Great Chart, John...
Way to the right side where it says C3 is a good spot to start.
Toss out towards the Green Can Buoy. Work into the Gut between the two Islands.
Then, working towards the West, that front beach is all rocks of different sizes. From Baseball size to Barn size. As you round that point coming toward the old barges the cove right there has a gravelly sand bottom and Mussels. I don't know if there is enough of the Barges left to stand on but they were like "Bass Stands" years ago.
That opening on the chart is not there any more. They filled that beach with old barges full of stones and the sand has built up well.
Still working along towards the West you will notice how the beach turns from Sand to Gravel and then to Stones and then Boulders. I explain to folks to take note as this is how sand is made. The rocks get ground up smaller and smaller till they turn into sand.
Any way, as the Bluff starts to rise, you are now in front of the Cuttyhunk Fishing Club, if the tide is right you may notice the rusty marks on some of the boulders that show where the Bass Stands used to be.
This entire shore clear along the South Side, to the West End and around the corner up towards the Light House and Mussel Bed are the spots where Large come to eat.
Where you see "Foul" on the Chart are spots to work over hard. There are several Coves on that South Side that harbor fish.
On the South West Bluff, or Point as the current starts to run to the South gives up Large.
On the Light House point that area marked Foul has a Mussel Bed that brings fish in to feed. The big Cove to the right as you stand onm that point is the "Wash Pond Bend" as the Sheep used to be "washed" in the fresh water pond up in the far end of the Salt Pond that is behind the beach. Bob Tilton told me that there 'was' a Herring Run there when he was young but the Bass ate all the Herring and there isn't any more there.
That big sandy cove gives up Large sometimes. I know people who have taken fish well over fifty pounds along there.
Well, that is about it for now. Any questions? Post and will try to help. GB Outdoors fishes that beach from the shore so he can tell you the real "Hot Spots". I fished it from the boat as well.

Saltheart 05-16-2002 09:17 AM

Oh man , I can't wait! That will be the second weekend in a row for fishing sat and both Smokey and I will catch $hit from the ladies for that.... but you know....some things are worth it!! :)

Great post Chet. Sounds like maybe you been to that island before? :)

Clammer 05-16-2002 09:54 AM

Saltheart 05-16-2002 09:58 AM

I take it that means you can't make it for that one Clammer! :( That's too bad. Hope we see you the eigth at weekapaug.

JohnR 05-16-2002 09:59 AM

Clammer - may be me too. We'll need a special cushion for you...

Clammer 05-16-2002 11:19 AM

of course I.M interested

Apponaug was descent yesterday afternoon
weekend crowds make both places tough
did you see the weather forecast for Friday/Saturday??????

I,m going to really be p-----off if I don,t get to see the guys on the legs plus Cutty, fishing s good but the time we b/s is extra special

Plus ,what would Jenn do without me?????:

JohnR 05-16-2002 01:02 PM

I was hoping that 1am starts would keep away the crowds. They left last night when the bell rang 11... I hadn't checked the deep night weather but we'll see...

Fishpart 05-16-2002 01:58 PM

Looks good, just might get dumped on...........

Got Stripers 05-16-2002 02:16 PM

It looks mighty fishy :), I'm looking forward to it. I'd like to bring my boat over and be able to cruise the shallows under the moonlight, but not unless I can manage a scouting trip or two. I'd say it's not likely but maybe later during the summer, for next year.

bloocrab 05-16-2002 07:17 PM

The Alert (Ferry) schedule....

Effective: June 15 - June 30

Saturday > Leaves New Bedford at 9 AM

...............> Leaves CuttyHunk at 3 PM

Sunday > Same as above....

....$12.75 for an adult one wat ticket. You'll need (2) one way tickets...because the "Roundtrip" is just that!!..and unless you want to come back the same day....at 3....:smash: ....well, ya know the drill......:)

....Ok, so here are the bloo questions of the day ~ ??? ~

...I tried finding out where the Ferry drops us off..and it appears to be in in the Lagoon (Center of Town) I guess??

#1.~...In realistic terms, how long of a walk (timewise) would it be say..from the "C-3" area to the Boulder area thats close to the SouthWest Corner ???...(without fishing of course)..

#2.~...and tidewise, at which point would it be better to start at ??...

...I imagine starting from the "C-3" area and working my way down to the SouthWest corner and then back up <<>>...is going to be my plan...(unless I run into a school of Large along the way and just wear myself out there...:D:D)..because it only makes sense to end my trip closer to the Ferry area....in case I have to make a run for it because I got into fish at the last minute...:p ...unless of course, its just too lengthy timewise, to start at "C-3" and head to the boulders and make it back in time...then I'll have to head straight down toward the corner...and just slowly work my up toward "C-3"....or I could just....fish off the left side until the right side got shallow enough and then fish off the top until the bottom dropped...or I could just....

...but if GB has some suggestions for me...;) I'm all claws

Goose 05-16-2002 07:22 PM

bloocrab 05-16-2002 07:25 PM

OK.....in all seriousness....

..I would like to start figuring out my game plan....

...so my one and only question is.....(for now ;))

.....HOW LONG OF A WALK IS IT FROM THE "C-3" TIP...TO THE SOUTHWEST CORNER ???.....

...there was no scale on the map, and I figured one of you "mojos" might have trekked that already...:D

TheSpecialist 05-16-2002 07:39 PM

Oh boy I can't wait. Chet that is a wealth of info, thanks for taking the time to write it all out.

Bloo maybe we should make a plan to meet on Sat am, all the guys that are taking the ferry that is, then we can all go together.

Yes, yes,yes;

nor-easter 05-16-2002 09:52 PM

O. K. That pile of rocks is about a mile and three quarters long and a Half mile wide as the Crow flys. (Funny that would come to mind. Never seen a Crow out there)
But the shore is ROCKY and not easy to walk but you guys are beach fishermen and are ,I guess, accustomed to going where it is rough going.
I don't know what you guys will have for communication but if you spread out and search then when somebody gets into them maybe you can signal and get together and work on em.

bloocrab 05-17-2002 06:22 AM

Thanks Chet...:)

.....IT'S DEFINATELY DO-ABLE !!!...;)

...I was thinking about that myself ~ (exchanging cell phone #s with the people that had them)...but since its a contest of sorts...:smash: Nobody'll call ME!!! :laughs:

GREAT IDEA SPECIALIST...I'm game...!!...maybe at the closest coffee shop to the Ferry~;)

JohnR 05-17-2002 08:16 AM

One great item for surf communication is the Motorola Talkabout FRS radios... I'll bring my 3 over but if you have one, bring it...

The most overlooked beauty of those radios is that when you're fishing a fairly crowded stretch of beach and you want to let a select few know that you're on fish and not let the world in on it, just talk via radio. If your flashing your neck light to get their attention, you get every slingin' stick for miles to converge on your spot... The radios are well worth it and are relatively chaep these days...

mikecc 05-17-2002 09:42 AM

I have 3 Motorola FRS radios I can spare. Also have 2 Marine hand heald.

GBOUTDOORS 05-17-2002 01:40 PM

John we are talking Cuttyhunk here you could light a signal fire and no one would come to see whats up:p I do not think we will see to many other shore fishers unless CT> sufcasters are out there this weekend. I have copies of that chart with the roads all marked and most of the good rocks I use to fish. I would start were Chester said and work my way from there to the west end as the tide will be at 12:00 and thats were you want to be at high. The walking is not all that bad yes it is all rocks from the Cuttyhunk club house to the west end but you will be fishing not jogging. One thing I have forgoten to tell all is to bring tick spray they are not on the beach but if you should go up to the road at any point you could pick some up. Does anyone want to go to the Club house on Sat. before we start to fish?? Just a thought it is kind of nice to see the way it was done back then. The ferry dropes you off at the beach area but you can walk to the other end of the island at a slow pace in just and hour or so. I will give out the charts to all that come but will try to post it here tonight if I can get it to work. I know Chester had talked about ferrying some across he runs a ferry service also and could be another way over its called Nor-East charters let me know and I will get the number for you.

JohnR 05-17-2002 02:25 PM

GB - I was talking more about the lights on the beach in general - I whole heartedly agree about not beeing necessary on Cutty but the radios are nice as they allow people to spread out a bit more...

Yes, I would be very interested in checking out The Club. It's an historic place in the pursuit we've all chosen :btu:

TheSpecialist 05-17-2002 03:02 PM

I would be interested in checking out the history as well. Looks like it may be a good time to get those Motorolas I was putting them off.

If any one has the ferry info could they post it please? The wheres, whens, hows, and numbers.

GBOUTDOORS 05-17-2002 04:52 PM

Mike if its ok with you I could pick up the radios or if you can make it we can get them on the island:D The more we have the better it will be. I am sure we will be in small groups of three or four as we fish this would meen about four or five groups. I will need someone to fish with as Bloo won't fish with me anymore:af: :af: something about catching all the fish:smash: :smash:

....GB CHEATS!!!.....He has some kind of "Fish~T00~ishin'"...a way of persuading the fish into grabbing only his lures...:af: :af: ...but I'll be watching....and BELIEVE ME, IF I CATCH YOU CHEATING, I'M TELLING THE STRIPER REFEREES...... ( we are going to have referees there right?? ) ...

did I mention GB's favorite colors....:humpty: :hihi: :bshake: :bshake:................. :hs:

GBOUTDOORS 05-18-2002 07:02 AM

You got to do what you got to do to catch fish:laughs: If that meens pink I'm there only thing is Jane gets mad at me when I bring back her favorite outfit smelling like stripers. I think the pink makes me look like a big squid thats how I can get so close to all those big fish with out spooking them like Bloo does:smash: By the way I have a special map of the island for you Bloo with all the best spots:confused:

Got Stripers 05-18-2002 10:15 AM

Greg, in addition to the tick spray, maybe a short must have list for those that haven't been out there. I don't own korkers, I'm I in trouble? I also only own neoprene waders, since my wading has before now been limited to cold water periods, am I going to be sweating my arse off all night? What's a reasonable pair of stocking foot or breathable waders run? Or would I be ok getting a cheep set of hip boats for this trip?

GBOUTDOORS 05-18-2002 03:01 PM

Bob I only have neoprene waders and plan on using them. It does get cold on the island in June at night and you should be ok with them. As far as korkers go I do not have a pair and think they would be nice to own but for the amount of shore fishing I do they would not be worth buying. But for all that have them it would be a very good idea to bring them. We will be fishing the shore very slowly as not to miss a single rock so working up a swet should not be a problem.( only when fighting the big one) All of my fishing from shore was done without waders but then I was 18yrs younger and the water was not as cold;) There are two ways to get to the west end the long way from Canapitsit on the east shore and working your way along the south shore to the pigs or a short walk from the house to the west beach and down the west shore to the Gosnel tower area. If you were to start at Canapitsit say at four you could fish your way to the west end by 12:00 midnight and be there for the best tide. I think this is what most will want to do but for anyone that just wants to hit the west end at the best tide you could go the other way and leave much later and still work the west shore to the pigs by 12:00.

mikecc 05-18-2002 07:45 PM

GB I will bring the radios to the shop in the next week or so. I can't make the trip with the shop open.
Thought I might be able to talk da wife into running the shop that weekend and letting me go ,it being my birthday in all. :D
It did not work :(

Slipknot 05-18-2002 09:35 PM

Mike, keep trying bubba. You must have a full cookie jar with the addition and all. We'd love to fish with ya there. :D
I'll put in a good word, come on it's ya birthday! One overnight trip ain't gonna be so bad on her, besides maybe your dad can help out too.

G.B. that sounds like a plan to me :)

I got secret weapons planned, I just pray that I can go too.

nor-easter 05-18-2002 10:03 PM

GBOutdoors!
Best you go for a walk and check your intended path down to the West Side and along the shore to the end of the Island.
If you are planning on walking the Wash Pond Bend I heard that Seth had a big excavator in and cleaned the opening to the West End Pond.
I don't know how wide or deep it is but it deserves checking if you are intending to cross there.
I hear tell the ROAD to the West End is off limits now thanks to one of the young Spaulding's wives. Snobby off Islanders!
That road has been there for over 60 years and now Snobby says it's Private Property!
It would be deserving of them if Lightening were to strike and the Fire Truck got stuck in a mud hole cause they are not maintaining the Private Road!

Anyway, check out the above so you guy's don't end up having to swim across the Pond opening!

AnthonyN 05-19-2002 02:31 AM

Ill meet up with you guys in the AM for the ferry trip :)

I have a cell phone so that will be my main means of communication on the island with others who have cell's. I use cingular with mobile to mobile so all calls wit6h otyher cingular users are free :) if not I don't mind paying the money for calls on cuttyhunk!!!!!!!!! :D :D

Wait!!!!!!!!!!!! Its the weekend so calls are free anyway!!!!!!! Bring the cellys!

GBOUTDOORS 05-19-2002 06:36 AM

Chet thanks for the heads up on the pond. I knew that Spaldings kids had shut down the road but did not know about the pond opening. I will be heading out this week some night and will check it out. Hey Goose you up for a boat ride to Cuttyhunk and some plugging Tue. or Wed. night????? Chet there are no fish on that road anyway but would be nice to come back on if the pond opening is to deep to cross.

Story in todays New Bedford Standard-Times

GBOUTDOORS 05-21-2002 06:49 AM

If you look at the top picture that is the water tower to the left the opening in the wall just before it is some land we own that I use to camp on in the summer and use as my fishing base. It is a buildable lot that if we did put a house on it you would have a full 360 deg view. Anyone want to pitch a tent???? Chet you must know the spot this was Joe's land I put the opening in the wall back in 71 the last time I camped there. The water tower would be filled each morning till it overflowed thats when I would get out the soap and shampoo for my shower:D :D unless I was fishing which was the case most of the time. I was sixteen the last summer I camped here after that I found the house and my aunts cooking a far better way to stay on the island.

Got Stripers 05-21-2002 07:14 AM

What is the official date? Where are we meeting to make the ride over and what's the story on the return trip. Can I assume the boat runs only until a certain time and once there, you are there for the night? Is this heavy tackle stuff, or can I plan on bringing my usual gear. Do I need waders and if so I'm I going to sweat my arse off in neoprenes? Does it make more sense to try to get hip boats or lightweights?

-Tick spray

Maybe a complete list?

GBOUTDOORS 05-21-2002 07:40 AM

Bob the date is June 15th the ferry goes over at 9:00 am and gets to the island at 10:00 or so. A one way trip is $12.75 we will have a cookout at 11:00 and start to fish after that. Some may want to go to the Cuttyhunk Fishing club to see the way it use to be done and I will walk over with anyone that wishes to. You should bring a surf stick and plugs:eek: a back pack for soda and snacks and your waders should be fine I use neopren and find they are fine. The boat makes one trip most days but I will find out if there will be two on the 15th, it comes back to NB at 3:00. The tide will be high at 12:23 am on the 16th so fishing should be good all night long then we can all get together say 10:00 or before for some breakfast and see how everyone did. Then its off to the ferry at 2:00 and back to NB at 3:00 on the 16th.

chris L 05-21-2002 10:31 AM

Mike
keep trying to get your wife to watch the shop with all the aggravation of your house and shop and its your birthday . Id say if anyone needs a break its you !

You guys will do well. I have no doubt whatsoever. I am sorry I can't join ya. I will be there in the fall.

The barges are an easy spot ( there is something left to stand on but not much) and the channel is also very productive.

IMO don't overlook the northeast corner...on your chart where is says "whale rock". From the sandy beach, walk east thru the rocks till you see a gazabo...fish that cove. For me, the large haps and yozuri mag plugs clean up in that cove every night I fished it last fall.

Also, you got to work the entire beach along the southwest side around to the point.

Expect to do a lot of hiking.

You may want to consider the following:

A) A backpack
B) breathable waders
C) quality hiking boods
D) Cell phone (the vineyard towers are reachable and a saftey whistle (incase you break you leg)
E) a ATV or better yet a Helecopter with infrared cameras and sonobouys for finding fish.

BTW, the place is dry...byo

here are 2 pics I took last sept. the barges and a typical cove on the sw side.

have fun and I look forward to reading and seeing some Large results.....
