some old school jazz this week
Eric Dolphy playing Oliver Nelson this week
YouTube - ERIC DOLPHY, Stolen Moments (Oliver Nelson) ("The Stolen Moment") |
Eric Dolphy pleases me!
Does anyone remember a recording called "newport rebels"? I used to have a copy and would like to have it again. I think the story was that a few musicians were asked to leave the newport jazz fest because of their habits (lots of drugs) and they recorded together. If I remember correctly it was: Eric Dolphy, Max Roach, and a few others. |
Found the recording. Apparently they decided to boycott the festival on their own (too commercial for them). Max Roach, Roy Eldridge, Charles Mingus, Eric Dolphy, and some others.

The Man this week

Luv Mr. Jackson. Live in NY Summer in the city album is excellent and the Jump and Jive is awesome too
this is from Jump and jive album strange video YouTube - Jack, You're Dead by Joe Jackson |
If you are craving some good musicianship this ones for you. Luv the guitar work, Martin Barre in this. Very underrated album, except for bungle in jungle which got good airplay and worn out IMO, but rest of album is very good
YouTube - Jethro Tull- Back Door Angels |
while I am on Ian. These 2 may be my favorite tune by them, Classic 70's music. Wore these albums out, but still have it. Ian was always a ball live too and the music always sounded as good as the album.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZ8eF...eature=related YouTube - Jethro Tull - Life's A Long Song, 1971 - The Minstrel Looks Back 2-DVD |
I always thought Martin was fantastic, just pushed to the back a bit by Ian being the front man. Plus there is alot going on in most Tull, not usually your straight forward rock stuff which is what makes them great in my mind. But when you really listen in, there is Martin playing some great stuff.
This week was Mahavishnu though (speaking of guitar playing, Johnny is a way top fav!!) (warning, may be an "acquired taste" this stuff, or require some chemical preparation should we say) YouTube - Birds of Fire - Mahavishnu Orchestra |
that is one fantastic, heavy, song. i can remember hearing that electric violin for the first time and thought wow that is cool.

Jean luc Ponty. Man he is getting old looking, aren't we all. I've been listening to him for many, many, years and he has never failed to amaze me with his talent and the guys he surrounds himself with. Besides he played with Frank so that right there tells me he is one hell of a musician.
For me this is music my friends YouTube - Jean luc Ponty Enigmatic Ocean YouTube - Jean-Luc Ponty - Point Of No Return |
Last time I saw Ponty was about 25 years ago. He actually looks OK for that long a time. Better than most anyways. Imaginary Voyage to Cosmic Messenger are my favs. Great stuff that!
Dan for me this week. Mostly listening to Skunk solos....like (dueling with Diaz and trading solos here) YouTube - Steely Dan - Reelin' in the Years - Live 1973 Midnight Special and YouTube - Night By Night - Steely Dan and and YouTube - RIKKI DON'T LOSE THAT NUMBER (1974) by Steely Dan and one for Paul (Larry solo of course) YouTube - The Steely Dan Vinyl Experience - 'Kid Charlemagne' & Record Collection Many consider this to be the finest guitar solo of all time! You go Larry!!!!! |

I can't pick Dan favs, too long a list. There are a few I do not really care for, and then all the ones I do. Depends on my mood at the time more than anything else to pick which album to listen to. You coming to the North Shore leg PM? Bob H

Bout time. Rain in Spain is a fav of favs. Whatever happened to Jimmy Nalls? He was just great with these guys. Was listening to one of the tracks on the disks you made and just smiled when the drum "duet" started. Straight out of the Allman Bros.
Hows bout some DREGS!!! YouTube - Dixie Dregs in 1981 Steve Morse T. Lavitz, Rod Morgenstein and Mark O'Connor or Dregs with Jaco (like the man said, aint never been heard before) YouTube - The Dregs w/Jaco Pastorious 1982-09-26 and Cruise Control (fav) YouTube - Dixie Dregs Cruise control |
Great band, got all the albums, and seen them live at least 10 times back as early as the Dixie Dregs moving onto the Dregs.
Luv the dual drummer sound too.:uhuh: on sea level, an ex allman bros drummer doesn't exactly hurt the sound either. endless supply on u tube. These guys were as good live as any of these recordings. fantabulous musicians extraordinaire. YouTube - Dixie Dregs - The Bash (Live 1978) YouTube - Dixie Dregs-Refried Funky Chicken YouTube - Twiggs Approved |
Jack White - Fly Farm Blues
|

don't know what it is, but I love this song. Can't listen to it once.
YouTube - New York Dolls and then the reincarnation of Johansen as Buster Poindexter YouTube - Buster Poindexter - Hot Hot Hot too funny and he was the ghost of Christmas past in Scrooged with the one of the most memorable lines in all of cinematic history "Go back to Jersey you bum!" (a very useful line in many work situations) |
My favorite from the new Maiden Album The Final Frontier:
Isle of Avalon. YouTube - Iron Maiden - Isle Of Avalon |
