So tempting |
Are you are planning on taking the ferry out of New Haven?
|
It's a long way no matter which way you go ...
But if anyone is interested in considering the weekend before or after - possibly the weekends of Oct 31 or Nov 14 ... I would be open to considering it as well ... |

no ferry out of NH. Its out of lovely Bridgeport.
|
New London is the ferry you want.
https://www.longislandferry.com/Default.asp Then the 2 Shelter Island ferries (eff driving around) then through Sag and onto the Montauk Highway. :D This time of year, call same day to make a reservation. |
I'm not going to be able to make it. But if you go, take the ferry from New LONDON drive west from the ferry to the town of Greenport and look for the Shelter Island Ferry signs right on Rte 25A (That's the road west from the ferry) Take the ferry onto shelter island, drive the length of the island and then take the ferry off the island to Sag Harbor. (follow Rte 111 all the way) Stay on Rte 114 to Rte 25 (Montauk Highway) and hang a left. It'll take you right into Montauk.
|
Just got back from there. Worked the area real hard. Nothing great. Biggest was about 36" - 37". Fishing was difficult for everyone. Very spotty. Maybe I was there too early this year and it may be better in a week or two

I believe it's Rte 114 to Rte 27. You have those guys looking for 111 and 25 and they'll end up 80 miles west of Montauk right around the corner from my house :grins:. |

I'm (now) about 15min from South Ferry. :hihi: |

Definitely better to drive to New london and do the orient point , shelter Island , Hamptons ferry route. I haven't done it in years but did it about 20 times back in the early 80's. It must be fairly expensive for the ferries now but it beats all the driving going towarsd the city and back out.
I used to love fishing Montauk but stayed away from under the light. I fished turtle Cove to the light then past the light all the way out to shagwong point and beyond. Rigged eels were better than anything in November , even better than live IMO Is the shagwong cafe still there? That place had real character and characters! :) |
Yup, the Shagwong is still there :). As far as taking the ferries, it's not worth it if you have GPS. It's a little over an hour's drive when you get off the Orient ferry so by the time you wait for the 2 extra ferries ;).

I was once sitting at the bar at the shagwong and the guy next to me was drinking draft beers and as many do at their local bar , the guy drinking the drafts just left his change on the counter so the bartender could just work off that money instead of having to reach into his pocket each time.
WEll he passed out cold , head down on the bar. The bartender came over , took his glass and filled it up , took the right amount of money and put the glass on the bar right infront of the passed out guys head. I looked at the bartender with I guess a strage look because without me saying anything he told me " this happens every night. He'll wake up in a while and just start drinking the beer in front of him and not even know he had passed out for a while". :) That incident and the big Blue Marlin head sticking out of the wall made the Shagwong Cafe a must visit place for me when I went to Montauk. It was my kind of place. :) |
Saying on a tee shirt now available at some shops:
"Montauk, a quaint little drinking village with a fishing problem" :D. Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device |
So..... Did you crush them?????
|
There were pockets of schoolie bass and blues. Nothing large was taken when I was there. Lots of bait off shore but the wind did not cooperarte. Jigs were working the best. I caught most of the fish with a 1 once bullet head with a purple bass assasin. I spent a lot of time working the top with big plugs but could not get anything to hit. Caught all the fish on jigs.
|
You know of course it turned on a bit as of yesterday. Lots of sand eels moved close to the beach. Still mostly blues, but of the bigger variety. Today was mostly mid sized blues to 8 lbs. The few bass that came up were all over 20 lbs. though. I kept fishing a big metal lip to try to cull a bass, but just kept getting bluefish after bluefish . They loved my Bigfish Prey.
Side note : Larry, I'll need a new Ice Blue Prey :D. Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device |
