Due to a busy scedule this month i think i am done with night bass fishing. I can get out in the afternoons and think i want to give togging a whirl. I've never togged from shore before and am looking for some advice on Hooks, weight, and general techniques for cathing ol' mister white chin.

anyone got some tips? I know where to go.... just not shure how to do it.

Virginia style hooks in 4/0, crabs for bait, From shore I would probably use a fishfinder to improve sensitivity on the pick up. Weight must be enough to hold the rig perfectly still on the bottom. You'll loose a lot of lead if you're fishing in the right places.

spence 10-26-2005 03:19 PM

8/0 hook, you want to liveline scup...the bigger the better.

Tog hate scup :humpty:

Notaro 10-26-2005 03:23 PM

1/0-4/0 gami octopus hook.

spence 10-26-2005 03:35 PM

I've just used a simple rig from shore...a 2' length of mono off a swivel with a dropper loop in the upper 1/4. Tie the sinker to the bottom and loop a pre-tied blackfish leader onto the dropper. If the crabs are large, cut them in 1/2...and always break the legs at the joint. You just want the stubs hanging off the body.

It's a really fast take.

I love Toggin' :cool:

RIROCKHOUND 10-27-2005 02:28 PM

Real men dont catch tog....

They catch BLACKFISH;;;;
never called it a tog will I met SoCo boys...

we all know real men catch em from boats anyways... in Dec... when its below 0 wind chills :D

it's the most wonderful time of the year :D

E' I hope you do a better job of filleting them then you did on the one I gave you; course they get hard to fillet when they are the size of keeper bass :soon:

Tony; anything over 10 is a moose...
my best is 14+, my old mans best is 17+.... I love blackfish :D

RIROCKHOUND 10-27-2005 02:31 PM

In case I didnt make it clear;
I love to catch blackfish...

The only time I tried it from the surf I got skunked, but met the elsuive goosefish for the first time
In the boat; 40lb mono, no leader, 3 surgeons loops, top two get 8/0 hooks, the bottom gets a sinker... put the biggest F'ing crabs you can on and go for it

RIROCKHOUND 10-27-2005 02:40 PM

Spence;
Never take the legs off!!!! hook it through the knuckle at the base of the legs, the legs add the the attraction.. blackfish are visual hunters...
sharp hooks and a HARD hook set..
On green crabs I leave claws and all, just take the claws of on bigger crabs

i'm new here, but i respectfully disagree. i like the legs off cuz i think it's easier to get the crab in their mouths. they're not bass. they got relatively small mouths.

i also dont like whole crabs. we use only crab halves (i think it smells a whole lot more) with no legs.

we do ok. you should see the looks of the boats around you that arent catching and your cooler is full and you're throwing back 5 lb'ers.

here's a pic of the next day....the largest was just about 9 lbs. those blues were 8 and 9 lbs for reference.

RIROCKHOUND 10-27-2005 04:38 PM

JoeyM; Welcome and it's good to disagree...
Just my opinion; legs on... we've been togging for generations, when I grew up we were still selling rod and reel....
I haven't had a season without a tog over 10 in a while...
Big crabs, big hooks, big togs, do other methods catch? of course...
As far as a small mouth, we use baits the size of my fist... tap..tap..BANG..
They can open that maw up pretty wide....

when you see the expression on boats when you toss back 9's and 10's....... :D

Ya might wanna tear off the carapace as well. At least that was what I was shown by a friend of mine who is a commercial guy. This was in a boat, though. There's a "knack" to tearing it off without tearing your fingers instead.

I ate that fish :drool:

Goose 10-27-2005 06:28 PM

I like cutting my legs in half. The ideal bait for me would be a big crab cut in half, peal the shell and legs cut at the nuckle. That may not be the big tog bait but you will hook up consisantly. Buzz bay is smokin commerial tog.

Nebe 10-27-2005 07:14 PM

this is what i am going to try.. hi-lo top hook gets a clam belly and the bottom gets a crab. In my wildest fishgasm dream i get a double hookup.. tog on crab and bass on clam :D

spence 10-27-2005 08:52 PM

Them togz will take the clams too :humpty:

After talking with Spence last night it was revealed that of course all of the above will catch blackfish, legs off, legs on, shell off shell on....
my sentiment has always been; why bother doing all that... too much work, and if they cant get it in their mouth I dont want em on my hook :D

tight lines and be safe out there this fall...

Mr. Sandman 10-28-2005 12:14 PM

At this moment I am more interested in targeting tog then bass...I am bassed out for 05 (I also injured my ankle (while surf fishing) and will be hobbling around for the rest of 05 so catching a few tog from the boat sounds like a lot of fun!)
I love bass fishing, don't get me wrong but the fall run is not all it is cracked up to be compared to years past. Nowadays, I do better in the suds in June then Oct-Nov anyway.

As soon as the seas calm down I will be out in BB looking for rockpiles to drag some crabs across. I noticed they use green crabs here, when I fished them in NY they seem to smaller fiddler crabs.

I am no expert on toggin,In fact I have only gone a handful of times before and don't know the toggin grounds that well here. Most guys I know anchor but can you drift for them until out target them? I don't know all the spots and this is a specices where you need to be right on top of them. Anchoring can be a pain if you need to move 10X to find them.

If anyone would like to PM me some good tog numbers in the WoodsHole/Buzzards Bay area please feel free :thanks:

With tog I would keep both hooks on the bottem,, you'll do 10 times better. Scup same thing....keep it on the bottem.
I got say..I like your thionk RIRockhound

RIROCKHOUND 10-31-2005 08:35 AM

Big crabs, big baits, big tog;
not interested in filling the boat; we usually take a few fish each a day and then c&r... trophy huntin... my 15 is out there somewhere :D

Mr. Sandman 10-31-2005 06:50 PM

Had a incredible day today, probably the fastest action I have seen. I forgot how much fun it it to fish for these bull-dogs of the sea. They can steal bait faster then you can say rockpile and a 7# fish puts up an amazing fight!
