Well Done, Jake!!!

JakeF 09-22-2009 10:15 AM

Thanks guys. She was a happy fish when I set her free. It would have been nice to weigh her, but it was not worth killing such a magnificent beast for that. At 58" with a nice belly, I can only imagine what that scale would have read...... Hopefully she'll live long and see a few more spawning seasons before I see her again. :)

doc 09-22-2009 10:27 AM

awesome...even better on the release...

Islander77 09-22-2009 10:33 AM

Congrats on the catch.

As an aside, ran into some of your club members recently. Please tell them that the area they were at this past weekend needs to be respected and walking on the lawns and using lights is going to ruin the good thing that is there. A word of advise and a friendly heads up.

A lifetime of good fishing Karma !

Your act of sportsmanship and resource stewardship will be repaid many times over.

PS Just how does one measure a 5 footer while bobbing in the water?

decksweeper 09-22-2009 11:16 AM

I was wondering the same thing on how to measure a huge fish like that while both of you are literally moving in the water.

The Iceman 6 09-22-2009 11:22 AM

Jake has to have benchmarks on the rod (i.e, 30, 40, 50 inch). I know I do. Great fish and great release, once again Congrats.

JakeF 09-22-2009 11:33 AM

Good question, lol. It wasn't easy :) If I was a shorter guy than my 6'3" it would have been even harder.

She was very docile after I got my hand on her jaw, so I got underneath her so she was laying flat on my belly and legs, tail fork touching the top of my boot, nose on my chest. Laid my rod next to her with the butt also touching the top of my boot. Her nose was exactly one palm width from my first guide. I measured that distance on the rod after I got back to the truck.

I've done this before with other fish, and am confident that the measurement was as accurate as if she were lying on the beach. If anything, the slight bow in her tail would have caused her to measure a bit shorter than she actually was, but that was good enough for me.

bart 09-22-2009 11:35 AM

congrats!

luds 09-22-2009 11:47 AM

That sounds like some hardcore and extreme measurement.

zimmy 09-22-2009 01:48 PM

awesome

Raven 09-22-2009 02:49 PM

Congrats

58" with a nice belly is a huge fish. Not sure of the accuracy of the chart i'm using but the minimum weight of a 55" inch fish is 56lbs and the minimum weight went up 4 lbs from 54". If that scale is correct the least that fish could weigh would be 68lbs. If it had "a nice belly" potentially it would be a world record fish as the average weight for a 55" fish is 70lb using the same scale.

I'm not going to criticize anyone for releasing or keeping a fish but that fish would be hanging from a scale if it was me. I would have to know the lbs. It would bug me if I didn't. Claiming to catch a 58" fish is going to generate some discussion.

Finaddict 09-22-2009 04:20 PM

Nice catch - would have liked to have seen that situation - weighing a biggun like that in the water floating around ... hats off to you for catching and releasing the thing.

5/0 09-22-2009 04:35 PM

These charts are pretty handy for recreational fishing and a quick guied line for bragging rights,I feel the best way for true accuracy is to weigh it in at a weigh station with a certified scale, but in this case she was released so from here on out it's all speculation and what ifs.

The chart are based on average fish length, weight & girth, the number of fish that were used in this survey is also averaged up to help the making this chart,

I truly don't know when this chart was last updated but I don't think it's up to todays bass standard weights.

As and example I caught a 49.5" fish the minimum weight is 44# she was only 40# I have caught countless fish that fall short of the charts.

I hear what your saying, a fish of that size and how it was measure is kinda questionable but if this is how he's been doing it and believes it's accurate then I believe him.
If I was to catch a fish that size I don't know what I would do.....I would be at a tough cross road.

The only one it should really matter to is him since he was resigned to let it go. Great fish even if it was plus or minus a couple inches. I'd have to guess well over 60. Congrats.

I never doubted he C&R a great fish,,,, but the accuracy is tough to justify all things considered....

JohnR 09-22-2009 04:49 PM

Accuracy hard to guage but it was A) Big and B) Released. Thumbs up.

Now back to my call with India

Rob Rockcrawler 09-22-2009 05:10 PM

Awesome fish, and good call on the release.

Slipknot 09-22-2009 05:24 PM

Congratulations Jake:btu: that is what I'd call a super cow:uhuh:

And many Props for releasing her alive :claps::claps::claps::claps:
That is what really matters:fishin:

maddog2020 09-22-2009 05:39 PM

Cow swam off to fight another day. :)

Awesome job ! :D

Backbeach Jake 09-22-2009 05:52 PM

Taking it to them in their house! Wow what a fish. Congratulations.

PRBuzz 09-22-2009 06:53 PM

Check out these numbers: "The IGFA all-tackle world record striped bass! This massive fish was caught at night by Al McReynolds off of the Vermont Avenue jetty in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He was fishing during a September 21st 1982 Nor'easter storm. It weighed in at 78-1/2 lbs., was 53" long and its girth was measured at 34 - 1/2"."

Only 53"!! What a girth.

Way to go Jake on a great fish and her future offspring (maybe like breeding thoroughbreds, it is in the bloodline).

Adam_777 09-22-2009 07:36 PM

Congrats Jake.Somebody buy this guy one of those waterproof cameras damnit.:buds:

JakeF 09-22-2009 09:50 PM

Honestly guys, I really don't care what she weighed. I'm confident I got an accurate length measurement with a minimal amount of trauma to the fish. I've measured fish like that before, and I know what she looked like laying on top of me.

Plus...

I got to watch her swim away,,, and that's what mattered most to me. It's nice to see most folks appreciate that. :) Thank you!

numbskull 09-23-2009 05:18 AM

The skill to catch it and the character to release it says much about you. And it is all good. Congrats and thanks.

HESH2 09-23-2009 06:30 AM

great fish and the release was even better

Jim2 09-23-2009 08:56 AM

wow. please don't tell me Ed wasn't there to witness that cow.

WoodyCT 09-23-2009 09:29 AM

Bigguns

There's more truly big fish out there than folks realize. Numerous WR fish have been caught and released since the last WR was set. These old girls are too wise/too strong/too tough to find to be caught with any regularity, but they are out there.

The guys skilled and dedicated enough to catch these giants generally aren't attention whores who seek the fame, tackle sponsorships, or status a huge fish brings, so you don't hear about these wise old fish being weighed in. These men, like Jake, respect the fish too much to kill them for any reason, although I'm sure they'd weigh them in if they came to gaff dead or too spent to survive.

Jake- get a Olympus waterproof camera before that fish and her blue haired friends leave town. With your karma, you may just get another sleigh ride!

Then again, maybe the Golden Girls will be at Cutty for me and the boys this weekend?
