When I spoke to the cap he said it was mainly a jig bite that time of year. But I hear you- sharpies seem to say that the pool fish always comes in on a clam. I figure I'll gut one of the first ones we get, if they're loaded with herring I'll stick to the jig, otherwise I might consider dropping some bait down.

I think f4s is right on that one.

Might be down for a day of fishing once we get to that time, I can help chip for gas and will bring a six pack of good beer.

Unless there's doggies, then it's all jigs. I gotta do more cujrls, I know those old guys out back there are just gonna been sunning themselves anyway, so for them jig / bait who cares....

I use williamson jigs so you can use the herrings, I just found they break easily

Rob Rockcrawler 03-18-2011 07:16 AM

I have tried crippled herrings and didnt like the results. I also had the brilliant idea to try and put a small bend in a 10 oz to get a bit of a flutter. I applied minimal pressure and it snapped like a toothpick. Im a fan of tube jigs. After seeing what they can do i picked up a couple and had good success last year. Although, I really think that your style of jigging has more to do with success than the actual jig you are using.

iamskippy 03-18-2011 07:26 AM

thanks for the feedback.

crippled herrings work pissa - i use them all the time for haddock/cod on my boat. one thing about them on a party boat though is that the 16 oz one will dance around some on the drop so you will get more tangles w/ neighbors than if you are using norweigens. every style of jig work on cod, some days they seem to have a preference for one style over another, it prob is just a matter of what they are keyed in on for bait - herring or sandeels. if anyone sees any angerman jigs out there pick a few up for me.

I like the jig talk. Anyone want to put together or share their checklist of items. I've only been cod fishing once and it was with Terrence so we had a dozen of everything onboard.

ATG Should come!!!

niko 03-18-2011 08:55 AM

good idea vic. i think the area we'll be fishing will be cashes ledge. i'm not all that familiar with it, maybe someone will chime in on what the area is like. lots of sticky bottom? how deep it is?. we'll be rolling up on a full moon so there will be some water moving. generally for jigging i bring (2) each of jigs from 10 oz to 21+ oz. if it's blowing and the current ripping the other way the weight is needed. or if it's a bluebird day you can get away with a nice little jig and not need pop a bunch of advil at the end of the day. for jigs - everything works, get a couple of different profiled stuff. teasers - same thing, everything works. little sluggos, cod flies, any grub. they are just greedy this time of year. and someone call terrence

niko 03-18-2011 09:04 AM

atg would definately be the first to puke :)

ThrowingTimber 03-18-2011 09:19 AM
