Gotta agree the ice is not looking good here in western mass, plus all the rain last night didnt help.

They are saying winter is coming on Tuesday of next week which still give it time if its gonna be as cold as they are thinking.

striperman36 12-28-2011 04:18 PM

Nao is still positive, trending towards neutral . la Nina year. With both normal or below normal conditions

thinking...............um

how long does it take to create safe ICE anyways?

and since winter is LATE a back up date
maybe...could/should be considered.

that sounds unusual Bill, on the Nino.

WESTPORTMAFIA 12-28-2011 05:06 PM

If we back up the date let's find a better pond or lake

When would we know if it does get postponed?

striperman36 12-28-2011 06:41 PM

Next week will be in the teens, singles out there, twenties during the day

We're going to make a call a week from Saturday. I've been looking at the weather and we should have a decent 9 day stretch starting tomorrow.

I'm already booked for the motel for two unrefundable nights, so I wouldn't like to lose the $130 on the lodgings. I plan to take a trip out there a week from Saturday.

Tonight
Windy with mostly clear skies. Low 13F. Winds W at 20 to 30 mph.
Thursday December 29

Day
A mainly sunny sky. High around 30F. Winds W at 10 to 20 mph.

Night
Partly cloudy skies early with a few snow flurries later at night. Low near 20F. Winds SSW at 5 to 10 mph.
Friday December 30

Flurries or a mix of rain and snow showers throughout the day. High 38F. Winds S at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precip 40%.
Saturday December 31

A few snow showers. Highs in the mid 30s and lows in the low 20s.
Sunday January 1

Times of sun and clouds. Highs in the upper 30s and lows in the mid 20s.
Monday January 2

More clouds than sun, windy. Highs in the upper 30s and lows in the low teens.
Tuesday January 3

Windy with times of sun and clouds. Highs in the upper teens and lows in the mid single digits.
Wednesday January 4

Mostly sunny. Highs in the mid 20s and lows in the mid teens.

just 14 miles drive from MY house to check for ice thickness
but someone else may live closer i think...

that's why i asked: (given cold enough temperatures)
how long does it take to make ice what....4- six inches thick?

striperman36 12-28-2011 07:40 PM

Depends who's walking

Raven 12-28-2011 08:01 PM

ahhhh ha ha ha

RickBomba 12-29-2011 05:45 AM

It all depends on the conditions. I've seen it go 4" with temps low at night and just above freezing during the day in two weeks (it was more like 5"). It's all about when the skim ice sets up, really. If it sets up today, then we could get good progression until early next week, when it should really start to thicken.

Raven 12-29-2011 06:40 AM

i think you have to factor in the WIND Chill

because it is real Nasty cold today 31 with high wind
in my neck of the woods, so colder up there
so Bill's prediction by new years is spot on...

The Dad Fisherman 12-29-2011 07:39 AM

Wind Chill has no effect on making ice, Air Temp is Air temp....that just has to do with how cold we feel

Raven 12-29-2011 08:32 AM

i thought it chilled the ground too...
and the soil is the biggest heat insulator

The Dad Fisherman 12-29-2011 09:14 AM

all wind will do is chill the Water/Land down quicker to the current Air Temp....so if its 33 Deg. with 50 mph winds and a wind chill of 15 deg. the water still won't get any colder than the Air Temp of 33 Deg.....it will just get there faster

Wind Chill is the Effective Temperature that we feel from the Wind+Temp. Body Heat will leave your body at the effective temperature rate vs the actual Air Temp rate.

If its 33 Deg Air temp and a Windchill of 15 Degrees....your body will lose its body heat as if it were a 15 Deg Air temp w/ no wind.....but your body temp still wouldn't drop below the air temp of the actual 33 Deg. Air Temp...you'd be dead....but you'd still only be at 33 Deg.

what kevin said... also.. wind tends to catch the open pockets of water and rip up the "caught" areas.. piling the ice on windward shores... the wind is NOT your friend when making ice...

That all being said...the projected forecast for Hubbardston before the tournament is looking good...I think we'll be all set.

Raven 12-29-2011 05:27 PM

was just noticing that a day of 2 degrees...... yours says 1

that'll make some friggan ICE

tynan19 12-30-2011 02:25 AM

I will check the pond tomorrow and let you know the status. Wednesday a lot of ponds that had ice in the days prior opened back up.

RickBomba 12-30-2011 05:41 AM

Yeah Casey,
Even if there is ice there today, I'm not sure it will make it through the next three days...Tuesday on is where I think we will really start to build. What I'm hoping is that when I head out there on Saturday 1/7, that I can see people fishing or a couple inches of good ice. That would mean that in the next week after that, we should get up to around 5 inches.

Pray for cold!

Raven 12-30-2011 08:27 AM

in the meantime consider Plan B
and how to best use your pre paid stay
if "no ice"

(I knocked on wood before posting this)

vineyardblues 12-30-2011 09:01 AM

gar-on-tee

Ice on jan14th

The Dad Fisherman 12-30-2011 09:24 AM

I think we'll be fine....still got 2 weeks to go and some frigid air coming in.

I'll bring a rope just in case :hee:

tynan19 12-30-2011 01:16 PM

Ok Rick. Have to drive by anyway.

RickBomba 12-30-2011 01:21 PM

Thanks Casey. BTW, Mikey is trying to get me to go ice fishing with him tomorrow in Granby. He said he found ice that had holes punched in it. I told him I would pass.
Later,
Rick

tynan19 12-30-2011 04:49 PM

Some skim ice but lots of open water. Will keep you posted. Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device

Rappin Mikey 12-30-2011 05:08 PM

Yupo. I was on some ice today. I didn't fish, but someone had as it was all like a piece of swiss. Got a trip to Cabellas tommorrow, but I see ice fishing the first day of the year.

RickBomba 12-30-2011 07:13 PM

Thanks for the reports Mikey and Casey! I will take a trip out there next Saturday and see what I see. If there's ice across the pond, then I'll hope for good ice in the next week.

If not...then I'll be spending time at a motel in Gardner with five of my best buds for the weekend. I'll let everybody know next weekend..but I would share VB's opinion. I Guarantee!

WESTPORTMAFIA 12-30-2011 07:33 PM

It will be fine ice wise. But unfortunately I won't be able to make this one. I'm sure you guys will have a blast!

I'll probably end up grounded too. I have several business trips these next two weeks

Raaaht....you guys both can't make it.

Guess I need more fireworks!

striperman36 12-30-2011 08:58 PM

Less weight on the ice

Raven 12-30-2011 09:01 PM

80/20 now that i can't go

RickBomba 12-31-2011 06:26 AM

OK, now it looks like too many people are jumping ship! Can I get a roll call for those who still plan to attend? Is this just going to be a Bomba Bro's only event (my crew and Shawno)?

mag minnow 12-31-2011 06:39 AM

Still on my calendar...plus 1

tynan19 12-31-2011 11:23 AM
