Larry if you washed it down with a diet coke its a wash.:claps:

I agree with Clogstons post. It was an excellant article. I lost 60 #'s on the Atkins a few years ago and put it back on. I started back with the cardio, (treadmill), used to do ten miles on the treadmill in the middle 90's. Ate a lot then too weighed 30 #'s less. I PM'd the boss on this weight loss contest in private , but I suppose its appropriate that I post publicly that I weighed in at 281#'s. A little embarassing but there I did it. Used to love lifting weighting weights, still do. Just added some dumbells to my iron collection down cellar. Love doing the machines at the Y. How long are we doing this this for? And good luck everyone. I friekin starved.

BigFish 01-10-2008 05:35 PM

No soda...just had a hankerin' for coconut!

Swimmer 01-10-2008 05:43 PM

Well, there you go, fruit.

Adam_777 01-10-2008 07:06 PM

I am beating myself up pretty good this year.My diet is mostly fruit and veggies.I have some tuna for lunch with carrots and cucumbers.Snacks are yogurt and granola bar every once in a while.Lots of water. Two med black coffee's til noon.I lose count doing crunch's and pushups.Run on the orbitron machine daily sometimes twice.I often think back to bootcamp and realize the workout I do is nothing compared to that.Kind of motivates me to do more. This isn't easy to do alone without much support.Looking forward to seeing some of the pics of the plugs.

I've been good so far.....But I had a bad day so I'm having me a Beverage :gu: (I'm Irish...its in the genes)

Adam_777 01-10-2008 09:36 PM

Yeah I'm due for a strong one real soon.My first reward for losing pounds will be a tall glass of Grey Goose on the rocks!

spinncognito 01-11-2008 08:20 AM

This is day 4 eating Kashi for breakfast and the Kashi bars for snackage. My girl will not let me sleep under the covers now as the gas-attack has begun. Stuff is not too bad with some fresh blueberries mixed in at BF. Have been extending my power-walk each night and I "feel" like I have lost a bit but will not weigh-in until the 15th...

Kevin- I will put a plug in the mail early next week...

The Dad Fisherman 01-11-2008 09:11 AM

Just to give everybody an option before everybody starts Eating Tree Bark for breakfast.

Like Josh said you want High Fiber and High Protein......Frosted Mini Wheats have 6g of each, which is pretty good for both of those. To put it in perspective All-Bran cereal only has 4.5 grams of Fiber...and tastes like the floor near my lathe....and mini wheats taste good too. Just a helpful hint.

fishsmith 01-11-2008 10:16 AM

It'll take 100 bowls of mini-wheats to match the fiber in 1 bowl of colon blow. rip Phil Hartman, that was one funny skit.

TDF - I'm still plug shopping, but it will arrive.

BrianS 01-11-2008 11:31 AM

I went to a nutritionist yesterday.

Whole Grain is key.. but still not alot of it

2 LARGE salads daily...
Eat as many RAW veggies as you want
7 servings of fruit daily...

WATER WATER WATER....

Red Meat is poison...
Chicken is only marginally better
Fish is Marginally better than that.
BUT.... still chicken/fish only 1-2 times a week

Im on a no meat diet for 6 weeks... she says the average person loses 20lbs on it.

(Yes I think she was a card carrying Vegan Hippy)

I have a degree in Food Science & Nutrition.

I think this is VERY POOR advice.

I'm sure you will lose weight, but it is not healthy advice.

The key is MODERATION>

There is no secret. Decrease calories. Eat an equal balance of protein, carbs & fat. Increase exercise. Period.

Very easy to type, very difficult to execute.

 if you're only going to eat meat once or twice a week, i hope she pushed that fact that you're going to have to be really careful to make sure that your getting enough protein from other sources (i.e. beans, flax seed, etc.). Research vegetarian diets. Its easy to go wrong and make yourself sick. I don't buy what she told you at all. Fatty or fried cuts of meat are bad, but I've never heard anyone say that white meat chicken and fish are bad for you. I'd limit red meat to once or twice a week, and avoid fatty cuts, but one or two serving of meat a week sounds like a recipe for muscle atrophy and short term weight loss only. she definately seams to be on the extreme side of things. that would be a really tough diet to maintain.

The Dad Fisherman 01-11-2008 12:07 PM

You can't cut out everything....just eat human portions and you'll probably be fine. You need protein every day. So if she's telling you to not eat meat period you are going to have some problem because that is a big source of protein......looks like a lot of beans in your future.

Nothing wrong with Chicken or Fish I make sure i have something like this once a day.

Fatty Red Meats are definitely not the best for you but there is no reason you can't have a 95% lean burger (Normal Sized and only 1) for supper once in awhile.

The biggest problems with eating habits is we don't eat a proper sized portion of anything. We eat 1/2 lb. burgers (2 of them), a pound of pasta, a 44 oz. soda. Eat healthy and proper portions and you'll be fine.

zacs 01-11-2008 12:18 PM

Boy, i can't stop thinking that she told you to only eat fish 1-2 per week at the MAX!

That is just plain CRAZY.

There is nothing more healthy in the world than fish. Studies have been done to show that cultures that have diets high in fish have lower cases of heart disease, cancer, alzheimers, etc...

Boy. that is just plain horrible. what a kook.

i said it before, but I will repeat

There is no secret. Decrease calories. Eat an equal balance of protein, carbs & fat. Increase exercise. Period.

Very easy to type (even eaiser to cut & paste), very difficult to execute.

PLEASE BRIAN. BE VERY CAREFUL.

Unless you know what you are doing, this can be dangerous. Please consult with a real Doctor.

I'm sure you will lose 20 lbs on this. Probably more! But at what cost?

BrianS 01-11-2008 12:24 PM

She actually did express the need for lots of beans and did mention the flaxseed etc.

LIke I said.. Card carrying vegan hippy.. Im sure she was.. and while I didnt type out the whole thing she told me, it made sense to me when she was explaining it.

In any case, its a lifestyle change for sure.. no matter what you do.

This chick is in my primary care providers office and he referred me to her.

The plan she gave me is from a Dr. Fuhrman...
Pyramid
Top Level (Rarely Eat) - Beef Sweets Cheese/Milk Processed Foods/Hydrogenated Oil
Next Down - (Once Weekly) Poultry Eggs Oils
Next Down - (Twice Weekly) Fish, Fat Free Dairy
Next Down (5-20% of calories) - Whole Grains, Raw Nuts, Seeds
Next Down (20-50% of calories - Fruits / (10-30%) Beans/Legumes
Bottom level (30-70%) Vegetables 1/2 raw 1/2 cooked

Then I have another list of examples of what to eat more/less of. Also plenty of other documentation. She isnt just throwing me out there. We discussed it and how I should plan meals etc.

zacs 01-11-2008 12:44 PM

OK, that is not bad.

It is a significant lifestyle change.

I was a fish/egg/dairy eating vegetarian for 12 years. I stopped about 3 years ago.

I will stop preaching now. But I will conclude by saying that making such a significant lifestyle change will be 1000 times more difficult to stick with than just regulating calories in a balanced diet. And the results will be the same.

I hope you like tofu!

Best of luck.

Zac
