Staying Busy This Winter?
How are you guys/gals gonna spend your fishing down time?
I'm gonna try to sneak out on a few boat trips to target bottom fish (cod), might even dig out the auger for ice fishing. If you're not fishing or hunting, are you going to prepare for next season? Here's what I've done in the past few weeks and plan on doing throughout the "off season:" 1) Clean and lube reels, and replace any wear parts (including drag washers). 2) Send in reels for servicing that would be best factory-serviced 3) Respool reels with fresh line if required. 4) Send in leaky waders for repair. (Already sent in TWO pairs!) 5) Rinse plugs with fresh water. Replace rusty trebles and weakened split rings. 6) Inventory terminal tackle, line and leader supply, make note of things that may need to be replenished. Amazing how much fluoro leader, swivels, hooks and snaps you can go through! 7) Wash rods with soap and warm water. Buff with car wax to cover up slight scratches. Inspect guides for wear, cracks, and chips. Have guides replaced as necessary. 8) Make plugs 9) Pour and tie jigs 10) Tie flies 11) Pour lead sinkers 12) Re-evaluate tackle collection - sell items that aren't being used. 13) Pre-rig rubber lures 14) Attend fishing shows 15) Take stock of techniques and strategies that could be improved for next season. 16) Practice my conventional reel and fly casting techniques. Does anyone have anything to add to the checklist? -WW |
Collect antique tackle and paraphernalia
Ill be doing almost everything on your list as well |
Forgot one important one...
17) Develop a ROUGH plan of attack of spots/methods/times to fish based on your personal log, anticipated tide and moon phase schedules, and your inclination to explore new water. |
I am going to play my six string and then break all my crap out in the spring. Looking forward to the fishing shows.:D

Weewee, you forgot to put...
Dream about catching bass all winter long. |
Yup, that too Scoobe. :hihi:
Though, thinking of heading to a southern clime where I can actually catch some stripers...in February. :hihi: |
Watch my “bass thumb” heal
Do “Poaching For Fun And Profit” article – before “they” beat me to it. Explore “Pajama Party” for surfcasters’ concept further…could be promising… Sleep on nights around the new moon without tossing and turning.... Work on new ideas for swindling the WeeWee out of his money |
:err:
Joe, you should stock those aquaskinz plug bags, they are awesome. |

Hmmm---6 weeks until C&R trout fishing on the Connetquot. Da bride has an Orvis 5 wt and my stepson has a 6 and he's away at college.......;)
Then there are those "4 stacks smoking" days for KeySpan :D Couple hundred plugs to check hooks on and re-organize for the gazillionth time. Maybe I'll change the oil in my Van Snoopys. Mine are actually Van Koelwyns. Got three blanks on ice, and if my tenants move out or place their schtuff in the basement in self-storage, mebbe I'll have room for a wrapping bench. |
Connetquot. Northport. :hihi:

Clean all reels and repair what is needed, Change what ever line needs doing, Tie Fluke and Bass rigs.
I need to build 4 rods and redo one rod. I have already started to do one rod for the guy next door and I should be done with that about Wed. Look for a good deal on a Chart Plotter, I really like the hand helds as I tend to go on other boats and want to bring my stuff with me. I have been checking out the Garmin 76 and 76 S That should get me started any way |

Well, let's see...........other than all the above and bothering the hell out of macojoe, I'll be working on my new winter boat project. That is, if it ever thaws out enough for me to build a tent around her. '78 Formula 233 going to convert to bracketed outboard. So, my wife's gonna be scratching all winter from all the fiberglass shards I'll be bringing home on my clothes.
May require lots of.........:buds: :gu: |
1) Tear down 90hp Yami for the 2nd time in 6mths. 1st was to replace steering pivot. 2nd to check for bad piston. Only 38 psi in middle cylinder.
2) Replace spongy deck on 20' C-Hawk. Check conditon of 50gal gas tank and associated hoses and fitting for source of H2O in fuel. 3) Get a new GPS chartplotter. 4) Buy and/or "ho" some of those swwweeeetttt looking plugs you guys make. 5) Make enough $$$ to pay for it all :smash: |
1.) Make some flouro-carbon leaders
2.) Respool with Fireline 3.) Play Trophy Bass 4 on the computer :) |
I got alot of work to do on my Jeep CJ-7 this winter to get it surf shape for next season. New shocks and springs, a new overhead rod rack! A new windshield frame and glass! A new stainless steel dash with all new gauges and knobs and such! Also a new intake and carb if not a whole new re-con block project! Lots to do!:ss:

Downtime? What the hell is "downtime". If you live here on the Cape you can fish everyday. Downtime?Ain't no such thing. Wanna catch Bass? You can do it in one of several southside creeks right now. Try for some Searuns? Okay. Fall trout in the ponds? Bigger ponds have open water and the smaller ones have open edges. Trout in a stream, go to Waquoit. Scalloping hasn't been that bad and Quaggin' ain't bad either. Downtime here is no time or the lack there of. Gotta list though. Make plugs, fix plugs, re-hook plugs,re-wrap a couple rods. Get reels to Eastman's for lube, oil and filter jobs. Buy new stuff. Break out ice fishing stuff, rig tilts, buy a new jiggin stick because friends dog ate my last one. Send breathables back to Cabelas for exchange. Go fishing. See? Ain't no downtime here.:laughs:

Rigging up some plastics for spring.
EXCERCISE and Thai boxing myself to death. Figuring out my terminal tackle inventories and what are missing. Pink Spray Paint. Hoping to see my friends. SB-I got the plug. It's a big plug. And don't try to twist the words, okay? I know you like to tease me online sometimes... Can it be used on a light tackle outfit? I want to try it on Popponset Bay in spring on parson's boat. |
