Estimated my fuel costs for the season...
Even with my reduced usage I expect to spend about 6K+ on gas this season. I guess it is not that bad but the sticker shock at the pump sure sucks.
May not put the pots in this year...just too much expense |
how many gallons is your tank?
|
Do you fill up in the harbor or at the pumps? Over there it doesn't really matter much. The price separates the men from the boys.
|
I thinking about 2400 myself including trailering fuel mileage
|
I hold 135 and it lasts me about 2 weeks of puttering around give or take. (no long distance runs)
Gas the same here at the dock or at the street. About half the time I gas up at Famouth dock which is about the same as here but the fuel is better. I figure I will use the boat less this year and not run as far which is very disappointing because that is half the fun for me...getting to know distant spots better. Trailering too much of a pain and it will get more and more ugly at the ramps as more and more people do it. Cape Cod boating is going to take a serious blow this season. I heard from a friend from New Bedford...boat came in with a load fish ( I think he said 28,000#) ...after refueling, crew made zero and capt lost 4K. How much longer do you think that will go on for? Time to drill in Alaska. This is :bs: |
Man, its getting bad! My fear is its gonna get alot worse!!! I don't see this misery turning around for at least 2 years or more....if it does at all! Its got me worried so bad I am saving soda cans now!?!?!

it drives me crazy when i hear someone say. "oh gas is only $3.10, that's cheap!" That's NOT CHEAP that's just less expensive than $3.50!! the bounce in prices fools people into thinking when they lower 25 cents that its cheap again. :deadhorse: |
by your calculations i will be at around $1700 doing the same type of fishing.

Everyday they drill new small oil wells in Texas, this doesn't change the price. They just drill because the price is so good. If the price dropped to $50 a barrel they would shutdown allot of wells for they aren't profitable enough. |
Quote:
One thing it is doing is making them drill deeper, less profitable wells, because right now they are profitable. Recently the soon to retire Shell president, when asked about Alaska, said 'Screw ANWAR, we want to drill offshore on the North Slope' That is a decent enough source, but I think the choke point still lies at the refinery. Right now they can drill it, they can't refine it... |
"Everyday they drill new small oil wells in Texas" never mind small wells, i'm sitting on a field in the Gulf of Mexico that is estimated at 1 BILLION barrels!!! Thats one field out of many out here.
|
I couldn't afford to run anything more than 15hp right now. As much as I would love a bigger center console i just ccouldn't afford the added expense. I can get around Dux Bay on my 16' skiff and still have a blast.. Oh well, I don't see any end in the near future to this crisis.
|
I have no idea what I am going to use?? I have a 23 footer this year with a 225 hp on it, for the last 10 years I had a 20 footer with 175 hp, I am guessing I will not use much more then I have on the oter boat.
But I moved last year and now live in Wareham, its 25 miles to Falmouth by truck, and 10 miles by water to were I want to fish. then 23 miles to sell fish in New Bedford. I am thinking to use the Fairhaven ramps, its the same 23 or so miles to the ramp and same 7 to 10 miles to the fish, but when I come in I am right there at NB to sell the fish saving the 50 miles & the time to drive and sell. But the bad part is crossing Buzzards Bay, it can get real nasty when the wind picks up!! |
4o gal/trip x 40 trips @ 3.50 = 5,600-
This doesnt include any other expenses. |
Well I think the bottom line is if you love to fish whether it be from shore or boat your going to have an increase of say 30% from last year if you fish the same. Save the money up, go fishing and have fun.
Makes more sense than selling your big boat or truck for less than you think you should only to have to spend money on a different rig. Before you know it you just spent more than the 30% projected extra fuel if you did nothing. |
well i have a 23' with a 225hp and just put a 9.9 kicker on it last year and will use the 225 just to get to the fishing spot then use the 9.9 to move around...it will run all day on 6 gal
|
$3.50 a gallon might be a dream come Memorial Day. For those who have bigger boats, imagine what they will have to pay at the docks? I imagine they will be paying well north of $5/gallon. I bet there will many boats sitting idle at the docks this year.
|
This is going to be expensive. Our avg burn on a 5 hour bass trip is 30-35 gal and offshore is 65 -70 gal.
Diesel was $4.20 at the marina the other day... |
Over here (as of this AM) diesel is 4.67, regular is 4.16. No question we will see 5 bucks. I was just watching the news and OPEC is EXPECTING to see 200 a barrel for crude and the price at the pump in the US to $10/gal within 2 years. I think if the tide does not turn on fuel prices we will see the end of pleasure power boating in the US as we know it. Not to mention the ripple effect thru the economy. You simply are not going to take tiny boats with small motors into the waters around here.
|
it's my truck that kills me with the towing. 40 miles to the ramp. Can fish pretty cheap, Honda 90 and a 15 hp tin boat, but the darn truck is the thirsty one. May be leaving the boat at work on Cape more often this year.

Sounds like it could be a scene from Mad Max or Waterworld.......... |
Just wait till the day you fill up and come back to the dock two days later to find you only have a half tank.
Its gonna get real ugly. |
Prof M
I might be able to hook you up with a parking spot for the boat close to your favorite fishing area. |
Every day i think the decision to buy the 14 foot skiff and 25 hp 4 stroke was a good idea...thank God I live right here in Hyannis and can get to the water in minutes
|
Estamated fuel cost
New boat.
5-7 gph @ cruise should do 400+ hrs for the season ! Most likely going to be $5.00 + per gal for diesel |
just bought a boat and this makes me nervous.

we can drill sideways now from a distance.... and leave sufficient room for the Animals.... when fishing seems like people will have to motor out...then shut off the motor and just drift with the wind until they see fish...on the electronics runnin and gunning will be History... gee didn't we save Kuwait's butt recently... |
At least I know that i am saving $$$$ being in the YC marina.
16$/foot compared to 125+/foot x 21' is well over 2k savings.:kewl: That will buy a good amountof fuel.. Plus our gas is cheaper than most marinas that sell to the public. (which we don't) and my house is only 3-4 miles from my slip and i bought a smaller truck better mileage. Even with all that.... It still hurts!!!!!!!!!!!!...:fury::fury: |

$16/ft ? You must pay a large "fee" There is no way they can make any money on $16/ft and quite frankly with the slip prices the way they are now it sounds like a bad business decision. How can they say in business? My rate this year is $165/ft and there is a waiting list behind me if I bail.
Between the slip, insurance, maintenance and fuel I'll be looking at 12K for the season. (excluding fishing gear and bait expense) for a 23' boat. I recall the day when you could buy a new boat this size for less than that. I am seriously thinking of mothballing or selling it and playing more golf and surf casting. Either that or picking up a larger boat in a distressed sale and doing some inshore chartering but I wonder that the market will be weak as there will be a million guys chartering to support their fishing habit and fewer charters willing to pay the going rate given the fuel costs. I really enjoyed golf and I think it is time to dust off the Mizunos. |

One of the best kept secrets around. and no new members being accepted.... |
after thinkin about mr Sandmans post
and $10.00 per gallon gas... all night long....i woke up thinkin... time to start buildin a horse Barn :hs: |
Just went through last year's fuel receipts, which were pretty complete. $1500.00.
So with a 30% increase, I'd say I'm looking at around $1950.00. While I won't be taking it to Cuttyhunk this year, a couple Stellwagen trips will offset that. On the bright side, I don't have to pay the sales tax this year, and the mooring is paid for. Acording to the local yard, a number of folks are not putting their boats in this year. |
Next stop...Venezuela
"Gasoline costs roughly the same to make no matter where in the world it's produced, according to John Felmy, chief economist for the American Petroleum Institute. The difference in retail costs, he said, is that some governments subsidize gas while others tax it heavily.
In many oil producing nations gas is absurdly cheap. In Venezuela it's 12 cents a gallon. In Saudi Arabia it's 45. The governments there forego the money from selling that oil on the open market - instead using the money to make their people happy and encourage their nations' development." I am going to look into retiring and fishing off venezuela in a big ass boat....SERIOUSLY. |
Jim,
a good friend of my fathers runs a 60?ft Hatt, and they were in Venezuela recently for a tournament, I think I heard it was 0.25/gal for diesel. then they run back to St. Thomas where it is probably 5.00+ |
I am looking into it. IMO it is worth it. I found a nice house on an island for 65K. No jobs to be had whatsoever down there. I could retire in a remote area/island with a big ass yacht and catch some real fish and burn a ton of fuel for next to nothing. I'd keep a small place in the US to come back to to visit during peak season here. Burn most of my gas down there.... his fuel thing is over the top. 12 cents a gallon!!?...They are probably still making money at that rate too. I'll have to vacation down there a few times to check it out. Fishing looks pretty darn good though. PS electric costs are next to nothing too. The infrastructure sucks and power can and does go out from time to time but the cost for a big place is like 50 bucks per month, a few cents per KWH. You can hire a couple of locals for 285/month too...unreal.
