The Dad Fisherman 07-14-2004 07:58 AM

Been getting up around 3:15 -3:30 and heading to the same area and fishing for a couple of weeks now. Managed a 19 lb'er on the 4th so I just kept hitting the area. I've been hooking up w/ spinncognito and his dad for some before work fishing. Been seeing a lot of nice fish coming out of there lately. Spinncognito got his biggest ever yesterday Morning.

They've been keying on herring so I threw out a whole one on my bait-runner, about 5:00 AM the thing starts screaming. I've been having an issue lately where I haven't been giving enough time for the fish to run w/ it before I set the hook (even happened once this morning...DOH!!) so I gave it a few more to run and then set the hook. A few minutes later I was just enjoying the moment.

And the Rest, as they say, is History.

CANAL RAT 07-14-2004 08:35 AM

maddog2020 07-14-2004 11:23 AM

Congrats TDF ! :)

I'll give another vote for eels. :D

The Dad Fisherman 07-14-2004 11:49 AM

Where I've been going I tried Eels a couple of times and didn't even get a tap. They want the herring. I usually get at least one solid hit a trip on it.

Now if I can just practice a little patience on the hook set I should be in business. :D

GaryK2 07-14-2004 12:19 PM

Reading your subject line I thought you put a diving header in the back of the net....

Great job on the fish!

jsullivan 07-14-2004 12:25 PM

are u using conventional or spinning gear?

if ur using conv. its much easier to run a fish and set the hook
and if ur using circle hooks........just slow the spool with ur thumb (apply decent pressure) then engage the spool and raise the rod slowly to alow the fish to hook herself. #1 rule don' get excited when u get a hit get excited when u beach a fish ....u can trip over your own feet then if you want you still got a fish

The Dad Fisherman 07-14-2004 12:29 PM

I'm a spin guy

When I get a few more fish under my belt I may try out the conventional setups.

Gk2 - Thats pretty much what I was thinking about when I posted it. :D

Slingah 07-14-2004 04:29 PM

t.orlando 07-14-2004 06:03 PM

Nice advice Slingah, when I first started fishing I couldn't catch a 30. Skipped right over to a 40 instead to my suprise. My buddy Gary couldn't get a 40 so this year he skipped right to a 53. It always pays to be a bit lucky in the terms of big fish

rizzo 07-14-2004 06:11 PM

Congrats TDF!! You earned that fish, go for the 30!!!! Its nice when the hard work finally pays off.

Iwannakeeper 07-14-2004 06:30 PM

Congrats.

We got the story - did you get a pic?
