You might be a googan if....

Okay, this isn't a thread to bash anyone, just for chits and giggles :bl:. Just to get through this snowstorm and the last few weeks of winter. This is to be done a la Jeff Foxworthy's "You might be a redneck if..". I know there are some wicked sharp wits out there, so have at it. If it gets good, maybe I'll put up a poll a couple of weeks from now and have the members pick the best line and send the winner a prize ;).

Let me get this started.

-You might be a googan if....you insist on fishing your spinning reel above the rod and reel backwards.

-You might be a googan if....you cast your conventional with the clicker on to prevent backlashes.

-You might be a googan if....you show up to fish under the light at Montauk in jeans and sneakers (with a gold VS).

-You might be a googan if....you insist that the red pork rind trailer on your pencil popper helps you catch more fish (true story).

-You might be a googan if... you have to rifle through your multi-drawer Plano box for the right lure when the blitz breaks out.

if you spell striper with two P's

JohnR 03-02-2009 09:22 AM

You might be a googan if....you spend hundred and hundreds on the biggest surfcasting gear you can find - 12foot Daiwa, 9500SS Penn so that you can outcast everyone and be the he-man fisher. Only to find out that A) You Suck & B) Anyone with a balanced 9' rod will out cast you and will out fish you. (Yes, I was once the googan with the 12' Daiwa - though I still suck I look much better doing it :musc: ).

You sure that's not because you fish in the dark now?

Slipknot 03-02-2009 10:12 AM

You might be a googan if you drag a plugbag the size of a suitcase around Cuttyhunk and wear yourself out because you have to have the right lure and don't know which one that will be. :rollem:

Joe 03-02-2009 10:12 AM

If you use a net to beach a fish - I did that.

jimmy z 03-02-2009 10:17 AM

if one has to ask themselves if they are one.:)

You might be a googan if...
A) You kick a bluefish back into the water like a soccer ball.
B) You leave more line on the rocks and ground than on your spool.
C) Keep Short Fish
D) Stand behind the group of guys fishing in waders, because you are only wearing cut-off shorts and tennis shoes, and try lobbing 10 oz of bait and weight over their heads because you cant wade out as well.

Slipknot 03-02-2009 10:47 AM

if you run down to the waters edge and cast your bait out as hard as you can and stand there as the line peels out on your toes reaching way out so you get the most out of the cast.

Rappin Mikey 03-02-2009 11:00 AM

You might be a googan if you try and lip a bluefish.

How do you know it didn't?

MAKAI 03-02-2009 11:49 AM

Googans do catch fish though, saw a guy get a 50 plus fishing an eel on an apple bobber, spinning reel half full of 60# mono, in a sand sand spike,at night. Also after plugging and eeling the back all nite I was sitting on my tailgate having breakfast, when a googan shows up with garage sale gear, tosses out half a frozen mac. Yup, easy 55# in ten minutes, bright july sun, 9:00 am. So I went in town bought some crack and called it a day.

Your night fishing arsenal includes a boom box and a coleman lantern.

1.If you keep turning (reeling) the handle while the fish is taking line.

2.Also after chuming BFtuna all day and the captain starts the boat and the chaffing gear (16oz. bank sinker taped on a tube) from one rod gets wrapped aroung the prop (inboard) and you throw a rope over the stern and open the Tuna door and hop in with a knife and a mask and swim under the boat cutting it free managing to cut yourself (minor cut) and after 15 mins. you hop back on board just realizing the chum stopped just before this happened. What could be following the chum line??????

3. You want the wire line to go alittle deeper while trolling and freespool without thumbing the spool (person on a charter when my back was turned GRRRR.)

4. Nobody tells you the beach was closed all day to swimming you get there after 5 and put your mask and fins on to scout this new beach to fish that evening spend about 45min. swimming out about 100 yards 20'-30' of water looking for structure. Head to the bait shop and tell them. They tell you the beach was closed and why .....two 10'-12'tiger sharks were spotted just off the beach that morning.

During my first year fishing jetties, just doing the rotation one night among a bunch of seasoned dudes, all strangers, I got flustered and panicked when one of the guys tells me im tangled on his line, while he is fighting a fish. Tried to undo whatever I did for a minute or 2, then figured it would be quicker to cut and run, since the last thing I wanted to do was to piss somebody off. Too bad i cut his line instead of mine. Boy did I feel stupid, but I felt a little better when I saw him catch a bluefish a few minutes later with his needlefish hanging out of its mouth, the one that I cut off.

Sweetwater 03-02-2009 02:43 PM

You may be a googan if...

you leave all your tackle in open Plano boxes on your tail gate and drive off leaving your gear in the sand (me). :)

you throw a nice fish under your truck to keep it out of the sun and drive off, forgetting the fish (you know who you are).

you accidentally knock an idling boat in reverse while your fishing companion is casting off the bow.

you do that on purpose

ecduzitgood 03-02-2009 03:30 PM

Another one I did...I waded out to the mud flat off of the Mass. Maritine Academy ship with 20lbs of makerel in a bag in my herring basket cut for chumming/chunking. This flat is only accessible at low tide so when you go it's for six hours+/- and you are 200+yds. from shore looking at the Maritine ship between you and land and looking at the flat drop off into the canal. Start chumming and catching fish for about two hours when suddenly the fish stop hitting and I get cut off a couple of times and suddenly realize a shark (never saw him) picked up my chum slick and I am standing in waist high water....I backed out onto the highest point on the flat about two feet of water at high tide and waited till I could get back to shore safely; real spooky when it got to be dark. Last time I ever fished that spot. One other time I was out there fishing the far end I watched a boat try to go between me and the shore line heading for Buttermilk bay. Tried to wave at them to stop but it was too late they came to a stop and had to wait till there was enough water to free the boat. One of the women on board spotted me and they all started laughing at the guy who was behind the wheel.:rotf2:

Yes it was. I did some pretty foolish things in my youth because of my love for fishing. The wire line was while I was a mate working a 55' Hatteras.

And I also type, edit, type, edit, type.

Funny you should mention this, as I was vacationing in Hawaii back in '92, and we were staying on the islan of Kauai (?).
We took a trip up to the "Barking Sands Beach" on the north west shore, just south of the Napali coast. We spent the day swimming and relaxing, marvelling in the fact that there weren't more than 6 other people on the 1+ mile of beach.

When we got back to the condo we were staying at, we read in USA Today that there had been a shark sighting/attack at the beach the weekend before we got there.:err::err::err::err:

SirWinston 03-02-2009 03:41 PM

You might be a googan if....

...you spool up three reels with braid (old style Fireline), head out fishing with one of them, and only when you are waist deep wading you find out that the blasted braid slips on the spool while reeling in just the lure because you didn't put any mono backing on.....and knowing as you trudge back to the car that this is going to be the same situation for all three reels......

Agreed :uhuh:. A goog is the one who catches a fish, and then doesn't know whether to lip it, step on it, or throw a towel over the fish's head. And then freaks out when the fish starts flapping around when he's going to unhook it :rotf2:.
