swine

son - 5yrs had a fever and flu symptoms, finally got him in to the docs last night, tested positive for flu and they're 90% sure its swine since thats the majority of what they're seeing. they've been swamped with kids having it. hes doing alright, little wiped out but otherwise just like a bad cold. Now we wait and see whos next, I hope my wife and daughter are spared, I've been with him wiping his nose all week so I think I'm all done......

The Dad Fisherman 11-04-2009 10:47 AM

Same at my house...son's home sick today....flu like symptoms. headache, sore, tired, stuffed up....didn't take him to the Docs as he just started last night.

he's pretty wiped out though

Jim.
About 30 pct of the school district including St Mary's is out with it at the moment. St Mary's has 50 out of 225 out
Same here in Portsmouth RI

Jimmy, my wife picked up our son at MCC on Monday and there was a kid lying on the floor with a cold, wet cloth on his forehead. He looked pretty sick according to my wife. My son was on the computer and the kid was lying on a mat about 5 feet from him. The teachers didn't mention anything to my wife, which we thought was weird. I would think they would keep him away from the other kids in light of everything going on with H1N1. The kid was a kindergartner like your son, so it's probably something going around the school.

I hope your son feels better real quick and the rest of your family stays healthy. Being sick sucks.

My son is home sick yesterday and today - fever, etc. I've been intermittent with fever last week too. Couple kids in the Scout pack have had it as well as more kids from my son's school. We've canceled scouts this week as a precaution.

Flu shots are this afternoon. They want even the sick kids to come in and get the shot.

we have something else other than H1N1 going around too, it's a good call to get everyone in for the shot.

The Dad Fisherman 11-04-2009 01:51 PM

Its my understanding that its too late for the shots if its already around...it takes your body 2-3 weeks to build up the resistance needed for them to work.

I know that is the case with the nasal spray
Not sure about the injection

Isn't there some threshold where the school needs to be closed if enough kids are out sick? Private schools are probably different, but I thought I heard that about public schools.

Nurse called MA BoH. As long as you have enough teachers to teach you can stay open. I am not aware of a threshold for public schools either.

JohnR 11-04-2009 07:42 PM

Son just got back, 3-400 kids getting the shot.

striperman36 11-04-2009 07:45 PM

Good luck.
I feel crappish. I am goin to headquarters tomorrow and cough at a few people

leo33 11-04-2009 07:45 PM

my 5yr old had it last week with a fever for 3 days.
now 2 nieces have it and the Doc. told my brother in-law not to worry soon everyone will have it by Christmas.

striperman36 11-04-2009 07:47 PM

In the last 3 weeks , Stonehill has gone from
3 cases,
13,
43,
probably 100 next week.

Katie 11-05-2009 01:25 AM

getting scary.

RIJIMMY 11-05-2009 10:09 AM

just got the call from school, my daughter has a fever. Wife is feeling like hell too. We have 5 families over our house Halloween for pizza, Im sure they'll be hit. So far I am the only healthy one in the house and Im feeling worn down, could just be the stress from the week.

Similar numbers at Bryant; 116 cases (not all confirmed) as of the end of Oct.

I have a head cold now going on the second day, but no fever and such, so looks like I lucked out.

striperman36 11-05-2009 10:16 AM

down to 31 out at St Mary's
3 teachers.

StoneHill has 70+ today.

HighTide 11-05-2009 01:34 PM

14 yr old daughter got flu like symptoms last weekend- she's ok now. Wife got the same thing on Sunday, she's back to work today. My ten yr old has been ok, and I feel a like a cold coming on.

But answer me this- Can you get it again after you've already had it or does my wife watch too many news reports?

Jimbo 11-05-2009 02:30 PM

I can't say for sure it's true, you can see back to back news reports on this and it's frustrating when the opinions expressed conflict, but what I've also read in print more than once is if you had it you're immune. Some people could have been a carrier, never had any symptoms but could have infected others, but they are also immune now. But if that is the case, then if a child has not had it and gets the flu shot for it, do they need to get it each year after that?

the virus mutates. you could have h1n1and get regular flu

Swimmer 11-05-2009 05:18 PM

IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE WHO HAD THE WINTER WHILE WE HAD OUR SUMMER 90 TO 95 % OF ALL THE FLUS REPORTED AND TESTED WERE SWINE FLU. THE CHANCES OF IT BEING THE SEASONAL REGULAR FLU ARE SLIM AND NONE, AND SLIM IS IN TEXAS. THE SEASONAL FLU MIGHT NOT EVEN BE OUT THERE YET.

RIJIMMY 11-06-2009 09:08 AM

wife's got it, chills, sore throat, muscle aches. Looks like so far I am the last one standing. The good news is that so far its been just like a bad cold. Lots of time of front of the tv which will probably damage my kids more than the flu. I've been feeling tired but so far thats the extent of it. We'll see how the weekend goes. My son is definitely improving but I think the worst is yet to come for my wife and daughter.

striperman36 11-06-2009 09:44 AM

What you describe is pretty much what we have been seeing at school

RIJIMMY 11-09-2009 02:45 PM

everyone healed up this weekend and are back at work/school. Looks like I was lucky, or just lagging behind.

fishbones 11-09-2009 02:52 PM

Sounds like you dodged a bullet. Glad everyone else is feeling better too, Jimmy. I got over the 2 week sore throat and cough (from fishing the canal that morning in the monsoon) and now I'm all stuffed up. I got the regular flu vaccination so I hope this is nothing because I leave for vacation in a couple of days.

Back Beach 11-09-2009 03:27 PM

Kids last week, now my wife this week. Not sure what it was/is, but the kids were down for 2-3 days each. Wife came home from work this am with a 102 fever.

I kind of hope it was the swine my kids had as they're now over it and things weren't too bad. When we called the pediatrician, they instructed us not to bring the kids in as they feared something else would be picked up at the office.

The Dad Fisherman 11-10-2009 11:51 AM

The Girl is home today with it....blaming the boy for giving it to her.
