74 pound Striper

I just heard(confirmed) a 74 pound striper was boated today at B.I.. Fish was weighed at Pt. Judith. Angler unknown at this point.

striperman36 07-19-2008 04:58 PM

Wow, records will be broken this year

Flaptail 07-19-2008 05:02 PM

Wow! Lucky bastage, wasn't there suppossedly a 86 pounder caught and weighed there in the late 1800"s, unfortunately the documentation was lost or something I guess. Land of the big ones for sure!

Nebe 07-19-2008 05:09 PM

thats a new state record :pats:

striperman36 07-19-2008 08:33 PM

actually 75.4 on the RISAA site.
We are going to have a tough time beating that, it was also weighed in for OTW Striper Cup

Miller 07-19-2008 10:54 PM

inTHERAPY 07-19-2008 11:15 PM

OTW is gonna have to make a 70 pin!

Plum Crazy 07-20-2008 05:21 AM

Someone has to have a pic of that beast.
OR a link to the story.
Maybe they are keeping quiet till IGFA gets a look at it???
We wouldn't want anymore scandals like the fluke fiasco.

Peter Vican stuck the cow and CONGRATS to him. He spends a lot of time fishing the island and knows it well. Well deserved fish for Peter, he puts a lot of time in.

RIROCKHOUND 07-20-2008 08:31 AM

Good god damn.
monster fish.

I guess sand eels + bass = great fishing

JohnR 07-20-2008 08:39 AM

Congrats to Peter :btu: - that's huge! (and should be a new state record once all the Ts are dotted and Eyes are crossed)

Yeah, Flap, there was an 86 pounder caught - and the operative phrase here is 'supposedly caught' - on the Island in 1887. The fisherman was a Providence attorney and politician named Francis W. Miner who summered on the Island at the Ocean View Hotel near Old Harbor. There was a bass stand right out back although a number of them were erected shortly afterwards.

If memory serves (and it doesn't very well lately, it seems :hs:), the stand Miner caught the bass from was built by Henry Steers, nephew of James R Steers, the 87 year old guy pictured in my avatar. The stands and 2 of the 3 clubhouses are gone now, over the edge at Mohegan Bluffs. Miner's house is still there and now called Bit-O-Heaven and the locals refer to the area as Miner's Point.

As it turns out, the Steers in my avatar (which I didn't know when I used it in the logo for The Angler's Art) is the great-great-grandfather of my best friend who was also my best man. (Boy, is that weird - but then he actually does look like him in profile) Can't say fishing is genetically influenced though - my best bud isn't much of an angler, he couldn't catch crabs in a Cambodian cathouse.

The Steers brothers were well known as naval architects and ship-builders. They designed and built the yacht America and sailed it to victory in 1851 to start the America's Cup.

Anyway, Miner's fish was never - to my knowledge - verified.

However, there was a photographer on the Island at that time who took pictures of the notable catches of the day and I have a recent lead on one of his descendents - who has his original photos.

Stay tuned :smokin:

Slipknot 07-20-2008 10:44 AM

Congrats to that guy
Holy crap!!!!
did he get it on that rod and reel I wonder?
That is awesome:cheers2:

Mr. Sandman 07-20-2008 11:18 AM

I heard from several sources that another high 70 was taken from Orient Point. I think your best bet for a fish like that is fish the race or gut with live scup or bunker deep.

BassDawg 07-20-2008 11:36 AM

THAT, is a BEE yoo Teee!
:claps: :claps: :claps: :claps:

nice girth and a job WELL DONE, Mr Vican!!

If he caught on the spinner, that would be a 'double' holy crap.:jump1:

The Iceman 6 07-20-2008 01:32 PM

Check out the rig in the picture that Pete caught the linesider on (I'm assuming it's the one used to land her or else why be in the picture right?). Must of been some ride! Congratulations man...

Ice

The Iceman 6 07-20-2008 01:33 PM

Was so excited, didn't see Slip's post. Carry on.

Plum Crazy 07-20-2008 02:09 PM

Thank you for the link.
Congrats to Mr. Vican. It will take a long time to come down from that catch.
What a beautiful fish.http://bestsmileys.com/fainting/1.gif

jmonte45 07-20-2008 03:32 PM

That is unbelievable, congrats to that guy.....very nice!

protty31 07-20-2008 04:10 PM

One hell of a fish. Especially if it was caught on that setup.
Wow just wow

BasicPatrick 07-20-2008 04:39 PM

Awesome fish and I am so glad it was caught by an angler that puts in his time.

Sandman...I can second the rumor of an over seventy pound bass caught on Orient Point...I receved a call some time ago telling me the fish was caught and during the call I was told no one would here who or where until the fall...things theat make you go hmmmmmm

TianaBeachDude 07-20-2008 04:43 PM

Congratz to the angler for having the oportunity to fight such a fish.

TBD

Brian L 07-20-2008 07:32 PM

Killer fish!

I spoke to Ron at Breachway Bait and Tackle today when I was driving in from fishing. He saw the fish in person and claimed it was 55" long and incredibly thick. Congrats, Peter!

likwid 07-20-2008 07:46 PM

Nice hat.

Squibby17 07-20-2008 07:53 PM

That sure is one impressive fish.

Seeing this guy is a vetern angler you would think he would have a larger set up fishing eels? Not to question it, Just amazing to reel a fish like that in on a medium sized rod.

Mike P 07-20-2008 10:09 PM

You really can't tell a hell of a lot about how ballsy a rod is when the guy's holding it up straight.

The reel looks to be a Penn Slammer 560 in the pictures I saw. You can get plenty of 50# braid on one of them. Tony Stetzko used a Penn 650, which isn't much bigger, for his 73. And he wasn't fishing 50# test line, either. McReynolds used a Penn 710 which is about the same size as a 560 Slammer.

:kewl:Couldn't have happened to a better guy than Pete. He puts his time in and certainly gets his share. What people don't know is how generous he is, especially to the RISAA charities. Among them he has for years made signficant contributions to the "Take a City Kid Fishing" days that the club puts on. Good things should happen to good people. Congrats to Peter!!!

Yup, it is good to see something like that happen to a good guy :btu:

Karma actually works -

Rockport24 07-21-2008 09:07 AM

THAT'S AWESOME!
there was a 70 pounder taken somwhere in NY I assume, it was on the cover of The Fisherman this past week!
so with this rumored one from Orient Point, that would make three 70's taken this year????? I wonder how many seasons that has happened?
Also great to see a seasoned guy get it, not some lucky newbie that got on a charter or something.

PaulS 07-21-2008 09:33 AM

Great fish.

I thought I remember reading that right before the last collapse there were many large fish caught - is tha correct?

Skitterpop 07-21-2008 09:54 AM

True ^^^^^

But here is hoping that that correlation does not meet todays conditions of the stock.

Rock on Striped Bass :hihi:

Congrats to Peter on a fantastic bass :musc:

EarnedStripes44 07-21-2008 10:15 AM

Good to see big fish like that landed.

Circlehook 07-21-2008 10:42 AM

Are there as many fish being kept, or sold today as there where before the last collapse? It seems as though there is alot more awareness and preventitive measures being taken now than there where then.

ridler72 07-21-2008 02:58 PM

Nice score Peter. Oh man, the SF hat to boot! lol
