Line Problem question
 

I am looking to buy a bulk spool of Power Pro,
My problem is I have 3 reels all different sizes
VS 200, VS250, & VS300

I want to know what you would use for all three

I would normally use 65 # on the 250 and 300
and 50 # on the 200, will 65 # be ok on the 200 ok?

I'd just go 50 across the board....

Wow i use 30lbs fireline on my 250 when you think about it 20 lbs fireline breaks at around 68lbs i can't imagine what 50 or 60 power pro would break at.

Bob,don't you usually fish sandy beaches? I fish with guys that use pp 40# for the canal.I would go with 40 or 50. I think 65 is overkill and will drastically reduce casting distance. I use it for yoyo or on the 275 for tuna.

50 on all 3. 65 is way too thick for my tase and like SD said it will hurt your casting distance.

That's what I do. I do have one reel (Saltist 30H) spooled with 65# Sufix. That goes on my All Star 1209 conventional for the 9" shads. They cast like an old shoe anyway, and I had the spool of 65 and figured that it was a good a use of it as any.

Agree that if you only want to buy one spool, 50# is the way to go. I really don't see much use in any case for anything over 50# unless you're planning on tackling tuna...then you'll need to go to at least 80# for the class fish we're expecting next year. Otherwise, anything heavier is just not required and will cut down on casting distances.

never figured out a sure fire method to start with mono backing, add braid (from a 300 yard spool) use the entire spool, and end up filling it to the exact point you want it without having 40 extra yards, or coming up not quite filled.... *sorry to deviate slightly off topic.... I use 50# on a vs200

The best way is if you have another identical reel, or one with the same spool capacity. If so, load the extra spool first, putting on your braid first. When all the braid is gone, tie the backing on using an albright (or similar) with a touch of super glue for extra knot strength. After the glue has fully dried, spool up with mono until you get it as full as you prefer.

Then, take the tag end of the mono and begin spooling it to the reel you wish to use and you will end-up with all your braid and just the amount of backing you need.

i'm going with 65# braid this year for my 704Z.

too many rocks where i'll be angling for some bigguns.

to deal with the monsters of the surf, at the right place at the right time~~~
the last thing that you want is to be undergunned and overmatched.

i ran out of line last year on a really big fish that forced me to horse her in when she began to rubb after hunkering down~~~because i had no more MONO left to give. it only took about four cranks and she was GONZO. a most valuable lesson that i hope will be rectified with the added yardage and stopping ability of braid.

as far as casting distance goes,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,use eeeeels or chunks.

sooooo, why not buy the big spool in 50# braid,
and fill the VS300 with 65# braid for CowTown tusslin'?

50 for a 50

Crazy Al is a chunker who uses a conventional setup. If you want to use 65 go for it but it will limit your oppotunities.I regretted having it on my spool last year most of the time.

Jess, the canal isn't exactly a sandy bottom. If abrasion resistance is what you seek then fish mono.Otherwise, use 50 and a nice,long leader.

i can always go back to old fatihful, should my ineptitude and braid not mix. distance is not the issue there, and i've only had the ONE biggun go straight for that part of the bottom in three years. lotsa people, been nudging me towards the braid,,,,,,,,,maybe it's TIME and only time will tell??

I have 65 on one of my larger spooled tuna spinning reels. IMO 50 PP is fine for the shore. If you are fishing rocks in a manner where you expect the line to be rubbing on barnacle encrusted boulders...then # test really doesn't matter when your talking about braid, because they all suck when it comes to abrasion...yeah some are a little better than others but they still suck and your best bet is mono. If you can manage to work around boulders then I would go with braid, IMO braid will give you a lot more opportunities to hook up than mono. Landing them is as mentioned above.

I fish both sand and Rocks probably 50/50 % of the time

I hate to be the one to burst your bubble, but if you really think that you're going to get more 65# braid on your 704 than 20# mono, you're in for a rude awakening ;)

i usually use 25# BCountry w/ 60#shock leader.
do you think that i'll realize any difference with 50# braid?

If you look at most brands of braid--there is a huge jump in diameter from 50# to 65#. You'll get more 50# braid on a 704 than 25# mono, but if you jump up to 65# you'll get about the same as 25# mono.
