Boat vs Shore
I have to say I tire of this long standing who can spit farther contest, but what blows my mind is that people (sorry tattoo nothing personal) have the nubs to say boat fish don't count. Let's take a look at what really happens here.
Shore Fisherman: Study structure, bait & preditor habits, tides & current affects on feeding, affects of the moon, wind & season on their prey, changes in beaches yearly, take written or mental notes on when & where they have had success and under what conditions and year after year with continued hard work achieve additional success. Boat Fisherman: Ditto basically, less maybe paying too much attention to changes in the beach layouts seasonally. I've been both, in fact I've got a pair of shore caught 42 and 43 lbers sitting watching me type this, so I've been on both sides of the fence. I appreciate that hard work, experience and time on the water or beach are what pay out the dividends. Sure us lazy arse boaters might be able to more easily change locations, structure, depth and many other things critical to success, but to believe that large are lined up like cordwood to jump in the boat is naive. I'm sure any number of surf fishers that have paid their dues, have had nights that rival anything boaters have seen, in fact my most memoral blitz came off a beach in Scituate. Why was I there to take advantage, let me think; putting in my time. Cracks me up and although I'm not going to having any pissing or spitting contests with anyone over this argument; I think in light of the plight (past/present/future) of our quarry it matters little were it came from. Just my humble opinion, blitz you go get a 40 lber now, I'll count it any day of the week. |
I totally agree. I was out in my boat all day this past Monday and logged close to 50 miles and came up completely empty. So, even though I'm able to move around a lot doesn't mean I'm always going to put fish in the boat.
I'll leave it at that except to say that boat fishing certainly doesn't always make things easier. You just spend a lot more money pursuing your quarry.:smash: :D |
just look at the line down below...done both,,have done well at both...it's your choice an I'll respect that choice.....just don't stick your choice in my face cause I won't stick mine in yours...;)
|
the way i look at it (striper freak ) going surf fishing comming up empty is no fun. But going out on a boat and come up empty is still fun caz your out on the water havin fun :)

GS,
I totally agree with you. It is Luck and What you know that makes one a successful fisherman. I am a beach fisherman. NOT because I DON"T own a boat. I WANT one, just can't afford it yet. But, for the record........... On Nantucket, you can demolish Bass ALL season long, ANY TIME of the day with a boat. From the beach it is a Night/Change of light program. We all know the score there. I enjoy beach fishing because it is simple (here) to hop in the truck and head out for an hour. No big prep and not too much questimating. In my opinion BOTH techniques deserve respect. Kind of like Fly fishing versus spin. One compliments the other. The pissing contest is very childish. Schoolyard crap in my opinion. Tonight should be decent. Make sure we remember that there is another swell coming. :( Be careful ;) |
When I had my boat for 3 years, I caught more fish from shore. So I sold that money pit. I am a lousy boat fisherman.
|
Dead argument...
You can do spinning vs casting eels vs plugs plugs vs chunk van staal vs penn i've caught big fish from shore and from boats who cares if its how you like to fish and if you catch fish your way good on ya :) p.s. mr zogs sex wax infront of the window smells damn good :D |
You can sip some suds while sitting on the sands;) I've done only a limited amount of fishing from a boat, but it does have it's good points. Still, I love being able to walk and move around quite a bit.
|
Fishing from shore your nailed right where you stand..Your at the mercy of everything around you that the bass might wrap around..If its slow fishing and you hiked out you can't just pick up and run. Alot of times, if you can't cast you can't catch...You can't back up to the fish if you hook up a nice one ..You can fish the Ditch :D ..Every contest I know has 2 seperate catergories for shore and boat and for good reason..Boat guys are very skilled navigators for the most part..You don't see many fishing at night ..I love incoming weather or Small craft avisory warnings ...Thats some good fishing brother ...;)
|
Had boats, and will maybe get another But there is nothing like a SURF caught BASS. Buy surf I mean getting beat to s%#* by waves and wind and getting to them rocks.. ahhhhhh KORKERS CUTS and BUMPS and BRUISES.....Think I will go tonight...................

Tatoo I saw the light and felt the lower back, it's called age, your turn will come and I bought a boat. I never got a shot a albies in my waters, but today I did and put my friend on 4 of them, 2 for myself and without a boat it would have been a crap shoot. I also have to say, I understand why people have albie fever, what a rush on light gear.
While waiting and watching I put us on several good rips that had developed and put two keepers in the boat for eating and boated a dozen or so shorts, along with some blues. I didn't have to walk miles, sweat my arse off, lug a bunch of #^^^^& and I've got my teenager power washing the boat right now. Yup saw the light and it continues to shine bright:), not that I don't pull on the waders every so often. |
If you motored to where you fish it doesn't count.
You have to walk, pedal, or paddle. Also, you need to manufacture your own gear (hooks, lures, line, pole) from natural materials. :D |
If you want to be a real man you would hand fish ( no pole line or hooks ) for blue's.
|
Better still, go skinny dip down the canal....

Boat fish count, but I have a lot more respect for the skilled shore angler:D |
Fishing is more than catching fish. Just being out in the natural environment, with something to distract you from lifes usual goings on is worth the venture. I went to Weekapaug just before hurricane Isabel. The waves were too big to get my plug out, so I headed over to the jetty. Wasn't catching anything for the whole evening, zip zero nada! I had the nicest evening though. So it doesn't matter how you go about it, surf or boat, it's how it makes you feel. "Whatever floats your boat"

I go out in the boat ta get away from those who like to look in the back of ya truck when your not lookin, cast over your line and come an stand 2 feet from you when heres no one else on the beach. then theres the ones that like to put their head lights on the water your fishin an o yeh the lanterns....gs your right, then comes age,,,I guess it depends on what kind of work you do during the day....that makes a big differents if ya got the umph after ya get home.........fish finders are only good ta read bottom..

spitting contest
Well they have spitting contests down south some people can spit 55 to 70 ft I'm practing for the world record, besides that

You mean you need a fish finder? :D |
Ah yes Mr. Habs.
Exactly the same thrill for I......... :) |
Tagger, I love being out on the boat at night.:D You don't have to deal with all the amateurs and takes more skill too.:uhuh: If you want to try it some night, say the word. I'm local to you.:kewl:

How about a fish call...
:scream: HEEEEEERE FISHY FISHY FISHY:scream: :scream: HEEEEEERE FISHY FISHY FISHY:scream: :laughs: |
Rocketman said what we all feel//even if some of us don,t know it yet///////// its the things that draw us to the water //its not always the fish=========its the sky,the waves ,the smell, its all of it =for us to enjoy in our own special way/////////
when my Mom died a few years ago it was a time in my life [3 years] that I didn,t have a boat bigger than my tin skiff//// I needed the water =& my family knew it // I went down to a friends house & told her my mom had passed ,, Where is Ted?? she said on the lobster boat ,but here is his cell # = I called him & asked if I could borrow his flat bottom wooded skiff =no problem =I went home got a jug a water & a set of tongs &went out for hours==========I can,t relate to you all what that meant to me ///// we all just gotta enjoy what we have //&let others do the same ///////////// besides all of that '''''''::@#$%^^%$ BLUEFISH+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ |

After much consideration of this debate I have come to the conclusion that for me at this time in my life, boat fish don't count!! BUT..... when I get my centerconsole bass chaser one day hopefully I'll loose count!
No trolling for me though... I think I'd feel better drifting eels |
September 15, 2001
I had been getting worse every day. No concentration. hard to get up. hard to get to sleep. watching any TV show I could find to try and wrap my brain around just what the hell had happened in NY. I told my wife I neede to go out on my boat. I towed it down to the ramp, got it out there, tied it up to an empty mooring, laid down on the floor and watched the silent sky. No planes had flown since the 11th. I just laid there watching the clouds drift along changing shape and size as they passed. Fhen I realized the tide had gone back out Who knows how many hours had passed. I decided to go back in. That boat was my sanctuary. It still is. |
valid points by all. get off the unit and go put a line in water. enough already, be done with it. boats, beach, liveline, plugs, even fly if thats how real you are. have a good time and enjoy. go fishing.
 |
boat vs shore
i have been a boat fisher for 43 of my 48 years and surffisher for 7.if you have to worry which is better you are missing a part of what fishing is all about, its not about how big or how many, its about being outside, the waves rocking the boat the drunk feeling after being rocked all day the surf pounding your feet. the new people you meet, fishing with old freinds.this new mentallity of which is better and the emphsis on size and quantiy is the down fall of the sport. as far as fishfindes go, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink it.
