what would YOU do ???
What would keep you from YOUR Fall run???
...I mean unless you fellas are stinkin rich...or can fish whenever you like....then this doesn't apply to you....( Luckeee bass-studs ) Will you allow the weather, tides, water conditions...wind...etc..(all the elements--excluding the women in your life...cuz they have a way of stopping us sometimes... ) ..from fishing??? ...I used to fish with a guy who wouldn't fish unless the conditions were perfect...(to me there is no perfect) but ..anyway, ... ..With the Fall run happening...would you risk staying home because the tide wasn't right, and then not be able to go (due to work/women)..when the tide was right...??? ...I mean DangHitt , I go when I can...and its often :D ..but the conditions are not always there...my free time doesnt always co-exist with the "perfect" conditions...but you bet your bA$$...I'm not staying home on a Saturday night in October because the tide wasn't exactly as I'd like it... ...Bottom line....and I express this to everyone...... ya CAN'T catch fish at home....period!! ...how many times have you heard of people catching fish in July at high noon...from the rocks/shore?...hardly right?...cuz theres no fish? maybe...but maybe also cuz your not there to catch it!! ..there was a guy who landed a 40# this season in July off a dock ...A DOCK!!...and he was just killing time he said.... ...he wasn't killing time.....HE WAS FISHING!!..not home...playing UNO with his ol' lady... ...anyways...:D ..eyes just curiious...if I was alone on this...seeing as how you fellas seem to know a bit about this fishkin stuff.. and ummmm......that guy I fished with...never did particularly well on those "perfect" nights... .. |
I'd like to add one note to that .....before ya get on me back about it.....
I understand that there are much better times/conditions than others ....but during the Migration...would you risk it??? |
Bloo - I have no choice. I work 50 hours or so a week with a 20 hour commute. I get to go when I can go. I've spent half of my time this year in lousy conditions, so I can relate... I have not had a vacation this year (and ain't gonna have one either) and just crap, crap, crap... Never gonna catch fish with a dry line...
|
I agree with John - Anytime is a good time to fish.
NTL, it is a (very annoying) fact that some spots are just infinately better on one tide or another. IOW, you could be wasting your time on in the incoming when you should be there on the out going and visa-versa. It's one of those fustrating things of fishing life. ;) |
Jaiem - it's more of just when I have the opportunity to go. Between being sick alot since April and hours at work - just not many times to ideal places with ideal conditions - not to mention not straying too far from the truck
|
I keep buying my lottery tickets, so I can be one of those bass-tards your refer to :), but my ship hasn't come in yet. Since I run my own one man business, I'm a little better off than those that have to punch a clock for someone else, that is until I start feeling like I need a vaction :(. Pro's and cons, but I try to get out once, sometimes twice a week and it's usually about when I have free time, not when the conditions are right. As a boater, the "right" conditions aren't as critical to me, except from a safety point of view.
|
I only fish when it's 80 - 85 with a sight off shore breeze. I pack a full picnic basket a beach blanket and a nice bottle of red wine.
BLOO, are you sniffing glue AGAIN! You can't be serious....what am I doing on this computer anyway? |
If you don't go you'll never know.I don't live near anything.Every time I go fishing it's an expedition.I gotta either just go or try to guess when and where blind.Once I figure out a pattern to the fishing I can be more selective as to when but even then I'm just guessing.Forget where... I know where,When is what counts.
|
...but you bet your bA$$...I'm not staying home on a Saturday night in October because the tide wasn't exactly as I'd like it...
...Bottom line....and I express this to everyone...... ya CAN'T catch fish at home....period!! Quote / Unquote.... |
When I can get out I go, the heck with the tides. I do however try to plan my trips ahead a little so I have the conditions on my side.
|
my last 3 trips were not optimum fishing weather but Im still there plugging along . I love the wind and snot . I get out when ever I can and where ever I can . Time to fish CT waters till next spring . When is the weather bad on block so I can go there too . I fish when my job and daughters allow . My wife doesnt care , she sees me in the winter !
|
Perfect Conditions
There are always "Prefered Conditions" for me at certain locations. The way I see it, You can always find somewhere productive to fish no matter of the wind, tide, time. There are certain spots that I will fish on a Honkin' Noreaster', there are certain spots I will fish on a NW wind, and different spots that I will fish on Southerly winds. Now certain tides plus winds will dictate where I will fish...
|
Come hell or high water , Smokey and I fish Friday nights. :)
|
I think that if you know the area that you fish you cant go wrong. inlets are a great example, fish the incoming at the mouth chase them up stream and work them back out.
I am only able to fish the coast maybe twice a year so come h-ll or high water, rain, sun, winds or whatever hits I am on the water. |
.....:) ..I must say, its nice to hear there are no wussssies here....
...Ken (C.H.)...very true...but still ..some nights are very far-fetched, with work dictating how long you can stay out...and all'... ...but after spending the night with ya, you've proven to me...that I'm not alone..this addiction is a strong one... ..I've tried diluting my habit with an occasional bowling trip or chicken chasing....and sometimes cow tippin'...but at the end of the night I always end up with my rod in my hand ..:D one way or the other... ..Men, Keep up the good work...time is short, cows are fat...and if you blink too many times ....ITS OVER!!! .................................................. .................................................. ..... ~BLOO~ |
What keeps me away. Hmmm
Well most of my fishing is done on instinct. If I don't have the feeling then I don't go or I go and I quit early. I live close enough to the beach that I can tell the conditions. I've also been fishing for so many years, I can take a look at the sky and feel the wind and have a pretty good idea of what's gonna go down. The other thing that also makes me stop is lightning. Graphite and Lightning are not a good mix. Add to that I'm 100 yards off shore and the highest point is me or the rod, you can see why I call it quits. The good thing about the reef is as long as the wind is perpindicular, you can find a side to fish. The one other thing that makes me stop fishing is crowds. The reef isn't too much of a problem because when it's high, only people out there are fishermen. When it's low, you have enough room to cast although it can get tricky if there are fly guys there. But the beach and the fake jetty can be rough. Walkers are all around. Then on the beach, you have dogs, walkers, horses, and little kids. It can get complicated. I try to find a quiet spot but if I can't, I can't and I might as well pack it in. |

************************************************* These hip boots aren't cutting it , its getting so deep I need to change into my waders. Much more and I'll need some scuba gear! :) |
OUch!!!!!!!:p :p
CSK |
I was waiting for someone to reply in regards to the pile of steaming discharge. :)
Saltheart, you hit the nail right on the head! |
You can almost always catch crap at a discharge pipe too...
Do you believe that you are THAT SKILLED, that you can fish on INSTINCT? (I'm looking for an image of that cartoon with the dog crying because it's laughing so hard and rolling around on the ground pounding it's fists in hysterics - if anyone has that please put it here and then send it to me - thanks) I consider myself to be very AVERAGE in skill and instinct and I've had some incredible fisherman take me under their wings and show me the ropes PLUS having MANY more hours on the water than you - but hey, I'm not the brightest bulb on the tree. I'm truly amazed that after your reading all of these books and complaining that there are never any fish in your area (not that you went very much to find that out on your own) and that you have accumulated that vast amount of knowlege in so few hours on so few trips to so few places that you have the STONES to say your "INSTINCT" can tell you when to stay in or go. I'm impressed. I might just need to turn the keys to the site over to you. ;) OK - Serious question, do you forget that when you post malarkey like this, people snicker uncontrollably? Or is it just some urge to let the fingers hit which keys they want without thought? Come on - which is it??? I think everyone would be FAR MORE IMPRESSED if you started DOING instead of TYPING it. capiche?? |
John,
Are the keys those new kind that you have to go back to the dealer to have duplicated with the computer chip in them, or are they the standard GMC truck style? :D Signed, Tattoo - Resident wise arse! |
C'mon Pat just go when you can. You never know when fish show up. You can narrow it down with YEARS of experiance using tides, wind direction, and other variables but getting out as much as possible is the best way. There are times when that instict thing does hit me but I'll be wrong as often as I'm right. Just get out!

ummmm....maybe some of you fellers have heard me say this before..
.Quote:........_____________________________...... ..................... I'm new to this site sooo... ..I needs to feels yous guys out.. ..come ear' let me feal ya... and how come ya don't smell like fish>??? ..get out there will ya...you guys are wastin time... ..tic ..toc ....tic .....toc look at yer watch right now...is the seconds hand moving??? well what does that tell ya...you'll have plenty of time for this in a month or so.. ..GO FISH!!! |
Here we go again...
Funny thing... I saw him wetting a line a LOT more than most of you in RI...
heheheh.. |
Funny, I had been up for over 24 hours when i met you....12 of it was fishing....
|
Funny..Everyone was still fishing while he had already quit...
No need to defend Patrick...he can defend himself...but his hand has been called. Charlie |

Hey Charlie, dont ya remember? That was Patrick wading out there that night at Deep Hole. Hey Patrick, wanna go out to Naps with me and Charlie?
|
Heh heh heh...
I have a nice view of Stamford, CT harbor outside of my office window. Da boids is woikin' da watuh right now...blues and bass busting all over...yeah the water is kinda stinky right now...but even if I don't make the trek out to RI or Long Island, NY...I get my fill of fall run during lunch and after work... Heh heh heh... :D |
No Bloo, when I met Patrick and his wife....
I never met you other than with booze vision at Flo's. For the record - I have invited this guy over many times....he has said no, I am too good for you every time...:( |
He said booze vision :):D
I like to go fishing whenever the occasion arises, or as long as I don't push the envelope too much which has been alot this year. Even if I can only get our for a few hours, it's better than sitting home staring at this computer at night. Come to think of it , I may just run out the door when the wife gets home at 8. |
Some comments are just too funny to ignore. All in fun.
Yes I'll give both Patrick and Mindi credit for showing up and fishing at the 4th leg. They both did well. |
Instinct, yep. That's what I use. I'm not saying it's based on skill. It's about being in touch with nature. Going back to a more primitive side. A while back, I came to the conclusion fish act on instinct, why shouldn't I?
When we were in Rhode Island. Mindi and I moved off to the front of the shop to just chill on the front stoop. I told her I didn't want to go. Wanna know why? I didn't have the feeling. And whattya know? The big skunk. I'm not saying it's 100% accurate but it's accurate enough to where I trust it. |
Fishing on instinct....
I put ALOT of time in fishing for striped bass and I can tell you this, Many, Many times I have been proved wrong. I have caught some of my biggest Bass on nights were I wasn't motivated because of the weather and tides. But you know what, stripers don't read the Striper Handbook and many times they are not where YOU think they are supposed to be. Yes, as I stated earlier there are places that I prefer to fish on certain tides and winds that increase you're odds on a cow. You do have to be out there to catch fish, NOBODY can say it doesn't feel right and guarantee that there are no fish around. I can pretty much ALWAYS find atleast A Fish on Any given night from April through November regardless of conditions, (Even if "IT DOESN'T FEEL RIGHT"), just depends on where I feel like driving to. What's getting Skunked?
|
If your not wetting a line you can't catch them, just wish I had the luxury of all the time in the world, maybe then I could use my instincts :) to pick the right days/tides/winds/locations. Until then, I grab the fishing time I can and consider myself lucky.

GOD IM TO SEXY FOR MY bASS.........
|
Well well well.
Since we like to attack people on other boards because we lack the nuts to do so. This is what my mom calls, "Sinking to their level" If I make a post, I fess up to it. The live lining method is called the Dog-Run method. Second, THE KAYAK AT THE RACE POST WAS NOT MINE! Jesus Christ. The Race is all the way up the freaking CT coast. Most of you know I don't drive. Do you think I'm going to paddle up there or perhaps sprout wings and fly my ass there? Why the hell would I go to the race when I have plenty of great fishing spots here? Middle ground, Sunken Island, the Dumping grounds, Can 18, the spindle, Black Rock Harbor, Bridgeport Harbor, Southport, Mill river inflow, Penfield Reef and Tidemill bridge. Why would I paddle to the Race? I just don't get SOL. For as much as they don't like me, they keep talking about me like Mindi said. For all I care, all those people who say the negative stuff can go screw themselves. Now me fishing. As I recall. Who was it fishing when everyone else was sitting on the rocks talking? Me and Mindi and RedCrbber tossed an eel for a while. Who was it suiting up when you guys said central beach or east beach was too big to fish? I believe it was me, Mindi, Saltheart and Smokey. (It should be noted that Saltheart and Smokey actually stayed) Who was one of the first to suit up when everyone else was saying the waves in front of the Andrea were too big? Could that be me again? Gee, I think it was. I only called it quits when I saw the birds moving out. And yes, Mindi and I had to leave early because Chris was nice enough to drive us to Fairfield and we had to be up early the next day. We felt enough of an inconvienance as it was, we didn't want to see Chris wait around for us to get our ducks in a row. I'm not saying my instincts are perfect. I'm not saying I'm perfect. And I'm not saying the fish always cooperate. And I'm definitely not saying I'm the best angler around. But I truly believe that when I hook up, it's more then luck. I take into account what time of year, what time of day, tide, wind, skys, presence of bait, presence of birds, and everything else that surrounds me. That's what I'm referring to when it comes to instincts. Anyone that has fished for a while, knows MOST of the time, fish act in patterns. And yes, sometimes I do fish when I don't have the feeling and yes, sometimes I hook up when I don't have the feeling that there are active fish. It's a sad world these days when people have to go behind ones back and crack jokes. That's called being a freaking coward. Grow a set. |
...
Well said..love :)
By the way, I never meant to imply that you all weren't doing tons of fishing on the weekend in RI, I got there late. and patrick would have stayed out later if not for the fact that I was beat and we had to get up early. Anyway, we had a good time, coming home to more crap on SOL is no surprise really...lol.. mindi |
