Anyone got Neck arthritis?
Anyone else here been diagnosed with degenerative arthritis in your neck?
I'm looking for any solutions for pain/pain management that have worked for you. :conf: |
is the result (symptom) ...of the arthritis making your arms go numb when you sleep?
gentle neck stretching (light massage) by a qualified physical therapist really helps... start taking supplemental lethicin (produced by the body) to protect the myalin sheath coating on your nerves which helps insulate them too. unfortunately, today's pain killers are worthless because they cause more health problems than they solve. |
Yep spot on Raven and I'm scared %$%$%$%$less that taking that stuff is going to cause more damage than good.
This is starting to come to a head as in last nite I fell asleep on the couch and my head slipped back not once but twice and when this happens it's excruciating pain. I can't do neck stretches etc it makes it worse. I've done a bunch of research and not thrilled with what I am seeing so I was hoping someone else on here may have similar experience and suggestions. i had to shrug it off ...suck it up...and mentally increase my tolerance to pain.... instead of reaching for that bottle of motrin 800's like there's no repercussions... your stomach hates it unless you take it with milk and your intestinal tract hates it even worse when you develope ulcers from prolonged use... tylenol destroys your liver ...they even came out with a drug that repairs the damage to your liver from taking tylenol btw (as you've probably surmised) a couch is the worst place to get comfortable for the neck.... those arm rests just are not designed for neck comfort even when you use any kind of pillow set up! |
What Raven said. And you might want to try a good sports PT or sports related massage therapist. I have got lower back pain and a nerve entrapment in my hip and massage works wonders. RUN as fast you can away from anyone who suggests you need surgery as soon as possible!...
|
i just told my Doctor that my numbness has returned
and she discussed surgery... like it was an option and i looked at her like.... not even gonna happen...:hs: |
mek surgery is not an option. c6-c7 joint and it's thru the front of the neck. Definitely not interested. I've got enough problems from the last surgery and not looking for more.

:smokin:
Might be time to relive your childhood,,, of course for medicinal purposes only,,,, |
the reason that works
is because the body produces the same compound :wavey:
it won't rid you of the pain but makes it bearable.... tolerable... take ginko biloba too...so your mentally clear |
gattafish I plead the 5th
|
salty, I am in the same boat. C6-C7. Bad news. left arm and hand numbness. Saw two doctors, they both said PT and "ignore the numbness" Because "surgery is going to cause more pain, and harm." I am only 33...who needs this crap? throbbing as I write.

I'll say it again, Scott.
CHIROPRACTOR - I'm a big advocate of it. It take time to fix things so don't expect to see results immediately. ;) I see one on Lyman St in Westborough. If you want I can see if my guy can recommend some one down your way in Uxbridge. If I didn't go in for adjustments one or twice a week, I would be a pill junky. :( Heck I use to take a well over a dozen or so Advil a day. I never take any pain pills any more. I'll have to guess you have sleep apnia as well because you are grumpier than me. ;) LOL. Neck being kinked will screw up your breathing. IMHO, surgury would never be an option. I know depending on which chiropractor you go see/use makes a HUGE difference. Stay away from ones that do more than one thing at their office. You want to see family ones where you see kids, teens, adults and eldery. I never believed in it until I tried it. If you have time some day I can tell you some stores. :) Keep in mind it can only hault the damage you have done and it will help with the finger sensations for sure and numbness issues. If you have calcium deposits in between your vertibrae then nothing can fix that. :( My 11 yr old daughter goes and so does my wife. I went on my own for a couple of yrs or so before they started. We have been going together as a family for two yrs come Feb. My appointments are early afternoon and the other two go in the mornings. |
10-4 Ray more offline when I have some time. It's definitely something I've considered.

Scott - been in that condition for years. I have a gadget that was prescribed by a PT specialist. It involves laying on the floor & stretching my neck muscles. I followed the routine for a good period of time and have had good results. Not a cure, but after awhile I am now able to tolerate the pain.
This may sound stupid, but the therapist had Barb take photos of my desk and drawing board area with me working. Some changes in my workspace really made a humongous differance. The biggest change was a flat monitor and positioned it directly in front of me on the desk. Other than that --- Drugs!!!! (Especially at night to sleep) It sucks to get to the golden age! - Only thing gold is your urine :humpty::humpty::humpty: |
I have a good neck exercise for you salty.. :conf:

I second G. F.'s assessment
Ergonomics plays a huge role in this...
My wife was once into ergonomics....ok (required @ work) so she helped me by taking measurements of my computer area and then showed them to the head of ergonomics for evaluation and there was several things that were completely wrong and causing part of the problem and after they got corrected it made a huge difference. |
yea the only problem is my ergonomics changes 20 times a day and sometimes 6 times an hour so that's not going to help.
|
Ergonomics is VERY important. I do certain things that work well for me. Typically I have my entire forearm resting on the table. Chair straight up and my monitor is raised w/ blocks so my head is in a neutral position. This makes all the difference in the world IMHO.
I've been using a optical mouse for a number of yrs. Any one using an old style track one has gotta be nutz. I use to have to clean the ball few times a day. I stopped picking up the mouse and banging it on the table as well ..... LOL: that surely didn't help my elbow or wrist I'm sure. ;) There are times I can't control what I have to do w/ my body. :( A week ago, I had to tap around 30 holes that were 1.5" deep in metal and my back was KILLING me. Half of he holes I had my arms straight out so my neck & lower back were toast. Thank goodness I won't ever have to do that again until we replace a new machine! Imagine how much worse it would be Scott if you didn't have the noggin to automated things!!! Let the machines do the work I say. :) |
I suffered for years. Chiro almost killed me. 6 years ago I had a double fusion with titanium plate (c4-5 and c5-6). I know it's not for everyone but it made it 95% better than I was before. Lost 10 degrees of flexibility, didnt even notice.
BUT...the first 6-9 months really sucked bad. And I know people who didnt have the same results. |
Yah, its called Beverly...............:rotflmao:
|
I'm hearing from a bunch of people that chiro is bad. I heard this from my doc too and was going to look into it anyways but think I will stay away from that now. Last thing I want to do is aggravate it at this point.
Thanks much for the folks that emailed. I'm kinda at a loss of what to do at this point. I think i'm going to stick to my original idea of going to see a pain management specialist and see if they can make any recommendations based on the mri's etc. |
