Cuttin' Back on Fishing b/c of Gas Prices?
Time for the annual gasoline-fishing poll.
Just thought I'd ask. Last year most of you said your fishing wouldn't change. I know mine did and will be. No more overnight commando raids to the Cape for me for a while. :bsod: |
Me too, I will spend more time in local waters in the kayak!
|
If we go over 5 a gallon, I wont drop but I'll cutdown on maine weekend raids.
|
i think i know how victor voted. i'm jealous, need a biz partner? :devil2: :buds:
|
Nope!
You are dead a long time......I plan on fishing with "ZERO" restriction......gall dern government ain't a keepin' me from fishin' as I wish! |
Definitely going to have to cut back a bit – hopefully not in amount of time spent fishing but I will make some changes in the ways I’m fishing.
More surf casting and yak trips less time out on the boat. When I am on the boat I’ll probably do less running around and fish spots closer to the launch. Might also try and find some fishing partners to share expenses… Thankfully the stripers are in the rivers now and I can walk to spots to catch them. By June I’ll be driving 200 miles (round trip) to fish |
I'm not really a pimp....more of a 'love broker.'
No cutting back here.:rotf2: |
Not changing the way I fish because of the gas prices. In the broad scheme of things 2- gas per gallon versus 3- gallon is only 25- a person on 50 gallons for all day fun. Bronko I am definitely taking the boat out Saturday.
|
Were not cutting back at all. All our boats are very fuel efficient. We could do an overnight canyon trip from falmouth for $100 in gas.:heybaby:
|
Probably won't cut back on the amount of time I fish, but I will not be fishing the distant spots as much as I usually do. I took a couple of offshore trips last year with my wife and 3 kids, ( no splitting a fuel bill there), not sure that will be in the budget this year.
|
I've already instructed the Kids to stop growing, take up gardening and become fluent in the Distillation Process.
We all have our Priorities :hee: |
Let me know how that stop growing thing is working, the only bill higher that my fuel bill is the groceries !!
|
yeah, not too many road trips for me.... now that I live closer to the water I will be getting to know my local spots VERY well.

:call: After you study our new playing field.:spidey: |
No open flames allowed in my laboratory........
I fish so infrequently now if I cut back I wouldn't be allowed to look at a fishing rod...........:wall: |
No change for me...
I live about 1 hour from the coast... But I drive a POS Honda CRX... 40 MPG BABY!!! (as long as it keep running).
|
If it gets too bad, I'll just stick to the east end and not fish the west end as much :hihi: :rotfl:
|
Not an issue for me. I live 5-10minutes away from many good shore spots and this year I have a small 16' skiff with a 15hp 4 stroke that will actually add to my fishing budget. So I should be fishing more than ever this year!
|
I got to admit the costs have curtailed my trips. Filling up the truck and the boat rids $100 plus from the coffers. Last year did many shore dunks, but it's not the same as tossing stuff toward the rocks.

Too funny Ben, you ever read "trick baby" by Iceberg Slim ? |
I of course chose the crack head pimp, cause someday I will have a fleet of diry oars full of crack. But as it stands I don't fish enough now cause time is short, so no my fishing will not be slowed by gas prices.

Victor,
I haven't read that book but I've been doing some due diligence on a publicly-traded brothel in Australia. High-margin businesss (gross margin is 50%) and very strong cash flows in spite of few depreciable assets. Recurring revenue base (it's a service business). It would be perfect were it not for the limited per-customer service capacity. This is not really a scalable business, nor can it be really global, given all these silly regulations that differ by country. Of course, collective bargaining by employees is always a downside risk. :tooth: Unfortunately, this is a discretionary spending category for the consumer. All else equal, high petrol prices means fewer, um, "transactions." |
Great poll questions this year Bassturbed. We needed some brevity.
|
I will, but will focus on going when the tide and time are optimal. Look at my records, see the moon stages and then determine, with what little experience I have as to when the best "window of opportunity" is, then go.
|
Good post:
I didn't post b/c I think what is missing is the idea of cutting back of drving longer distances to go fishing, but not necessarliy cutting back on fishing generally. |
Now - am I cutting back more than last year? Probably not - besides - I have a 6 year old fishing partner to get out more often :)
|
I live 108 miles from the salt and wont cut down on my trips. I will be bitter when i fill up but thats about it. Its an addiction.
|
It wont cut into my fishing time....I'll just stay local....a few cape trips prolly though..
|
Hey Slingah.....truck pool to the Cape.....you in? Seals will probably save us thousands in gas like last year!!:wiggle:

im not spending 300 bucks a month on a boat payment to fish LESS!
plus because i pay 300 bucks a month on a new boat my gas payment is way less... burning on average under 1-2 gallon an hr is A O KAY with me. |
not gonna let those fat oil peckerheads affect my fishing!
|
i live close to the water, so theres no way i'll be cutting back.. hopefully be getting out more then i did last year :)
|
I cut back last year due to family issues.. probaby stay the same this year... plus i have to pour alot of plastic these days :uhoh:
|
I'm back in a car this year, 16 mpg in a truck just gets old when the fishing is good and I'm going every day. Roof rack is on and I'm ready to go.
Obviously a truck or SUV is the ideal fishing vehicle (or necessary, if you like the sand), but I'll still be fishing and traveling to where the fish are when I otherwise would have been looking at a gas pump in fear. I'll be fishing as hard this year as I did last year, and keeping more money in my pocket. Hopefully Newport will produce better all season long and I won't have to travel as much this year. :kewl: |
Pete u told me u get a Vertigo type symptoms when u leave the Island..
:D I would be really happy to get 16 mpg.. I start to save my pennies now For the trips I hope to make this yr.Gas is by far my biggest expense.I already shower in a sink at the DD.Not sure I could do much more to cut back..Maybe if I make a dozen or so Peanut butter sangwiches I can save a few duckets that way.I will have to choose/pick my times more carefully. Also I plan on quitting that $12 per day habit..Thats will be a big help.. |
No food , no lights , no TV but plenty of dough for gas to go fishing!! :)
|
I'll live on water and peanut butter and jelly, but I'm going fishing:)
|
high gas prices effects everything
food especially....used to be, you could go spend 20 bucks and have food for three days.... now its down to one.
fishing.... It takes careful planning ..so there are NO wasted trips. 60 miles from the water sucks...:( http://www.cnn.com/video/player/play...explosion.wchs |
