Bluefishtalk

We have a stripertalk thread,
Why not a thread for bluefish???
There are Big Fans of BLUEFISH!!!
Any bluefish around the northshore???
I tried Plum Island yesterday and came up empty, even though
the fishing reports in the local paper were reporting bluefish around.

Raider Ronnie 07-20-2008 09:11 AM

Blue fish are only good for 1 thing, tuna bait !

Swimmer 07-20-2008 10:37 AM

I had bluefish chasing my offerings in the canal yesterday.

GooGoo Man 07-20-2008 11:19 AM

I have been fishing the plum island area, the mouth, joppa, etc. so far no bluefish:crying: I kinda miss them!

BigFish 07-20-2008 11:20 AM

I like bluefish!

Mr. Sandman 07-20-2008 11:24 AM

Bluefish are fun. Many charterfisherman have had their day saved by the bluefish. At times here on the vineyard they are in more demand than bass and the buyers have paid the same for bass and blues.

numbskull 07-20-2008 12:47 PM

I owe a lot to bluefish.

doc 07-20-2008 01:05 PM

blues have been non-existent so far this season on the north shore...

sean curry 07-20-2008 01:14 PM

None around Cohasset. Believe it or not, Bluefish is my favorite fish to eat! I like strong fish. Even my kids eat Bluefish, baked or grilled.

Clammer 07-20-2008 01:48 PM

My dealer WILL NOT even buy bluefish <><><:agree:

UserRemoved1 07-20-2008 02:03 PM

Bluefish are great for business :kewl:

basswipe 07-20-2008 02:31 PM

I don't mind bluefish.I've had the pleasure on more than one occasion of catching 20lb+ fish.Absolute insane fight.Any blue over 15 is an absolute blast.

A good single hook tin, wire leader,lip-grip and pliers and you're all set for some good non-stop action.

basswipe 07-20-2008 02:33 PM

Btw good thread riverrat.:kewl:

Pete F. 07-20-2008 02:50 PM

When I have really gotten into them, after a while I just reel as fast as I can to watch them try and kill the lure, then slow it down, let them catch it, with any luck they self release.

MVbluefish 07-20-2008 03:05 PM

Nothin' puts a hurt on my casting arm like a day of monster choppers tearing up my Rangers, Ballistic missiles, and Line stretcher Surface Tensions. I love a day I lose count and need aspirins to recover. Hurts so good!

Bloooofish talk, keep talkin bloofish talk...http://www.miconejo.net/img/forum/icon_smile.gif

I don't know if they're around or not... I haven't been fishing in weeks! BUT
I do enjoy the fight of a large one, especially if there are not multiple trebles on the plug I catch them on. Without hijacking the thread, can we share some recipes for those of us that wouldn't count them as #1 table fare but don't mind taking a few once in a while if we have company that doesn't mind the occasional "fishy" fish?

riverrat55 07-20-2008 03:20 PM

Well, I hope the bluefish will be here next week!!!
I start 2 weeks of vacation on Saturday and hope to get into some big bluefish!!!
I will report to everyone how the fishing is!!!

basswipe 07-20-2008 03:21 PM

I'm actually taking the dogs and bringing my rod to my absolute favorite bluefish spot tonight.

MVbluefish 07-20-2008 03:25 PM

My favorite bluefish game is to remove the hooks and see if you can get one to hold on till it hits the beach. Its important to keep the rod to the side so you don't get hit when they let go.:tooth:

big ones are fun to fight.. if you're gonna eat em bleed em. my girlfriends mom loves the little blues I bring home for her. she cooks them in wrapped in foil, with lemons, mayo, and bread crumbs. Our dog cowboy used to loved bloofish grilled and mixed in his alpo. I like the way my old friend smokes them, its absolutely delicious.. all ive caught is small ones this year..belly's good for flukin too

steve 07-21-2008 03:56 PM

If I never caught another blufish again I would not mind.

Because this is Striped-BASS.com silly! Seriously, some love 'em some hate 'em (clammer?) and some dont mind 'em once in a while....me I dont mind 'em. Especially now with this year lack of fishing I would take just about any kind of fishing....

GonnaCatchABig1 07-21-2008 06:14 PM

i am eagerly awaiting them this year. surprised they aren't around yet. then again they didn't really hit in droves till the end of august last year. but i'm so hard for some fish, bloooos would be amazing. hell i got all excited the other night over some dogs. (well as excited as you can get over a dog)

bring on the blooooos!

Bloofish are our friends!:D All kidding aside blues are much maligned.Pound for pound they fight very hard and don't give up ,even out of the water! Just because they are not picky or rare ,is not a reason to look down your nose at them and deem them "unworthy". They explode on a plug and jump and are great for kids to learn on,and big kids like me have fun with them too. Of COURSE I'd rather have a 74lb striper but blues can be a lot of fun too.

bassballer 07-22-2008 07:11 AM

I always say how much I hate bluefish, until its 4am and I havent caught squat! Then Im secretley praying for a bluefish to hit my plug.

striper97 07-22-2008 08:13 AM

haven't seen any blues at all ,,,,there are still plenty of macs off the ma./nh coast which makes me think they just are not here or at least in big numbers. i luv fishing for blues,,pound for pound a great fight

fishbones 07-22-2008 08:44 AM

I like catching them when there are no bass around. They're also great when taking someone new to fishing out, as long as you give them the warnings about the teeth.

As for eating, they're actually not very fishy tasting if you bleed them out immediately and get them on ice. This keeps them from banging around bruising their flesh and releasing the amino acids. That's what causes the strong taste. If you want a great appetizer, cut filets into thin strips, roll them up and wrap bacon around them. Then stick toothpicks through and grill them or throw them in the oven. People will think they are eating scallops wrapped in bacon. Also, the previously mentioned putting them in foil with lemon, mayo and breadcrumbs is good. If you like smoked fish, blues are great. I'd rather see the bass live another day and take some bluefish home if I'm in the mood for seafood.

kenyee 07-22-2008 11:49 AM

As long as they're bled properly, I actually prefer eating blues to striper (which is a bit bland in comparison unless you eat the belly strip). Blues also grow faster so they don't have as much mercury if you cut the red strips out.
When I caught my first schoolie, I remember a weird pull, rest, pull rest kind of fight. With a bluefish, it's pull pull pull until the end and then it still flops around once you land it and until you bleed it out. :-)
The striper hunt is a lot more challenging though...

Rockport24 07-22-2008 12:24 PM

I've only caught a few blues in my day, none over 3 pounds, but I remember hooking one and seeing a flash of a small fish, just thinking it would be another dink striper, and then being caught off guard when the thing just took off and put up a tussle. I can only imagine what a 15 pounder pulls like!

BassyiusMaximus 07-22-2008 12:27 PM

Here are two good recipies. One is from a family friend, his goes like this.

Take the bluefish, do all the gutting/icing, and prepare it any way you want, with whatever herbs and spices and oils, etc, that you prefer. Then carefully place the bluefish in the oven, on top of a brick. When the fish is done, take the fish off the brick, throw away the fish and eat the brick. Ha, this guy was not a fan of bluefish whatsoever, I love that recipie.

Here is the simple recipie we made for him that changed his mind.

Do all the gutting/bleeding/on ice stuff,

Scale then fillet the fish. (bluefish has to be the easiest fish next to fluke to fillet) Cut the fillets into easy-to-fry pieces. Marinate the bluefish overnight/24 hours in vinegar and crushed, minced, chopped garlic, a little salt and pepper, that is it. Then just fry the fish, simple and you won't believe it is bluefish. We had our family friend try it and he says "I can eat that."

If there were a "BluefishTalk" how would the threads go?

Q: What lures to use for bluefish?
A: (always) Any!

Q: What colors to use for bluefish?
A: (always) Any!

Q: What tide, what moon phase, where to try for them?
A: Any tide, any moon phase, fish everywhere!

kenyee 07-22-2008 01:09 PM

that reminds me...we went on a tuna charter last year and found nothing, so the captain brought us over to race point near provincetown MA and that was our first experience w/ bluefish. Since it was September, these things were massive (easily 1.5x the size/girth of the one in the one in the above image)...I swear a few were a good 20-25#. I wish I weighed one. We used tuna gear on them (heavy braid and conventional reels) and hauled them in w/o tiring them out and they were bouncing all over deck. Even when thrown into the cooler, they'd bounce off the top of it so hard, they'd almost get out so someone had to sit on the cooler to keep the lid on. Tap on the side and they'd slam the top of it like crazy.
How's that for bluefishtalk? :-)

RIJIMMY 07-22-2008 03:12 PM

I am goign to come across as a jerk, but just like bass, people WAY over estimate the size of bluefish.
The RIJIMMY Calcualtor:
They say and What it really is
10lbs - 6lbs
15lbs - 9lbs
20lbs - 12lbs
25lbs - 16lbs

BassyiusMaximus 07-22-2008 03:19 PM

Does not the saying/joke go;

There are 3 sizes of fish caught. Small, Medium, and, the one that got away.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head. I can't believe some of the pictures I see of fish that I know are not close to what the person claims they are. Years ago, I caught a blue that I swore went 25 pounds easy. That was after a hard fight on pretty light tackle. My friend said it wasn't close to 25 and we bet a 6 pack. He pulled out the scale and it barely made 18 pounds. I bought him the beer when we got back to the dock. I now weigh anything that to me is a big fish.

While we're at it, I think most people also grossly exagerate the legnth of time it took to fight and reel in a fish. When someone say's it took 20 minutes, it's usually more like 5.

kenyee 07-22-2008 04:55 PM

lol..or maybe it's because they just look larger flopping around like that and looking angry ;-)

I went through some of the pics from the trip but didn't take a pic of that biggest one. The smaller ones were roughly the same size as the one in the above pic. And they did take maybe 5min to reel in at most because of the heavy gear.

shadow 07-22-2008 05:07 PM

the only blue I like is the one on my partners line:D

BillM 07-23-2008 04:16 PM

I love blues, they are my favorite fish to catch. The bigger and meaner they are the better I like'm. Dont get me wrong, I want to come home with a trophy bass, but I would miss blues if I didnt catch one once in a while.
