Boat vs Shore

I have to say I tire of this long standing who can spit farther contest, but what blows my mind is that people (sorry tattoo nothing personal) have the nubs to say boat fish don't count. Let's take a look at what really happens here.

Shore Fisherman: Study structure, bait & preditor habits, tides & current affects on feeding, affects of the moon, wind & season on their prey, changes in beaches yearly, take written or mental notes on when & where they have had success and under what conditions and year after year with continued hard work achieve additional success.

Boat Fisherman: Ditto basically, less maybe paying too much attention to changes in the beach layouts seasonally.

I've been both, in fact I've got a pair of shore caught 42 and 43 lbers sitting watching me type this, so I've been on both sides of the fence. I appreciate that hard work, experience and time on the water or beach are what pay out the dividends. Sure us lazy arse boaters might be able to more easily change locations, structure, depth and many other things critical to success, but to believe that large are lined up like cordwood to jump in the boat is naive. I'm sure any number of surf fishers that have paid their dues, have had nights that rival anything boaters have seen, in fact my most memoral blitz came off a beach in Scituate. Why was I there to take advantage, let me think; putting in my time.

Cracks me up and although I'm not going to having any pissing or spitting contests with anyone over this argument; I think in light of the plight (past/present/future) of our quarry it matters little were it came from.

Just my humble opinion, blitz you go get a 40 lber now, I'll count it any day of the week.

BigBo 09-26-2003 08:55 PM

I totally agree. I was out in my boat all day this past Monday and logged close to 50 miles and came up completely empty. So, even though I'm able to move around a lot doesn't mean I'm always going to put fish in the boat.
I'll leave it at that except to say that boat fishing certainly doesn't always make things easier. You just spend a lot more money pursuing your quarry.:smash: :D

capesams 09-26-2003 09:27 PM

just look at the line down below...done both,,have done well at both...it's your choice an I'll respect that choice.....just don't stick your choice in my face cause I won't stick mine in yours...;)

missing link 09-26-2003 09:28 PM

the way i look at it (striper freak ) going surf fishing comming up empty is no fun. But going out on a boat and come up empty is still fun caz your out on the water havin fun :)

They don't count in MY book, and don't worry Bob, some day you too will see the light and sell the boat.:laughs:

Here we go again /////////////////////////////////:smash:

beachwalker 09-27-2003 10:50 AM

GS,

I totally agree with you. It is Luck and What you know that makes one a successful fisherman. I am a beach fisherman. NOT because I DON"T own a boat. I WANT one, just can't afford it yet.

But, for the record...........

On Nantucket, you can demolish Bass ALL season long, ANY TIME of the day with a boat. From the beach it is a Night/Change of light program. We all know the score there. I enjoy beach fishing because it is simple (here) to hop in the truck and head out for an hour. No big prep and not too much questimating.

In my opinion BOTH techniques deserve respect. Kind of like Fly fishing versus spin. One compliments the other.

The pissing contest is very childish. Schoolyard crap in my opinion.

Tonight should be decent. Make sure we remember that there is another swell coming. :(

Be careful ;)

Slipknot 09-27-2003 11:16 AM

When I had my boat for 3 years, I caught more fish from shore. So I sold that money pit. I am a lousy boat fisherman.

likwid 09-27-2003 11:42 AM

Dead argument...

You can do spinning vs casting
eels vs plugs
plugs vs chunk
van staal vs penn

i've caught big fish from shore and from boats
who cares
if its how you like to fish
and if you catch fish your way
good on ya :)

p.s. mr zogs sex wax infront of the window smells damn good :D

MightyMouse 09-27-2003 12:38 PM

You can sip some suds while sitting on the sands;) I've done only a limited amount of fishing from a boat, but it does have it's good points. Still, I love being able to walk and move around quite a bit.

Tagger 09-27-2003 01:51 PM

Fishing from shore your nailed right where you stand..Your at the mercy of everything around you that the bass might wrap around..If its slow fishing and you hiked out you can't just pick up and run. Alot of times, if you can't cast you can't catch...You can't back up to the fish if you hook up a nice one ..You can fish the Ditch :D ..Every contest I know has 2 seperate catergories for shore and boat and for good reason..Boat guys are very skilled navigators for the most part..You don't see many fishing at night ..I love incoming weather or Small craft avisory warnings ...Thats some good fishing brother ...;)

JHABS 09-27-2003 02:21 PM

Had boats, and will maybe get another But there is nothing like a SURF caught BASS. Buy surf I mean getting beat to s%#* by waves and wind and getting to them rocks.. ahhhhhh KORKERS CUTS and BUMPS and BRUISES.....Think I will go tonight...................

Got Stripers 09-27-2003 03:42 PM

Tatoo I saw the light and felt the lower back, it's called age, your turn will come and I bought a boat. I never got a shot a albies in my waters, but today I did and put my friend on 4 of them, 2 for myself and without a boat it would have been a crap shoot. I also have to say, I understand why people have albie fever, what a rush on light gear.

While waiting and watching I put us on several good rips that had developed and put two keepers in the boat for eating and boated a dozen or so shorts, along with some blues. I didn't have to walk miles, sweat my arse off, lug a bunch of #^&#^&#^&#^& and I've got my teenager power washing the boat right now. Yup saw the light and it continues to shine bright:), not that I don't pull on the waders every so often.

MikeTLive 09-27-2003 03:58 PM

If you motored to where you fish it doesn't count.
You have to walk, pedal, or paddle.

Also, you need to manufacture your own gear (hooks, lures, line, pole) from natural materials.

:D

KLMulder 09-27-2003 04:01 PM

If you want to be a real man you would hand fish ( no pole line or hooks ) for blue's.

MikeTLive 09-27-2003 04:07 PM

Better still, go skinny dip down the canal....

You forgot to mention that boat fishermen study their fishfinder and yell out when trolling.."Fish in 10 seconds!"

Boat fish count, but I have a lot more respect for the skilled shore angler:D

rocketman 09-27-2003 06:01 PM

Fishing is more than catching fish. Just being out in the natural environment, with something to distract you from lifes usual goings on is worth the venture. I went to Weekapaug just before hurricane Isabel. The waves were too big to get my plug out, so I headed over to the jetty. Wasn't catching anything for the whole evening, zip zero nada! I had the nicest evening though. So it doesn't matter how you go about it, surf or boat, it's how it makes you feel. "Whatever floats your boat"

Rocket

capesams 09-27-2003 06:45 PM

I go out in the boat ta get away from those who like to look in the back of ya truck when your not lookin, cast over your line and come an stand 2 feet from you when heres no one else on the beach. then theres the ones that like to put their head lights on the water your fishin an o yeh the lanterns....gs your right, then comes age,,,I guess it depends on what kind of work you do during the day....that makes a big differents if ya got the umph after ya get home.........fish finders are only good ta read bottom..

likwid 09-27-2003 07:38 PM

You mean you need a fish finder?

:D

beachwalker 09-27-2003 07:45 PM

Ah yes Mr. Habs.

Exactly the same thrill for I......... :)

BigBo 09-27-2003 08:09 PM

Tagger, I love being out on the boat at night.:D You don't have to deal with all the amateurs and takes more skill too.:uhuh: If you want to try it some night, say the word. I'm local to you.:kewl:

MikeTLive 09-27-2003 08:15 PM

Rocketman said what we all feel//even if some of us don,t know it yet///////// its the things that draw us to the water //its not always the fish=========its the sky,the waves ,the smell, its all of it =for us to enjoy in our own special way/////////

when my Mom died a few years ago it was a time in my life [3 years] that I didn,t have a boat bigger than my tin skiff////
I needed the water =& my family knew it //
I went down to a friends house & told her my mom had passed ,, Where is Ted?? she said on the lobster boat ,but here is his cell # = I called him & asked if I could borrow his flat bottom wooded skiff =no problem =I went home got a jug a water & a set of tongs &went out for hours==========I can,t relate to you all what that meant to me /////
we all just gotta enjoy what we have //&let others do the same /////////////
besides all of that '''''''::@#$%^^%$ BLUEFISH+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Trolling, I don't troll and it's got to be pretty snotty out for me to consider anchoring up to chunck. I'll stroll my big grub around on occassion, but I don't even own heavy enough gear to troll them 9er rigs.

Nebe 09-27-2003 10:15 PM

After much consideration of this debate I have come to the conclusion that for me at this time in my life, boat fish don't count!! BUT..... when I get my centerconsole bass chaser one day hopefully I'll loose count!
No trolling for me though... I think I'd feel better drifting eels

MikeTLive 09-27-2003 10:16 PM

September 15, 2001
I had been getting worse every day. No concentration.
hard to get up. hard to get to sleep.
watching any TV show I could find to try and wrap my brain around just what the hell had happened in NY.

I told my wife I neede to go out on my boat.

I towed it down to the ramp, got it out there, tied it up to an empty mooring, laid down on the floor and watched the silent sky.
No planes had flown since the 11th.

I just laid there watching the clouds drift along changing shape and size as they passed.

Fhen I realized the tide had gone back out Who knows how many hours had passed. I decided to go back in.

That boat was my sanctuary. It still is.

devils fiddle 09-28-2003 01:41 AM

valid points by all. get off the unit and go put a line in water. enough already, be done with it. boats, beach, liveline, plugs, even fly if thats how real you are. have a good time and enjoy. go fishing.

l.i.fish.in.vt 09-28-2003 07:57 AM

boat vs shore

i have been a boat fisher for 43 of my 48 years and surffisher for 7.if you have to worry which is better you are missing a part of what fishing is all about, its not about how big or how many, its about being outside, the waves rocking the boat the drunk feeling after being rocked all day the surf pounding your feet. the new people you meet, fishing with old freinds.this new mentallity of which is better and the emphsis on size and quantiy is the down fall of the sport. as far as fishfindes go, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink it.

179 09-28-2003 08:08 AM

I've got my biggest bass of the year from the boat, and I got the second biggest bass of the season from shore, I love to do either, however given the choice I'd rather be on the boat.

Karl F 09-28-2003 08:16 AM

As long as your fishing and not working, WHO CARES?

Read CS's signature, kinda says it all.... and if thats the toughest decision ya have to make, you have it rough now, dont ya!

MikeTLive 09-28-2003 09:11 AM

Im going fishing!

When I leave the house I say where I'm goin.

Sometimes I say - "...go'in out'n the boat"
translation: I might be fishing. concentration is being on the boat

Sometimes I say - "...go'in down the pier"
translation: I might be fishing. concentration is being at the pier

Sometimes I say - "...go'in down the canal"
translation: I might be fishing. concentration is being at the canal

Sometimes I say - "...go'in to the beach (egypt, minot, peggoty, sandy...)"
translation: I might be fishing. concentration is being at the beach

However, whenever I say - "I'm go'in fishing!"
translation: I will be fishing. concentration is on fishing
However, you might find me in the boat, on the pier, at the canal or on the beach.

As a wise boyscout once said... "fishing is fishing."

:happy:Now, get out there and fish!

Goose 09-28-2003 11:44 AM

Can you blame the older guy for wanting to fish out the boat more often. I'm not that old but my knees cramp up on me more and more then say three years ago,,, woods, water, work is catchin up. I tell the younger surf heads do it hard while you can. One my dreams like many of us is to pull that fish of a life time out of the suds. 4 to 5 nights a week are turning into 2-3. maybe its wiser pickin those special nights ;).

Fish finder?? who doesn't have one on their boat?? I guess theres no excuses for not boating "large" every other time you head out:smash: I mostly use mine for dept and structure and locating bait like pog's and macks. I'm sure the more pricey ones are fish pointers.

I know I would of bought a boat along time ago if I could afford one and had a place to store it ect. and I think alot of surf casters would. I get more satisfaction out of the surf but wouldn't you want to fish the Elizabeths, block or deeper water come summer, not everyone has a summer late night hole.

You wanna be as versital as possible. But if all you do is beach or just boat, troll, chunk,fly...what ever, so what do you care what anyone else thinks. Do what you you love and what relaxes you after a hard days work, we know life can be hecktic some times....TIGHT LINES!!

Slingah 09-28-2003 11:48 AM

Whatever is good for you
It's not a contest
Boat fish still don't count:D

beachwalker 09-28-2003 07:52 PM

Now I am not trying to be a prick here but there is one thing that boat fishing has over beach.
If you could see how easy it is to leave the dock in Nantucket Harbor, in the middle of the day, in the middle of summer and (go ahead) pick the HOTTEST day of the year. If you couldn't plunk an eel down in the channel and come up with a keeper fish in less than 1/2 an hour you got serious angling issues.

Or take a cruise around the corner of Great Point and go out to ANY of the shoals and take a gander down into the depths and watch the HERDS of 20 lb + fish racing back and forth...........

And somebody's going to then state that beach fishing is better than boat ? :laughs:

Sometimes you guys are too much.

And most times I know that you are all just pulling each others leg.

If any get the jones to catch fish and it is pissing you off that you can't get one of the beach. Fly over and go out with ANY of the charters here.

It is a no brainer. And that is WHAT I MEAN when I stand up for the beach fisherman.......

Love you guys..............:D

Notaro 09-28-2003 09:01 PM

Sometimes the boat can give you a better casting range and chase the fishes. The shore gives you fun and mobility to land the fish. The boat has enough room for cooler and craps and mobility because you can unload your stuffs on it. The shore is a pain in the butt when you gotta carry a cooler to a spot like me! My height gets dwarfen that way. It strains my spine and muscles. Hey, thats why we got the beach buggies. Both them are fine when a given advantage occurs or when a given stragetied and timed plan to fish and catch it or them...

Van 09-29-2003 07:52 AM

You mean people actually fish from the shore ????????:D

Hmmmm..;)

Notaro 09-29-2003 11:54 AM

of course, they do. ;)

rocketman 09-29-2003 08:17 PM

God bless boat fishermen, it leaves more room on the shore!
