Block or Cutty ?

Which would be your choice for an extended fishing trip ? -spring

Lets say you had 2 weeks to fish either Island . No you can't split 1 & 1 has to be 2 weeks at one .
Reasons- for choice .

eastendlu 03-12-2010 02:07 PM

Block to many red sox fans on cutty.:devil2::rotf2::rotf2:

eskimo 03-12-2010 02:07 PM

M, depends what dates your talking. If you go to Cutty let me know. Ferry is across the street from me.

JFigliuolo 03-12-2010 02:08 PM

How early in the spring? One BIG reason for block? If the fishing sucks you may just go insane on Cutty for 2 weeks. ALthough I could live there no problem... I'm simple.

luds 03-12-2010 02:19 PM

IMO definitely go with Block if it's 2 weeks. Nice to be able to go out to a bar or for something to eat to mix things up.

Joe 03-12-2010 02:22 PM

I don't think I could handle two weeks in that B&B on Cutty.

The Iceman 6 03-12-2010 02:28 PM

Block!

From someone that spends a lot of time on Cutty, I would highly, highly recommend the Block option for several reasons.
Block is a hell va lot bigger with more options. You can have a vehicle
Cutty is tough, tough conditions. Lot of walking.
There are other options on block, ie booze and food and fishing supplies. (eels)
There is NOTHING on Cutty. You have to bring EVERYthing for a 2 week stay with you.
Last year, the fishing on Cutty sucked. Block Island was much, much better.
If the weather is bad on Cutty, it might as well be like a prison sentence. No where to go, nothing to do. No booze available. Big gamble.
I plan on getting back to Block more often this year.

Goose 03-12-2010 02:47 PM

I'd say Block. imo shore fishing gradually heats up at cutty with the temps, its to hit or miss and if you do get into'um its probably not going to be the fish cutty is known for. I've wetsuited block a 2-3 times with cow hunter fairly early in the spring although the water is still cold(especially on the incoming) the fish where there(size too). I know for a fact without the experience and wetsuit you may get the skunk. Also, Block is more protected by the wind giving you more options then cutty. I know either place can and has produced at any given time. If I remember correctly it was either 1st or 2nd week in June

Swimmer 03-12-2010 02:48 PM

The answer seems like a no brainer.

Nebe 03-12-2010 02:50 PM

block

RIJIMMY 03-12-2010 02:54 PM

Definitely Cutty!
I never fished either but there always has to be a dissenting voice.

jeez, spring is kinda vague !! are u talking may or june ?

mfm22 03-12-2010 03:15 PM

I'm open time wise may or june [most productive ?]
This is half fantasy 1 week is more realistic ..but I'm buggin out and I don't mind the solitude .
I don't need a night life =fishing ,no alcohol=no hangovers [ok maybe a few beers ]
I was at Cutty last season ..Love the place .. But .. you may as well be at alcatraz.
As noted you need to bring everything so need to be selective.
I would try both places but would rather put some time into one .
Block may have more areas to fish ,not sure of spring in either island

Back Beach 03-12-2010 03:19 PM

CUTTY!

Seeing all you guys are recommending Block, I know where to go this season for a little peace and quiet.

PaulS 03-12-2010 03:49 PM

I'd kill myself if I was on Cutty for 7 days w/no fish and no hot woman.

Clammer 03-12-2010 04:15 PM

If your talking about two weeks to catch fish ??? & you say spring ......... to me that,s April. May & part of June .If this is the case I would choose neither . IMO its too early for both islands ....waaaaaay too early for Cutty :fishin:

Sea Dangles 03-12-2010 04:18 PM

I think S-B.com members had a great year at Cutty last year.We saw pics of Tynan,MikeL,Throwing Timber as well as their humble host Redlite all holding cows. All this and it was a slow year, what if this is a better year?
That being said,I'll take the Block.

Me also Mike. Now that I am retired and cancer free (at least for the present time) I am strong enough to do the Block again. I plan on several shore trips. Just a little too far for my boat.

intrepid24 03-12-2010 04:29 PM

if cutty, focus on the north side......and toward penik
never leave out kannapit

Pete F. 03-12-2010 04:40 PM

I'd go to Montauk and save Cutty or Block for the fall.

tattoobob 03-12-2010 04:56 PM

What Pete just said, or Block last 2 weeks of June

Paul And Mike both of you let me know when your going over and I can join in on a couple of trips, seeing there is no beach left around here

Clogston29 03-12-2010 06:10 PM

definately block. 2 weeks would feel like 2 years on cutty in the spring - nothing is really open yet, not that there's much there even during the summer. ifthe fishing isn't absolutely insane, you'll probably go crazy out there. block offers much more fishing diversity, as well as beaches, restraunts, coffee shops and bars - and deer ass if you're into that kind of thing :hihi:.

numbskull 03-12-2010 06:14 PM

The Vineyard is worth considering as well.

JohnnyD 03-12-2010 07:11 PM

There's never any fish up here... You New Yorkers should stay down in New York.:devil2:

If you go early in the spring, there's only about a dozen people around. You can probably show up with enough guys to outnumber the locals :D.

You got it Bob. Good to see you back on the Board. I haven't seen you post too much.

Islander77 03-13-2010 09:53 AM

Here is a shock... Block man hands down any time of year.. why cause if there aint no fish to be caught there is always a place to get some wamring beverage and chase some other kind of 2 leged fish.... lmao

Nebe 03-13-2010 10:32 AM

Another thing Block has that cuttyhunk doesnt have is a vast salt pond ecosystem with lots of shallows to get things started early out there... At Cuttyhunk, your depending on migratory fish coming in from where ever, but at the block in the spring, there is bait in places that will hold fish- Squid, sand eels, spearing... its all in that pond. So many rush out to the beaches to fish in the spring looking for fish and dont take into consideration that there is some serious activity going on in that salt pond.
or at least thats my theory. :grins:

Dick Durand 03-13-2010 11:42 AM

Not that this affects surfcasters and other fishermen, but I've read that authorities are already planning measures to curb the baccanalian frenzy common on the Block, especially during summer holiday weekends. This will also includes mainland police who will be watching those who have gotten off the ferry drive out of town.

There was an article in the BI Times last summer about a big bash on the beach near the end of Cresent Beach by the Surf Hotel. It was one of those things where the word went out about it and the boats were loaded with people coming over for it - a lot already drunk getting off the boat. It got to be so big the police were overwhelmed. The cops interviewed said it's tough for them because they can't call in help from other towns when things get crazy like that. #^&#^&#^&#^& maybe you read that?

Islander, how many police officers do they have out there in the summer these days? Back in the day they had maybe 5 in the summer - 2 staties and 3 locals including the chief. Now they have something like what, 15? And they need more.

Dick Durand 03-13-2010 01:31 PM

I did read some stuff last summer that pertained to certain watering holes on island as well as the commotion on the ferry. While I can't recall the source, the crackdown info is more current (maybe the Narragansett Times). The BI police expect reinforcements this summer around July 4th, for example.

As much as I love to fish Cutty, (and I have been there all by my loansome for a couple of days) I'm thinking the second week might start to look like The Shining.
