Sea Dangles 03-23-2010 10:21 PM

Do you also make a six tube bag?

How much did you spend on materials?

JohnnyD 03-23-2010 11:09 PM

Very awesome. Nice work!

Neat! Pondered making one for a while. To do list is just that though.

I like the configuration. Same as a single row yet looks more compact.

The most annoying thing about all plug bags ,to me is fighting the flap .. Got jam it in behind while your working a plug out, then surf, whatever makes it fall forward when your half way out with your plug .. pia .. Always wished the flap went forward ,,yea but then it wouldn't close secure ..i know ,. gotta be a way .. Your square design could be a side flap .. just jam those other flaps inside .. Would love to see a more easy access bag .. Did you sew that ?

2na 03-24-2010 07:13 AM

so your true avocation is to be a seamstress?

That's what I would suggest. That bag is impressive.

JohnR 03-24-2010 08:18 AM

Will all of the garage plug bag builders taking root these days we may need a new forum: Got Bags? Custom Tackle Bags, Curtains, and Seamstressnessing

Seriously - looks sweet George. Now embed a pigs ear into it so it can be retrieved by the local dog.

SAUERKRAUT 03-24-2010 08:38 AM

George, you have just destroyed my surf-life long love affair with my surplus U.S. Army gasmask bags.

Mr. Sandman 03-24-2010 08:44 AM

You have WAY too much time on your hands...you need a boat and some kids.

DZ 03-24-2010 08:45 AM

George,
That is one real nice live eel bag - I thought you were strictly a plugger?

All kidding aside - nice work. Is it dacron?

DZ

eastendlu 03-24-2010 08:50 AM

aaaargghhhh, you beat me to it...:wall:

zimmy 03-24-2010 09:06 AM

that is great. I have been working on a design and am ready to make the pattern. I was also wondering if you used dacron and if so, how hard is it to sew?

numbskull 03-24-2010 09:13 AM

I used military spec 1000 denier nylon, Dennis. Might try one out of 10oz dacron sail cloth (but I think this codura stuff is tougher). The tubes and end caps were the toughest part to find (easy in retrospect, however). Bought an ancient heavy weight homestyle Singer sewing machine, which was adequate but far from ideal.

It actually turns out to be not that difficult. Figuring out the layout, cutting stuff, and getting the assembly sequence right is harder than the sewing part (which obviously I suck at). Thank god for seam rippers. The material cost is not much, maybe 20-30 bucks a bag, half of which is the tubes. The equipment cost to do it right, however, could get steep. It was fun and I'm sure I'll make some more..........once I finish the pink frilly tutu that Back Beach needs to fish a plug.

Joe 03-24-2010 09:27 AM

How much in doctor-by-the-hour-bucks is it worth?

ProfessorM 03-24-2010 09:51 AM

a little old man in New Beige would be proud of you.
Looks great. You didn't waste any time getting that done .

Hey Mike, I still think it would make a better eel tote. Has nice belt loops, leader/eel rag pocket. I'm sure it has some grommets for drainage. Who would have thought George would come up with developing the first custom eel tote? Do you think George would make us one? It will now be forever known as the "Numbskull Eel Tote". Aquaskinz or VS might be copying it soon ;)

I tried my wife's machine once a long time ago. I made a hole and bird'snest combo in my shirt. Took about a second. Wicked nice bag, Numby. I may ask for lessons.

WoodyCT 03-24-2010 08:16 PM

Great Job Numby

Seems to be a project more and more guys are tackling these days.

A buddy in CSA is doing them, and I think I'll give it a try this summer once school is out and I have time to kill.

luds 03-24-2010 09:02 PM

Wow! What are you going to use for a strap? That's and important part. I hate when they double over.
