Best Version of Fav. Songs:
 

Since we've been talking a lot about music lately, let's hear your favorite versions of particular songs. For instance, there are many version sof "Symphathy for the Devil" out there but my all time favorite version of the trackis from Circus. Two others I think are the best:

U2's version of "Bad" from Live Aid
Crowes "My Morning Song" @ Hammerstein on Easter Sunday 05' (19 minutes, I can send if anybody interested).

Simple Kind of Man - Shinedown......Used that one for a Scout Graduation Presentation...I think it blows Skynard's version away. also think it speaks right to what we're trying to instill in the kids.

i love the deads' cover of dylans' the mighty quinn. saw it live as an encore back in '86- brought the place down!

I'd have to agree with the Allman Bros version of "Stormy Monday".
Stevie Ray's "Voodoo Chile" comes to mind as well.
James Taylor's versions of just about any other songwriters material, including, but not exclusive to, Carol King's "You've Got a Friend" and Buddy Holly's "Everyday".
Beatles' version of "Twist And Shout".
Hendrix version of "Watchtower".
The list goes on and on, to be sure.
Sometimes, though, there's just no way to improve on the original: "Turn The Page".

But it takes a real gifted talent to write a song , perform it, and make it a hit!!!

Also, Les Claypool's flying Frog Brigades tribute to Floyds 'Animals' is better than the original IMO..

Even Dylan thought that Hendrix nailed "Watchtower".

I like remakes. Sometimes sounds like a different song all together. Couple more off the top of my head:

Thats because Dylan is/was a great peot/songwriter,
but a hack as a performer!!!

Just the opposite,
Frank Sinatra was the most successful performer of the last 100 years, but I don't think he wrote 1 song or played 1 instrument

Never wrote a hit song or could decide what key to sing in. Old Blue Eyes was a real curiosity. I like his stuff, but what made him a star?

A voice like that is the consummate instrument. Frank ruled in the 40's-60's

I'm reluctant to admit I own Dub side of the moon because every song is lame with th exception of time.Please don't blaspheme Animals that way.Learn about Blue Floyd,you'll be glad you did.

i like "how soon is now" by love spit love better then the original by the smiths..

you have to hear les claypools version of animals to understand.. I honestly think its a better version. tighter, more explosive in parts.... its excellent, and best of all buckethead is on guitar :hihi:

I think he's actually a pretty good rythmn guitarist and at times has had great backing bands, most of the key parts of the Band being one of them.

Definitely an unreliable performer though, I've seen both incredible shows as well as boring, incoherent ones...

I prefer Derek and the Dominoes' version of Little Wing to Hendrix's.

Sinatra's genius was in phrasing, articulation and clarity of tone. He was to the human voice what Doc Severinsen is to the trumpet. Who I never really "got" was Dean Martin :rollem:

Foo Fighters covering Floyds "Have a Cigar" gets my vote, soooooo good. Grohl rocks!!!:jump:

Another good cover album is "Deadicated" with various artists doing different GD songs -- Suzanne Vega-Cassidy, Burning Spear-Prophet, Elvis Costello- Ship of Fools are some

I dont know, I like the Dub Side, especially Us & Them

its good....but not as good as the original..imo.....Les aint that good of a singer...some parts are painful

Anthrax does a version of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath from the import Attack of the Killer Bs.

A ton of good stuff by Metallica on Garage Inc.Way to much to list here.

Pantera does a Sabbath tune also.Planet Caravan on the Far Beyond Driven CD.

I suppose it would count, except that when The Mothers covered "Happy Together", the 2 guys that WERE the Turtles were IN The Mothers Of Invention (Howard Kaylan & Mark Volman; aka Flo & Eddie).
The Turtles went through many different encarnations, but always revolved around Kaylan & Volman. For the record, "Happy Together" was written by Gary Bonner and Alan Gordon, who were in a band in NY called the Magicians.

Didn't they also cover Laguna Sunrise and, if I'm not mistaken, they did a version of N.I.B. that has Ozzy on the Vocals

I know the newer version of NIB is done by Primus with Ozzy on vocals.I can't recall Laguna Sunrise being done by Pantera but I have some fairly obscure Pantera recordings that could very well have it.
