It is that time again... Books to (re)read:

• Season on the Edge - John Skinner
• Art of Surfcasting with Clam Chunks, Zeno
• Striper Chronicles - Leo Orsi

What are some other books out there, maybe anything new for this year?

A whole book just about fishing Clam Chunks!!!??? WOW :)

striper strategies by DJ Muller... Great book, since it covers a wide range of methods to catch bass from the surf...

And the striper chronicles by leo Orsi is a great book... (not a how to)... its a great read... you feel like youre fishing while reading this book... *(fill a windex bottle with salt water and spray it at yourself every few pages... adds to the effect)

New this year was Dave Kinney's book on the Derby- The Big One. I would recommend that on a crappy winter day.

I think that Jim White's book Monster Shallow Water Stripers is a good book especially for guys newer to surfcasting.

how about FrRank Daignault's books? They look interesting.

If I could only get one which would you recommend?

20 Years on the Cape - Interesting book

I agree with JohnR , 20 years has a ton of info, but the devil is in the details, Read carefully it holds a ton of info, tides,times spots. It's all there but not obviously.

I just finished Codfish, Dogfish, Mermaids and Frank by Skip DeBrusk.

It's a good read about a teenager working/learning about life on a fishing boat out of Plymouth in the 50's.

Right now I'm reading In Fisherman's Ice Fishing Secrets....after that ,don't know

It is not saltwater based, but for first rate literature with a fishing theme try Jerry Dennis. He has two collections of short stories "A Place on the Water", and "The River Home". Very, good stuff.

I'm reading The Real Frank Zappa Book:) I will probably reread Reading The Water again if i get some time. Night Tides is a good book too.

This book is very good. I finished it last winter on vacation. I highly recommend it. I just lent it to a bud.

Having read it before, I'm skimming through some chapters in Zeno's The Art of Surfcasting . . . If you can find a copy, Post's Reading the Water is excellent.

I just read Cape Cod Fisherman by Phil Schwind again. Interesting fishing story starting in the 1930s and ending around the 60s.

I have read both of Zeno's books. Both very informative

I just finished John Skinner's "A Season on the Edge" and enjoyed it very much

I am about halfway through DJ Muller's "The Surfcaster's Guide to the Striper Coast"

After that I have 3 more books currently on my desk to read..they are;

"The Ultimate Guide to fishing with bucktails"
"Striper Chronicles"
"Surfcaster's Quest"

I also have a couple books by Frank Daignault on my Christmas wish list....Eastern Tides and Striper Surf

I'd also like to read "Night Tides", "The Big One", "Fishing New England", and "bass from the Beach volume 2"

Reading during the winter is my only salvation 'til the spring run

Just as an FYI...... DJ Muller will be one of our speakers at the Plum Island Surfcasters Fundraiser this coming February.

One of my personal goals is to start ice fishing this winter season...hence, I am going to pick up a copy of: "In Fisherman's Ice Fishing Secrets" Thanks the post!!!

"Something's Fishy" by Ted Williams...expertly researched and written stuff about fisheries management with a bit of quick witted humor. Its a compilation of his past works. The stuff on striped bass is a must read for all.

Been reading "Walden" too...its pretty deep and my shallow mind cannot absorb it all at once, but hey, I just read the same page a few times and it begins to sink in.

Plenty of Dr. Suess with the kids too...

as John said 20 years on the Cape is the best.

Just read The Big One. Interesting stuff about the MV tourny.

MY all time favorite and I have over 100 books on striper fishing, is Reading the Water.

Can any one attend this or is it just for your fishing club only? I fished plum island a few times this year from the surf. Love the area. Would love to hear DJ Muller speak at your fundraiser

Just read Walden not too long ago myself. Cant believe I didnt do it sooner! Good read and gives you plenty to think about when it comes to your daily life.

I started Into Thin Air (thought I wouldnt be able to put it down after Into the Wild but its not as enthralling to me I guess) and after that the next winter read will be The Maine Woods.

Nothing new on the agenda....still trying to get through some of the classics and such....

I'll probably re-read Striper by John Cole, some chapters from Striped Bass Fishing by Woolner and Lyman and a few of the selections in the Hemingway on Fishing compilation.

Re-read / study some chapters in The Fisherman's Ocean

I'm surprised to see a few people praise / recommend The Big One. I found it to be very poorly written and didn't like it much at all. Maybe it just wasn't my style of writing.

This is a good book - New England Stripers - it's an anthology of some of the best stories from On The Water Magazine's early years. There's some of Flaptail's writing in it also...Amazon, On The Water, and I sell it....

Andy Lemar's interview in ^^^^^ helped me out when I started fishing eels... Great read.

The Founding Fish...by John Mc Phee
 

Saxitilis is NOT John Mc Phee's choice to garner his title. Rather, this is a story about the American shad. The book is more than the fish; this is good literature, written by an acklaimed American author of more than 25 books.

Not that its striper related but I really enjoyed the Hungry Ocean by Linda Greenlaw....but i guess it was right up my ally....

I read "Reading the Water" when I was 10 and you can apply that book almost anywhere.

I've been enjoying Charley Soares column at the end of the OTW issues. Hope to get Stemming the Tide for Xmas and definitely Walking On Water when it comes out.

Spray. These are the definitive reviews. And if you
don't agreed with that you don't read much.

John Cole's (deceased) book "Striper" is the best of
them all for a good winter read. His second book
"Fishing came first" is a second good read. I believe
there is a review of Zeno's book by me on S-B home
page. See youse on da beach.

Don't forget Shinning Tides
an oldtime classic but hell of a read
