Trick Question for SpammmBots

As we have seen the past few months there has been a noticable uptick in SpamBots registering and then spamming S-B. I literally spend a lot of time going through and checking accounts to see if they are automated spammers. I find the vast majority of these are in Russia, China, Phillipines, any of the *Stans, and several Eastern European countries. The processes are automated now that some can even decipher the pain in the butt image people use to register onto S-B and some have a "man in the loop" that verifies the images for the spambots.

I have found a new tool that allows us to ask a question fo anyone registering and that person gets the answer correct it will allow them to register a new account. So if the question was "What is 2 + 2 ?" the person would answer 4 (OK, maybe the spammers will get that right too).

So I am looking for some questions and answers (family friendly :hihi: ) that we can present to our future S-B members, so that the next BigFish  :hee:, RaiderRon, or Clammer can figure it out but the next Anatoly Russka might have a problerm or two...

Like "Early Bird gets the" ???? Something fishing and northeast fishing related that would not exclude other legitimate interested members from signing up.

I hope to have this up and runnig shortly... Thanks!

John

I thought of that too, but then you go up the top of the page and there is a picture of one with striped-bass logo and the flag behind it..

Jimbo 11-06-2006 01:17 PM

I thought it depended on if it's a hybrid or not, but I think the answer you're looking for would be the number of stripes is equal to the number of days in half a fortnight.

Sometime after you were born but before I was born :bshake: some scientist changed the genus (I think is the right word) from Roccus to Marone

Canalman 11-06-2006 01:56 PM

Marone is the current name...

7 stripes

Canalman 11-06-2006 01:56 PM

or 14 if you count both sides :hihi:

Questions need to give any legit fisherman the oportuntiy to join so don't make it too US centric - I've been here 11 years and would struggle with one or two of those :rollem:

If you were looking for something automated, a multiple choice approach might work:

i) How many States in the USA? a) 44, b) 48, c) 50, d) 66
ii) Which has the biggest population? - a) Scotland, b) England, c) Wales
iii) Fly is to Flyrod as Plug is to - a) Lathe, b) Reel, c) Spinrod
The more questions, the less chance of an automated spammer getting a "pass mark".

Canalman 11-06-2006 02:30 PM

What other fish do you catch other than striped bass?

"uffah!!" 11-06-2006 03:09 PM

Raven 11-06-2006 05:04 PM

i always asked the question: yes?

and a bot couldnt solve it ,,,,,,,,,,,,ever!

where in the ocean do striped bass lay their eggs?

JohnR 11-06-2006 05:18 PM

Figuring in that a handfull of the people who join (and still remain :bshake: ) probably couldn't state why the striped bass is so named we should probably go with something a little easier that an english speaker would be able to figure out, prefferably an english speaker from this side of the pond. Not to exclude those from the other side of the pond but we do get very few of those and some have been from spammed .UK addresses (co-opted machines or email addys I think).

I figure 3 or 4 random questions with one of them being asked at registration time would be sufficient.
