Bummer...

niko 09-09-2012 08:14 PM

so after 9 hrs of steaming we end up at hudson canyon. the nastier weather east and the bite a few days before at hudson made the capt choose there. trolled for a short time and set up for the nite chunk bite. it was pretty lumpy but doable. there were some people chumming and i got queesy after the front came through. the boat handled it nicely and we didnt get pounded too bad. there just was no bite. we jigged, baitfished, chunked, no love. 3 fish for the boat plus a bunch of blue dogs - one was a big boy. we got $75 coupons for the next time. but next time will be a last minute trip with calmer seas. last night just sucked - bad conditions with a bad bite makes for a long night. the company was great - thanks for being good sports about it boys. the lasagna was the best part of the trip

Working on some GoPro video summary, should be short since not much to tell!

FishNH 09-09-2012 09:02 PM

Camper was swaying last night too Peter. Couldn't even drag myself out to the rocks. Nice rainbow as we got out of Dodge though.

Welcome to the canyon club. Glad you all survived OK. Having been in that situation as well a few times I had to remind myself why I go on trips like that...they are to HAVE FUN! It is not suppose to be a survival mission. I changed the way I go on these things for the last few years and I am a much happier person. The trips I choose to go on nowadays have great "weather windows" of at least 2-3 days. It is sooooo much more enjoyable to lay on the deck and look at the stars as you snooze while soaking a squid deep then to hunker down and try not to get hurt. Those rough nights out there suck and they are looong, you can't wait for the sun to rise so you can split. It can take days to recover from bad trips like this.

Bottom line is you can not plan these kind of trips far in advance. They need to be a last minute kind of thing. Be ready all the time and when all the stars align (personal schedule, weather, good reports of a solid bite), drop everything and go. Be relentless about this. WHen it is happening and the weather is prime, you go. I have conditioned my wife to understand this thinking, that I could be gone for a few days at any time if the "stars align".
My best trips have been when I get a phone call that says..."we are leaving tomorrow morning, can you go?"

(It is the same reason I don't fish fixed date tournys...if the weather sucks you just bought yourself a misarable weekend...fishing should always be a positive memory event IMO)

Next time you will get them!

Best to all
SM

If it wasn't for the company I would've hung myself from my bunk. Crashed out during the monsoon late sat and was up and at it until the weather passed and nothing. The winds spinning the boat sure didn't help with our slick going this way for a bit.... Then that way for a bit... Given the proximity of the other 3 boats if they managed to zone in on one boats slick I'm sure they did well. Same here Paul. I'm going to try and get another trip in before I settle back in 12-15 hour work days.

sm - last minute trips work for you. your open availability, access to your own boat. most of us do not have those to work with. if i call 3 days before a trip to book, most trips are full on boats i want to go on. i agree on the principal but it isnt always practical. good luck charlie - let us know how you do.

That was a wicked rainbow, it did help the mental state I was in .

I told several people today that I was surprised that noone got hurt ,

And SM ,,, your name came up several times :grins:

All I can say is I am glad I went and have a ton of fun with my friends ...

Mr. Sandman 09-10-2012 03:28 PM

VB,
I know... I am a real pussy . Once you hit 50 you really don't want to deal with all that unpleasantness for long duration when you don't have to. (Ie no one is paying you) I don't care what others say about me. If I did, I would not be here. :)

I would bet you could leave your name and cell phone number with these guys and tell them if they have any last minute cancellations or open spots and the weather is decent, to call you and that you will drop everything and go and pay cash. Don't call them, go and speak with them face to face and tell them how serious you are. Leave them your contact info for them to keep on file. I bet you would get your fill of canyon trips each year.

niko 09-10-2012 05:08 PM

vb makes it sound like we were speaking poorly of you and thats not the case.

I almost stopped several times to take pictures of that rainbow. In actual fact many cars on Rt6 eastbound stopped on the shoulder to admire the bow. At one point when just getting on route 6 from Hyannis it was extremely intense colors and double rainbow.

The canal road also had many observing the rainbow (much diminished) from the mainland side of the canal.

I'm pretty sure I would have wimped out, if given the option, facing that kind of weather. Here is the reason I missed out this year. My only keeper of the year but the best one of my life. Little Dylan (means "from the sea") was born on Labor Day, 6 lbs 8 oz :-) I am still walking on air....

I would be interested in a last minute trip later this year if the opportunity comes up and some of you guys decide to pull the trigger again before the season ends. I had the time of my life last year with Niko, PRB, TT and the rest and will never forget it.

kippy 09-11-2012 06:16 AM

congratulations Keith!

niko 09-11-2012 07:14 AM

Yes empty handed but I was the only one of the group to hookup and lost on anchor rope, damn fish was supposed to go west not east! One of the few that has the strong stomach and didn't have any adverse effects of the rocking & rolling.....:yak5:
