What do you use

Spro swivels and breakaway clips! The swivels are 230 pound #2 and the Breakaway's are 80 pound!

None...all tied direct..can get away with that on coventional gear...

I know Bill that is what is great about conventional

Where's the "None" choice. More terminal tackle=more chance for failure... Line-leader Leader-Hook..Done. Trust ur knots. Never had a failure that way..Swivels break and Snaps open up..No need IMO.

I use the bigger Kroks. I like having a big swivel to aim for when I reach for the leader to guide a fish onto the rocks.

The bigger Breakaway clip on the other end for jigs.

Plugs--either a Coastlock 34 or tie direct.

If I'm free drifting chunks, I use a swivel even with conventional. In current, the chunk will "helicopter" and not drift naturally if you don't use a swivel.

Mike, what size Breakaway do you use for the Jigs? I can't seem to squeeze them on the 80lb. ones

They're best used on jigs that have the thin brass hook eye, like the old Ku-Jig Canal special type. Sometimes, certain brands of the Smilin' Bill heads have a very thick eye that makes using any kind of snap hard. If I have to use a jig like that, I tie direct with a loop knot.

Don't be misled by the thin appearance of those clips. I know guys who put incredible pressure on fish into the 40s in that honking current, and who have total confidence in that thing. I used them for the first time last season, all year, and they're still batting 1.000. No failures, not even a hint of damage.

Myself, I love them. I do use the Smilin Bill's and the eye is very thick. I end up just tying direct.

Been using the breakaway 50's plugging quite a while now .. Never failed me yet on a fish or lost a plug . I like the quick ,,no hassle changing of plugs ,. I think some are tieing them on and using them backwards . I've had brand new hooks open up on fish ,,,clips are good .

I agree with you Tagger....I think folks tie those Breakaways on backwards....I have almost done it myself a time or two! Its easy to do because unless you are paying 100% attention...both ends look almost alike! I also think if you are seeing alot of action, on occasion those Breakaways can turn around on you with the line sliding from one end to the other....so you have to check them once in awhile. I have never had a problem with them! I frequently change my offering and feel its alot safer than tying a new knot as often as I would have to....now there is where you increase your chances for failure in my opinion.....tie more knots and eventually one may let you down. Just my .02 cents.

i like 90# rosco snap swivels with the swivel cut off ( so its just a snap) and 100# rosco swivels

Larry hit it right on the head. I use breakaway clips only and have never had one fail me. Ease of changing is always important when you have bad hands. I cannot open a snap due to arthrius and the breakaway is fine. The only time I use a swivel is when the jig is acting strange like coptering, or if I tie a fluro leader to my mono leader. Oh - I only fish conventional.

I use the Spro #4 and Rosco coastlock. I have not used the breakaway connecters yet. I think I will be placing an order tonight based on the comments above.

Breakaways make rubber shad swim funny, or so I've been told and seen. Otherwise, they're fine. I trust them more than I do my knots. I can't get them on my creek chub, though, the eye is too far indented.

Hmmm...I have been tying them on for years like that. The Breakaway guy showed me. He must be wrong too! Well, since I am used to it and have never had one loose a fish for me might as well just keep doing it wrong.:hf1: :laughs: :bl:

(The problem I have found with the smaller spro swivels is the knot tied onto the swivel is always the weak point. I ran some pull tests & it seems the thin gauge of the wire used on the smaller swivels cut the line. The line was practically folded over on itself & the wire acted as a knife edge.)

The swivels on all my leaders are Spro #4 130#. Small and plenty strong for leaders, I can see Mike's point of a larger swivel as far as size to make it easier and safer to handle the leader when landing fish but not necessary for strength. The leader is acting as a shock absorber and reducing the tourque exerted there. However in a plug I want a stronger swivel like the HD Kroks or Rosco, that's where it's necessary. For clips I like the 50# Breakaways for schoolies and holdovers when I use lighter test leaders and the 80# with heavier leaders from about the third week in May into December. Knots on both ends are polomars.

Up until last season it was always mono-to-mono/flouro for my leaders ... not usually a problem, unless I got lazy and did not retie or check my knots ... you need to do that with swivels and breakaway clips any way, as your knots can become strained after a day's fishing/or even several fish ... always check your notes after catching fish, leaders as well for nicks, etc. ... that's how I have lost fish in the past when using leaders ...

Now use the 80 breakaways with 130 or 200 spros,

always used swivels and snaps and always will,,, cross-lock snaps NEVER FAIL,,, i use all different sizes surf usually 50lb plenty big enough

no matter if you trust your knots or not ( you better ) you better tie them well cause clip or not you need a knot to tie the snap to your line . or maybe Im missing something or are we are talking about a hangmans knot . I use breakaway 80# and duo locks . I use them on spinning and occasionally on conv . Mostly I tie direct when fishing conv.

This is totally my way and yours may differ some or completely .

I like to use #35 coast locks with pencils..
#34 for plugs.
breakaways for jigs..
I don't trust the breakaways for plugs anything that goes on that easy can come off just as easy.There have been some istance's where they have done that..Thats enough for me i don't need to experience the horror story for myself..

thats what I'm saying ... been like 4 yrs. using them ..0 problems .. Thats why I said Numbskull might be tieing them on backwards .. Hooks bend and fish are dropped .. never the clip .. not once .

many big bass many 40+ bass and a few over 45lbs not one problem with breakaway, i use to wear out the berkley crosslocks and they would open up on me, plus i wore out barrel swivels untill i went to spo , I like how fast I can swap out plugs also
