well...

I am a proud new owner of a '71 mako 19.

Anyone have one?? I know that the transoms are prone to rot, and the decks can go bad, but what are the major things to look for??

Nebe 06-21-2006 09:03 PM

oh yeah.. the steering is frozen solid.. gotta change all the control cables. :musc:

Raven 06-21-2006 09:20 PM

AYE'......
who left the door open

bluzjamer 06-21-2006 11:47 PM

Big hole in water that we toss money into. So why did I just buy another one. I got nervous on Acquasports, Prolines, and Mako because most had the transom replaced. Who knows why.
I bought another bayliner, never had a problem with the last one.
Oh and did I mention, when you get older you just have to have a portapotti!!!!
I hate getting older.

I have the displeasure of telling you I have suffered every steering issue known to boaters.

Will help, but need details.

At least you know that now, I was on a boat when the cable snapped and it was horrible. Congrats on the boat, that is one of my all time favorite hulls, super-fishable, small enough to tow and launch, big enough to be comforatable outside the bay. What kind of motor?

Fishpart 06-22-2006 08:32 AM

Congratulations..

When will the Boathog lures be coming out???? :hidin:

vineyardblues 06-22-2006 08:49 AM

Eben,
My condolances :rotf3: Now you'll understand the true meaning for boat = Break out another thousand!

MrHunters 06-22-2006 10:34 AM

Don't let them scare you. (smaller boats 19 and under) are relatively cheap to maintain. Initial cost and (if TLC is needed) but hey....Your on the water and nothing beats that.

Hope the motor isnt of the same vintage however ;)

taJon 06-22-2006 10:54 AM

They are nice, a friend of mine has one with a 90 honda and it rides pretty nice. Congrats

ktugboat42 06-22-2006 01:49 PM

Congrats, thats a great hull design. Check out classicmako.com for all your mako needs.

reelecstasy 06-22-2006 02:01 PM

A few years ago. Still runs strong. New paint since. Fun boat that can get into some shallow water.

ThrowingTimber 06-22-2006 03:43 PM

Sweet I'll bring the popcorn, we dump the popcorn and watch the seagulls go nuts, and boats rush the seagulls from the distance, its a howl!!11

well... yes i know boats = $$$ and i dont have much of that laying around these days, but i am going to keep it on a trailer and use it every once in a while. Surfcasting is in my blood and will still do that most of the time.

heres some pics... the engine is a '89 evenrude 115. If i can swing it i will try to pick up a 90 honda 4 stroke- thats all i need i think...

heres some pics of the beast. AS you can see by looking at the console it needs some TLC, but I am only looking at this as a workhorse fishing boat..

no major reason.. only that i fell in love with clammer's and another friends hondas..... they are super quiet. I really dont know much about the 4-stroke market..

what would you throw on the back of a mako 19??

Fishpart 06-23-2006 07:19 AM

Eben, you can get serious with that boat, the Clam Handle on the console is there for a reason//////. I'm sure you'll have her up tight in no time :D..

vineyardblues 06-23-2006 07:28 AM

Yamaha 90 imo.

Little more reliable than the hondas in my experience if maintained.

I just picked up a DF70 Suzuki pushing an 18' bay boat. Absolutly love the motor...Keep thinking it stalls at idle. Filled up two weeks ago (3 trips a week) and the gas needle barely has moved.

The dealership stocks Yamaha/Suzuki/Honda motors so I asked what was the prefered motor you are putting on boats. His response was, "the mechanics love the suzuki's because they are never in the shop for major repairs." I think they push a little less torque than yammi or honda but they are also the best price out of the three. That being said a 90-115 (same block) would suit you just fine AND you can't beat their warranty...(5 years) or three year with some sort of rebate. :bl:

Thats just my experience though... in no way have I earned a respected opinion yet :)

Raven 06-23-2006 11:17 AM

all sounds good

but ya need to talk -> money

taJon 06-23-2006 11:36 AM

hpdi 115 or so any make

RIJIMMY 06-23-2006 02:04 PM

holy crap Nebe! This actually means you can fish in the daylight! I'll be doing the same thing in a year or two! Congrats and good luck with it!

rhodyflyguy 06-23-2006 02:07 PM

115 suzuki 4-stroke, yup.

zacs 06-23-2006 03:56 PM

i had the exact same year/boat up until this winter when I sold her and bought new.

i would reccomend suzuki 140 for a 4 stroke, or if you like spending some serious $$$ a would consider a 2 strok, get the etec 150.

i have a friend with a '69 19' with a yam 90 4 stroke and it could use more power. it is not a light boat...

I know a lot about your boat. would be happy to help whenever you need it, shoot me a PM.

Clammer 06-23-2006 04:09 PM

WTF have I been //

good luck with the rig //but its ganna be a bitch dragging all over them/there rocks you/all crawl on :hidin:

good point. 4 strokes are known for producing less hp then they say they do. look at the 225 yammie, it only produces 205 HP. also they have less torque then comparable 2 strokes

Eben, are you out of your freekin mind? :conf:
