FB/IG/SC are the issue.

Its not so much that they are replacing the fishing/SB talk, but they are monopolizing people's online time.

There are other factors, like the decline, but there is only so much time people have online, and they are spending much of that on the social media sites.

Same story here. Great library of information and advice when I was starting out, It also put me in contact with some great fisherman that taught me a ton, and continue to do so.

Besides the fact that other social media outlets are more popular and time consuming, the other main challenge for SB is the fact the video and picture upload limits are too small, and or don't auto size when you try to upload. I Can't tell you how many times I've been trying to post a picture and can't because of the size limit, and instead of going back and manually resizing it I just say forget it...

I agree with most of what has been said but remember, this is basically a not for profit site. Yeah, all the other neat features would be nice to have but they all cost time and money and John doesn't have tons of either.
Maybe there should be a nominal fee for being a member of this site. John could then afford to add all the niceties that everyone wants. I'd pay $10 a year to be a member.

I am happy to see that this discussion has gotten some traction, with so many views and posts contributed in just a few days.
Some members have been drawn back in, some have become more willing to contribute, at least in this thread.
Regardless of the reason(s), there needs to be some accountability by all members..... Contribute more, continue to contribute. Encourage other fishermen to at least take a look at the site. Whether the moderators need to come up with posting guidelines with regards to the almighty spotburn, posting pics, or the "dead fish" commentary is a discussion the site membership should start thinking about. I personally think it is OK to take fish for the table. And that is backed by the law. We can all recognize the chest thumpers, which is a whole different thing compared to the excited PB post or newer fisherman who shares a new milestone.... This place used to police itself pretty well. Should be able to do so again without the mods having to become site Nazis.....
And lastly, the discussion that we have had in the past has steepened the learning curve of many, including myself. Sadly we have lost too many sage members who led us so well in many fishing subjects. The three who come to mind most are Flaptail, Habs, and Saltheart. Numbskull, Rockfish, ProfessorM are among the present members who I look forward to imparting their experience and reflection on those experiences.... Just because we have discussed something before doesn't mean we can't share the subject again. Without live active threads and discussion, this place would be nothing more than a closed library......

And I might add that the site has always had conservation in mind.... Hence no more team in the Striper Cup, as one conscious decision made by the membership. There is room here for the dinner fisherman, the C&R fisherman, AND the Commercial fisherman here....

To sum up my thoughts on S.B., and so youze guys don't think all I do is heckle or "tongue in cheek" ,,, << as I've been described as on many occasions<<.....
Butt - when you've been fishing a long time and/or have been on this site for a long time.....you seen and read almost everything. New guys like answering questions like they're old guys....old guys don't reply as much because they feel like their record is skipping...I don't fall into either category, I don't know chit, I don't pretend to know chit, and I don't try selling chit. I just like fishing.....Ask me what model my rod is..., ask me who made the plug I'm fishing....
I can't retain things like I used...and I ain't that old, I just been sippin' Raven's kool-aid too long.

Can we ALL continue learning? Sure...., but most become creatures of habit. Someone may try a different way to fish (a lure, a spot, etc)...but in the end, the old habit will prevail. After all, it's worked successfully on and off most of their lives. most don't try fixing what's not broken

Is S.B. what it used to be? Yeah, for the most part......are we who we used to be? No......some have been used and abused or know of others who have over the years, it got old so they stay quiet for the most part. Some guys like to talk about fishing, others actually GO fishing....The real good guys have found a way to stay numb to it all and just keep Elmer Fudging along...I still check in every other day or so....but honestly, it's more to read how everyone's doing (in general).
It was because of a post last week that I ended up spending almost an hour on the phone with Clammer. That's what makes it all worth it to me....trying to stay connected with the people I've met over the years. Leo said it best...."That's what made the difference, Meeting you guys".....I'm glad to have met the people I have on here (in person, not behind a keyboard)....yeah, I got burned once or twice, but the good times and laughter we've shared over the years were well worth it.
It's been pretty obvious that over the last 5 years or so, a new wave of S.B.ers have formed. They too have found a way to connect. The site is still working fine.......but as the tide changes, it sometimes pushed the old seaweed out to sea for awhile.
I don't personally mix FB or social media's with this site or fishing, but the Ffreak is right, they each have their own purpose...it's the idiots who use it as a personal billboard that sour everyone's thoughts on it.

I think a good thread to discuss would be something like.......would fishing have been better if the internet never existed?

bloocrab 06-17-2016 04:33 PM

One of these days I'll draw you another picture Bruce....

nightfighter 06-17-2016 04:55 PM

And I thought youse guys liked me..... But I have thick skin. Fire away!

I will gladly take the hit for my first trip's abundance of clothes, but it should be pointed out that Clammer would "pack" for these trips like a 12 year old... that is he didn't. Not a single thing. Plus he arrived already in need of a change of underwear, an would proceed to piss himself laughing.... True. I was two or three years divorced and sober. All my clothes were new because I had lost so much weight....

As for the milf... Not sure which one you are referring to, but there was one I did see for awhile after the trip. Bonnie knows.... Problem is there was some overlapping, if you know what I mean, so we will not discuss dates etc..... I smartened up. Made the right choice. But 15-16 years ago, I did not give a @#$%.
But..... neither of you have been on that trip in over ten years! Not a clue of what goes now. Hell, these days I pack closer to Clammer's way than what I brought that first trip.

All you original Cutty guys suck for not coming anymore.....:grins::grins:

Clammer 06-17-2016 05:53 PM

Ross . I would if I could >>>>>>>>>>> go & actually enjoy more than the B/S at the club . But I can,t walk up the road never mind on bowling balls ,& my boat insurance has a exception clause .that reads>>>>>> void if at Cutty
