped my mind last night that he has passed away.
