What Is Your Biggest Bluefish?
 

I caught one over Cuttyhunk that went 16 pounds 15 ounces!:eek5: It fought like a big bass....being still on the dark side of dawn I almost lipped the thing until I caught a look at the profile of the head! Lucky cause' the thumb was ready to slide over the lip!!!!:rolleyes: Biggest bluefish I have ever caught or seen! Only 35 1/2 inches long, 21 inch girth....it looked like a tuna! Kind of a milestone for me...I always wanted a 15 pounder on my own wood! Nice when you set a goal and you reach it....time to work on the 40, 50 and 60 pound bass!:laugha:

dang thing looked like a tuna! fattest blue i've ever seen.

13 pounds I thought it was bigger but scales don't lie.

Boat caught, on an umbrella rig, doesn't count. :doh:

I can't imagine a blue over 20 pounds!!! The Ma. state record is 28 and that must have been a hell of a fish!!! 23 pounds must have been a frightening sight coming over the side?

yes, but it was approx 23 years ago and the plug was an Atom.
Caught in Plymouth. Not a really big deal as there were a lot of them around back then when you could hardily buy a Striper

I know you guys down in Jersey see large blues all the time what with all the big bunker down there! Occasionally we will get a run of blues to 20 pounds but not often....I missed a school of 20's blitzing the Race 2 seasons ago by a tide!!!! :(

That was back in my white bucket days. Didn't own a surfbag so had V notches cut in the top of a bucket to keep the lures seperated.

18# on a 2 ounce Kastmaster middle of the day, one of them non stop backside blufish blitzes.. all big blues, we lost count how many we took.. there were bigger ones caught by others..all on tin.
what a mess.. one chatham guy had us saving them.. we had a fillet party and he took them to the smokehouse.. i pity the camp owner whose porch we messed up.. his buddy said, when asked how we gonna clean this place.. "Oh.. it will prolly rain sometime before the weekend".. it didn't.. :yak6:

we used to get these just about every morning on the beach this time of year.. "breakfast blues".. this is my son about 5 years ago early one AM..

Two years ago we were catching lots of 12-14lb blues in a slot off of Chatham on 9 & 10 wt fly rods and 7-8 spinning rods, so that is my biggest. We would dump the fast sinking lines over the side of the boat, or drop a 1.5 oz jig with a pork trailer and hope that we got past the dogfish. We would slowly strip in the fly line, or work the jig slowly up and bam. Big sand eel imitations were the ticket for the fly rod. They fight very well and were a blast.

About 10 yrs ago a friend of mine landed a 38" bluefish on his 9wt - the thing was a monster, and what a fight from the Falmouth jetty he was on. He tailed it and we just sat there looking at it in amazement. No scale, or Boga then - he took the girth and length and revived it and let it go. It was like a whole size class larger than anything I have seen since.

Tad over 18 lbs and 38" on the back side of %$%$%$%$ in the middle of July.
On a plug. 12 lb test. I've had a 16 on a flyrod too. That is a nice size fish.

I am in the eternal quest for the 20 lb bloofish. Someday in my lifetime. All those big one's are gone. Catching a 20 lb to me is the bloofish equivalent nowadays to catching a 70 lb striper.

Can't beat the fight of a gator blue. Them suckers pull hard.

I've caught numerous 12 - 14 lb fish on 10-12 mono in the old days . These were caught on my 6 ft shimano fightin rod and the worst reel Penn ever made the 240 GR. A nice way to spend 20 minutes fighting a bluefish. I use a lot of braid now but still use that same rod and reel. Reel needs a lot of tlc though.

Lots somewhere between 17 and 20.
Never scaled one.
Us Bombas used to get some bigguns on the East Side of the block (from a boat).

A big bluefish from the beach is a different beast altogether than one in deep water. Great fighting fish when they can't go down and dog it. My best from shore is 17.5 lbs. It fought as hard as any 40 lb bass I've caught (although it's getting hard to remember many of those).

I have no idea. I don't keep bluefish unless I'm in a tournament. I know I caught one once in Fire Island inlet, on LI, that had to go over 20 lbs. You know you have a big blue when they get that bulldog head, like a male mahi.

Biggest I ever weighed into the MV Derby was around 17 lbs. It won a daily but not the Grand. That was the year Lori Vandelaske caught one almost 19 on a fly rod.

One year, the day after the Derby ended, there was an all afternoon blitz off East Beach. Almost ever fish was in the teens. I released every one of them. I had two that pulled my Manley hand scale almost to the 19# mark. I was using a big 3M S-glass Lami, and couldn't move either of those fish until they wanted to be moved. No 40# bass ever locked up that rod like that :eek:

23# 3 oz on a blue creek chub striper strike in Plum Gut on the surface but it was in the late 70's.
While that sounds impressive, everyone on board got fish in the 20# class that week.
The biggest this year is about 10# on a chunk meant for a striper. I saw a 14#er a few days ago and it looked very mean and had a very thick body. The bigones are commin back...

I think my biggest is 15#. It was a full moon I could have sworn I seen stripes as the fish got between two big rocks it got tossed around it white water and I was about to lip it....something told me not too at the last minute. :eek5:

22 pounds, but this was more than 25 years ago when I was in junior high and high school, when the bunker in Western Long Island Sound were thick as molasses, we'd get blitzes of fish that were crazy - many times filled the boat with fish from 18-22 pounds on plugs -- pencils, wind cheaters, goo-goo eyes -- metal -- big krockodile spoons -- swimmers -- big rapalas -- and bunker.

It was the type of blitz that would last for hours on end, where all the boats would be overloaded with blues, fish chasing bait onto the beach, you'd get home and your clothes would be caked with bunker blood and scales, bluefish blood and scales ... it was awesome and a real blood bath. We ate bluefish three to four times a week, as my poor mother had a freezer full of fish that she never really liked but probably didn't want to upset her son who was so proud of his catch.

When your 13-17, you don't really care and it's awesome. There was always the occassional 30 pound bass that was hanging around and ate someones chunk.

18 pounds. I saw a 23 pounder caught at the canal had to be 18 years ago. A friend of mine took a 25 lber on a charter out of Plymouth 25 years ago. He wasn't even a fisherman, thought it was no big deal. P.

14lbs. 7oz. won the pool on a party boat. Diamond jig, 8oz. Googan with a 7 pounder insisted his was bigger.:whackin: Google images "World record Bluefish" and get a load of the 31 pounder. I'd do it for you, but my right clicker is on the fritz.

I got a 9 pounder on my fly rod this July in Truro the bay side. I was into the backing in a second. first time for that

Took em to 20 lbs. at the Hill about 12 years ago, A few here were in on that....................

I had a couple 20 pounders from the boat in the Weweantic under pogie schools, 1976. My biggest canal blue was 18 pounds.

18.50#'s, 3 weeks ago in the West Passage. The freaking fish would not let go of the BogaGrip. It just kept chomping on it. His eyes followed my hand like the Mona Lisa.

If bluefish grew to 100#'s I would move to Wyoming and fish for trout. They are nasty critters. I have 10 fillets in the smoker as I write this post. Smoked bluefish is yummy. Having a party next week, smoked bluefish pate and fillet will go very well w/my new batch of Hoppy Ale.

I made bluefish chowder the other day. 2 cans of canned sweet potatos, canned carrots, fried onions in a half stick of butter, water, a little pepper and whole milk. Put in 4 filets from a couple 7 pounders. Cut the read meat out (always). Came out good and tasty.

23.75lbs. Old Man Shoal Spetember new moon 1981 with Bobby Perimian on his "Foolish Pleasure" 32 Fortier. Wire with a Gibbs GTS-3 Blue Mackerel Swimmer.

October 1983 (the same night the Marines in Lebanon got hit. Dave Kosweski, myself, Pete Trainor and Steve Brito. Race Point, Loaded 7 inch Redfins, 16lb Ande Tournament Green line on spinning wrapped Lami GLB-108-1Ms'. I had 5 between 17 and 19 pounds, Pete had 7 over 17 to 20 pounds and Steve had a similar number, Prize went to Ski who hauled in a 22 pounder. If we had known enough to have it entered into the IGFA for a record he would still hold the record for 16lb test Bluefish. All surf caught all on loaded Redfins.

Biggest Bluefish I ever saw was one night in 74' when working for Capt. Lucky Singleton on the Sea-Witch, mate from the Piranha, tied up next to us, woke me up in the wee hours to see it. It was caught on a night trip off of the path in Truro in CC Bay. 25.8oz. It was a monster.
