casting spot with 4 rods covering the spread of productive water?

I told one guy that bottom fishing from the beach should be illegal

Saw that happen Sat. AM over there - these guys had about 6 rods out. Had that hole all tied up.

So we just fish down current and take advantage of their slick. :D

You have to get out there earlier to claim your spot :)

It actaully donesn't upset me that much, just disapointing. I came down with my kid and had one hour to fish....We just moved on but it still kinda ticks me off...there should be a rule one fisherman = one rod.

Huh? One user group to have priviledge over another? Get there earlier. Some people bait fish and others plug thats life on the beach.:confused:

I have no problem with bait fishing, just the number of rods they use per fisherman. They take up a disproportional amount of real estate.

I like it much better when the bottom fisherman are fishing right in the middle off rocks, breachways, rip's. this is much better to me.....

When I first read the post, I thought you discovered them sitting in the back of your boat.

If all 4 rods had baited hooks, that's one thing. But we all know there are guys at Nauset who set out 12 rods and most of them are dummies to keep the hole to themselves :mad:

There's no way a single angler can tend that many rods, and even 4 is pushing it.

There's a law in NY that limits anglers to two rods, but it's never enforced.

That very thing is how/why I learned to shut-up about locations. Nothing worse than driving an hour to a spot to find it surrounded by fishermen who aren't going to move for a while. I can live with other traditional "plug casters" in spots I fish but when you have a guy spike a rod in a traditional "casting" spot it just rubs me the wrong way. That very thing has caused much havoc under the light at Montauk - long a traditional plug casting spot. Imagine hanging up some high priced plugs on broken off 40 lb chunking line....

When I did alot of chunking,,2-4 rods were the norm. depending on if I was walking or drove to the spot I hoped to fish. At most the space I covered was only about 40' or so all toll. When I picked up on plugging or throwing eels and came across another chunking, I'd fish right up to them then walk around an keep going.......

If the guy is tending to the rods , etc , I guess "he got there first". What I think is not fair is the chunker who comes in later and tosses out a chunk which effectively shuts down the plugging. even though he may leave a resonable distance in his estimation so he's not mugging you , the fact that his bait stays put and our plugs and jigs drift side to side with the current means he's ruining it for the pluggers.

One angler over here has a novel way of solving the problem. One night I came to GP and there was a dope with 2 rods doing the same. If you have ever seen GP it doesn't screw it up too bad doing that because the offerings drift out of the flow down current. The problem is the body that is sitting right where you want to be. Well K.K. walked on up that same evening, exchanged a few words with the dope (loud ones) and I heard the dope say he wasn't moving. Now K smokes stogies so next thing I know I here the dope screaming at him because he walked over to both lines and BURNED THEM RIGHT OFF. :laughs: :laughs:

It was great. K.K weighs about 350 lbs. There wasn't much the dope could do. We quickly moved in and started fishing the spot properly (rotating, etc.)

I may be wrong, but I believe Fish and Game laws in Mass only allow the use of 2 rods when bait fishing..

Spec's..I'd be interested in seeing that law if you could find it,,,I think that maybe for fresh water[trout]....I shore wouldn't want to ride down north beach an tell the guy's in the camper's that,,it'd be a one way trip:hidin:

Be careful , you never know when the dope has his friends Heckler and Koch with him (they don't care how big you are) . Best to know several spots and just go elsewhere.

I used ta chunk two rods and done well....I beleive I lost alot of fish because I used two too. I've learned since that one rod is better in alot of situations.

Sandman thats a no win situation, I'ld be more PO'ed If I where there and some dude got close. You gota speak up right away let'um know you mean bizzness.

beachwalker.....I held my tongue on this thread until I read that. I am not a plugger or a bait dunker...I do a little of both. 99% of my fishing is plugging or eeling. But that is not funny nor appropriate. I hope that is not the kind of story that people on this board would support. Lets face it, whether we like it or not, these are public spaces where whoever doing whatever has the right to the space as much as anyone else. It is really up to whomever gets to the spot first.

that might have won that battle, but it doesn't do a thing towards the support of sportsmanship. I consider myself a sportsman then a fisherman. And therefore give adaquate space whenever possible. We have probably all been in spots where people are fishing shoulder to shoulder. So sometimes it cannot be helped.

It seems to me the ones doing the complaining do so because somebody is in their spot. You may go to this spot every day of the season but this day somebody beat you to it. They can fish that area any way that they want, plug chunk , use a damn bobber if they want, weather you like it or not. Tough Luck move on. These people need to understand.... you don't own the area . If you take an agressive stand, you are the problem.

I have seen some pluggers hog as much (and sometimes MORE) space thans some chunkers!!!!!

Thats like telling a five year old thats fishing with worm and bobber that they need to leave because some guy needs to fish a spinnerbait there!

Saltheart is correct. It was mean but very effective. That was 10 years ago and I have never seen that again.

This may not be a solution but it has worked for me. Just don't fish where the chunkers go. They need to have a fairly clean bottom so they don't foul. I crawl the rocks in the wee hours and lousy weather and heavy wind. Never see a chunker when and where I am. That's why they call them "Rockfish"

Amen, the shorelines are for the public. Spots are not yours by right. However, if you bring someone to your spot, and they seemingly take over your spot, that's grounds for a beating. :)

I'm still a firm believer in "meat" fishing. Some-nights, nothing beats a FRESH chunk of menhaden...I don't think there's anything wrong with chunkin' one rod and pluggin' the other...as long as you respect the people and space around you. I can remember times fishing when a few other anglers would show up...and out of respect, I dropped a rod...either reeled in the chunker...or put down the plugger. I can't really see one person chunkin 4 rods though, let's face it...if a school swims by and poles start bending, your #$%#@!! I was chunking with Milo one night (2 rods a-piece) and we literally had to retire a rod because the action was so hot. It just wasn't worth it...Sure, I get a little PO'd when I get to A spot and someone's already fishing it...whether they're chunkin' or pluggin', after all..my mind was set on fishing that spot, it's not a personal thing against that angler though...as a matter of fact, I'd rather have them chunkin'...that means - more than likely they're staying put...not like the plugger who'll be quick to jump on my rock if I'm getting some action.

I'll admit - it does suck when someone see's you catching a fish and decides to set-up camp 2 feet away. Do they have the right? Legally, I guess they do...morally, it's wrong. How do I handle it??..I cast like a newbie, cross and reel their line in time and time again until they get the hint. Who am I to say "your too close to me"...#^&#^&#^&#^& - I've bridge-fished for mackerel ELBOW to ELBOW...and I wasn't the first one there, I squeezed in where I could fit - (I'm sure the Newport crowd knows what I'm talking about). Why should my bridge fishing differ from my surf fishing? We tend to think that because we take fishing SO much more seriously than everyone else, we have more rights. It's just NOT the case. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter what BOARD your on...how many petitions you coordinated...how many beaches you cleaned up...how many 'fish' related meetings you attended, that other guy - has the SAME right as you, hell - you probably fought to give him that right :huh:. You can't force anyone to do anything, you can only voice your opinion or call the local authorities...you never know what's going to happen when you make it physical. A lot of guys have BIG voices behind a keyboard....I get a kick out of these heroes....burning fishing lines, I DON'T CARE HOW BIG SOMEONE IS.....THERE WOULD BE A WHOLE LOT OF TROUBLE THAT NIGHT!! :af: :af:
Funny...I never run into these tough guys.....or maybe I'm just not an offender...

First person there does have the spot but you can still try to work things out with someone, I've had people chunking the drop in a breachway and explained that they shut the whole spot down for everyone and explained they were going to tangkle on both sides and got them to move over a bit. I've also had a flyrodder be convinced to switch to his spinning gear so the rotation could commence.

Just this weekend we had 3 guys come up on us with lights blaring on the water. I asked (not as nicely as I could) for them to kill the lights or at least switch to red. They were a little PO'd (probably because we were where they were loking to be) but I walked over to them and EXPLAINED why 6 halogens on the water was probably not good for fishing and they listened.

But actively fishing four rods in a spot is not good practice, certainly if the fish show up.

I think that you make a good point JR, but not everyone is open to suggestions. I put more than my share of time in (both surf and boat) and probably will fish over well 100 times this year, but people tend to have issues with others correcting them, maybe it's ego, maybe it's because they dont like taking advice from someone half their age, I dunno, if I see someone being a real D!!K, I tend to make a comment or suggestion; offten it's met with silence or MYOB... The problem I have is more about ettiqute in general, people have no concept how to share a spot or at least be courteous to others. This happens all the time in the bay, I'll have a nice drift set up in very shallow water quietly slinging snakes and some A-hole will troll through the area, (with umbrella rigs on wire in 10-15ft of water!!!) across the flats with lights on etc... So I do what I have to to preserve my spot, (usually it means blocking his troll by steering my drift) I think Bloo's suggestion is good, act like an A-hole newbie and people will give you space...

Of course Paul's right as well, go where the chunkers arent... where we have been fishing latly, the chunkers set up away from the rocks on clean bottom while we clean up in the rocks; :D :D problem sloved (except for the fish kicker... but thats another story that hasn't been resolved.... yet......):af: :af:

Always have a backup spot to fish in case the one you were originally contemplating is crowded or inaccessible.

This always cracks me up when I see this. There are some that think the more powerful light they have the better. This fall I took newbie who was proud of his million candle power light.....Ususally they shine it in your eyes and you are blinded by it for the rest of the night.

Those lcd/led lights are great...used one all season, same batteries. and it has a "flash" mode to hail your buddies (but I never use it:hihi: )


(when I was *much* younger) I use to carry a killer spot light in the truck that plugged into the cig lighter...2mil cp I think. Any goof ball got the "beam of death" for a few minutes

At cutty this year some dude got between Toby and I while the bite was pickin up, we just looked at each other:rolleyes: O-boy.. I wasn't moving a #%&* inch. A short time goes by Toby hooks into a nice fish (mind you there where a few guys lined up),,,when I see him land the fish a grabed my cambra, walked to where he was and snapped a shot....I turn around and this dude is standing right where I was a second ago :af: I don't remeber my exact words to him because the blood goes to fast to my head. I was like "I been up all *^%#in night and you think your gonna fish there, I don't *^%# think so"!!

Watched a guy at Quansoo several years ago try to tend to five baited rods. It was hillarious. Every little twitch and he was off and running. The rods at the far end of the stretch had to be two hundred feet apart. After he checked the rod that twitched he would settle back in in the middle sitting up against the dune. He wouldn't be there for two minutes before he was off and running again. I'll fish two if I don't feel like plugging or fly fishing, but any more than that takes the relaxation out of why your there to begin with.
I also remember a charter boat captain that used to park his jeep wagoneer as close as he could to the jetty at Tashmoo. He then would throw out four boat baited rods that had heavily weighted fish finders at the terminal tackle. He then would hold onto the lines while he sat in his old wagoneer and probably doze off. He clearly took up 150' of ujetty in his endeavour. I asked around about him at the time and a couple of people said he was a nice guy but a bit of a flake. I'll mention no names.
You should have used their bait as chum like beetle suggested or just fished in the middle of their gear. after all Metcalfs is bigger than six rods.
By the way leave some fish around for next years derby......
