What sets your heart pounding

For me, during the day its that instant when you've finished your retrieve and are pulling that plug out of the water and a large fish explodes on it. During the night, its the pull of a large fish on that first run.

Rockport24 02-04-2007 10:44 AM

for me it's always the hook up, when you first feel the weight of the fish, big or small, it's always a good feeling to know you got one!!
then if it's heavy, things just go into overdrive!

LIVE-LINING..................:beat:

basswipe 02-04-2007 11:05 AM

When a truly large fish makes a big run and you're completely under-gunned for the task at hand and all you can say to yourself is "please...please...please".

That exploding fish as you pull the plug out of the water does it to me also.

chris L 02-04-2007 11:14 AM

what gets my heart pounding ? has absolutly nothing to do with fishing.

Oh honey !!

luds 02-04-2007 11:25 AM

When I'm fishing alone and hook into a good fish in the rocks and it gives a big tail slap. Love that.:humpty:

Oh. I've been know to get excited when plugs first go up on-line. Ryan Smith dannies being one example. My motor will be running when BM Dannies finally hit the market too.

Mine gets going when I am fishing alone in fog and I am standing out on a rock and I get a haunted feeling like a ghost is in my presents, I get this feeling every time I am fishing a certain hole on Block Island.
I figure there must have been a ship wreck where some must have died?

Whales and Sharks passing underneath the kayak and giving off a slight vibration or water trail effect like the Russian Sub in the movie Hunt For Red October. Not only does my heart race but I usually mess my pants.

When I'm wading hip deep in the canal at a certain pole, about 3am and "something" bumps my leg.

Or when you've been jigging all night with no bumps, you're half in a daze and get nailed.

Goose 02-04-2007 12:28 PM

You know your alive when...

When I go all in on a bluff holding nothin.

Going across 10 miles in a dark night by myself.

Head shakes & long runs

Haveing a big bass real close and knowing those last few feet are crucial.

Swimming 25 yrds and not touching bottem...then getting back.

Pitch black through the woods to and from my treestand.

Seeing a big buck, haveing deer stare you down...seems like forever.

Jumping a crashing deer only yrds away....check your pants.

50 pogies flappin around the deck.

Seeing pogies being blown up by bass.

Feeling a bait fish tremble in fear from big bass.

snake slinger 02-04-2007 12:33 PM

thump a big bass just inhaled my eel

fishing by myself in a new spot that i think will hold fish - one where the water is tubulent with plenty of whitewater...fishing it for a few casts until doubt creeps in my mind...and i get a bit lulled by the action of my plug...and then WHAM - a big tail slap at my plug without a hook-up...that usually sets the stage for some focused fishing and some heart pounding fun...

BW from AZ 02-04-2007 05:53 PM

Riding in RJ's boat on the way to or from. HE gets a grin when the boat dances on its tail and i'm holding on for dear life. When live lining I get strated when little fishie gets nervous, tail slapped puts it in overdrive, bustes out of my chest when the reel screams. set the hook and start breathing again. I can relive it in my head and it does it all over again.

Fishing from The Kayak in close around the reefs in the darkness and seeing the white top of a set wave closing in and feathering about 10 yards outside where I am. Grabbing the Paddle dropping the rod in the holder and saying "please god". That gets the adrenaline going like nothing else.

Also reeling the last few feet in with a 9'' Sluggo and just before lifting it out of the water a big bass blows up on it. Its like someone threw a 30 lb dog in the water. Better than coffee!

Definitely large breaking fish surrounding the boat..

Or a real LARGE boil behind a plug. That's probably the best...the anticipation of the strike.

As mush as I like fishing alone I still prefer when a good buddy and me are kicking ass. Nothing beats being in the middle of a blitz and getting doubles every cast and having a little tourney to see who can get the most.

Hey Raven, what was the guy shooting at with the Thompson submachine gun?

Swimmer 02-05-2007 12:03 PM

All kidding aside with the girl answers I gave previously thier have been three times when I was startled, heart pounded, while fishing. First time was when fishing a jetty just before dawn when a huge bluefish hit a Spoffords Ballistic Missile that was splashing across the surface. Landed that one. Second time while fishing a pier not far from where the first time occured I was fishing a very heavy, 5m 10" rod using mucho bait on a # 10 stainless mustad, when something took the bait and I couldn't turn the fish with 40# test line. I was either going to loose the rod or cut the line, I cut the line after about 15 minutes of holding on for dear life in a gale with the dock swaying back and forth in the wiind. Third time while fishing on the south side of the vineyard one morning looking for albies when a fish hit my deadly #^&#^&#^&#^& and when it did a splash happened like a boulder dropped from the sky. Just as I was starting to loosen the drag the fish straightened the hook and that was it.

One more thing, I am startled everytime a rat as big as a cat runs across my footwear when fishing.

FishermanTim 02-05-2007 12:14 PM

Fishing on the Powderpoint Bridge and having a big'un break the surface to hit the Storm Shad I was just pulling out of the water.
This happens at least once EVERY year. I laugh afterwards, :jump1: because it's usually when I've gotten relaxed, and let my guard down.
Having the fish jerk the rod back like that always gets me going.

Same bridge alone late on a moonless foggy night, having the feeleing that I could turn around at any second and have some apparition (ghost) right in front of me. When the hairs stand up on the back of my neck, I just change locations.
