Canal Today

Hi All, Stopped by the Canal at the Herring Run on my way home from the Vineyard-Horrible fishing on the Vineyard-Found loads of nice fish on top. Mix of blues and stripers. Some of the bass were huge.40 + lbs at least with small to medium fish mixed in. Some nice blues 12 to 15 lb mixed in got a nice one. was told its been like this since Sat morning with few being lucky enough to get a hook up on the big bass but a few in the 40's have been landed. I put the plug right on a few nice fish . They'd take a look but wouldn't slam the plug.Saw loads of bait large an small from the shore all the way out to the middle. Had to leave but it was still going at 2pm when we left.Gonna be back there Wed daybreak. Ron:uhuh::fishin:

Thats what you get for fishing with Hawkeye. You shouldn't be going to MVC meetings about fishing piers when thier is fishing to be done.

I found pletty of fish on the Vineyard. Just no bones. Mucho fickle albies.

Plenty of bass and blues to be caught.

Ron I hope you called the globe and herald with this broadcast. I am sure they didn't know anything about it.

BigFish 10-18-2010 08:33 PM

He is on his way back to Maine so he don't care!:devil2:

A lack of sense are where posts like this originate from... I'll never understand it.

You forgot to mention what pole you were at, what you were throwing and the type of retrieve. :deadhorse:

Sea Dangles 10-19-2010 07:03 AM

WOW,I guess this means there are fish in the canal still.
Now we are going to deal with the wetsuit and kayak crowd.

JohnR 10-19-2010 07:05 AM

Reports guys, reports, they are probably off Montalk right now.

It's one thing to say the fishing at the canal was good today, it's another to say spot x at the canal was loaded with big fish. :wall:

Unfortunately, it's always gonna be one of the spots that gets burned because of the easy access and it's reputation.

I just got a call from a friend who's down there today. He said that it's more crowded than he's ever seen it and the fishing isn't even good. That's exactly why reports on that place are worthless. The fish move and what's good one tide is probably gonna be sucky the next one.

BassDawg 10-19-2010 10:15 AM

why say anything at ALL?

because your done, and you've had yer fill, and your on your way back to MAINE?? imho, keep it between yer amigos and pm's.

although it may look BIG,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,it's not THAT big when yer standing shouldertoshouldertoshoulder and there is NO parking because some YEAH WHOOOO from Theditch Isonfire, ME wants to make sure that everyone knows he caught a fish there!!

rants over,,,,,,,,,,,,,,going into ghost zombie mode~~

clambelly 10-19-2010 10:29 AM

i was there this morning. it wasn't that crowded. and by the looks of the fishing today, it will be less crowded tomorrow...

timmah 10-19-2010 11:34 AM

I find it's best to fish at high tide during the max ebb about 3 hours after slack. I alway kill'em during that tide.

Back Beach 10-19-2010 11:44 AM

40# bass and 20# blues all day today...didn't even need a rod, just a pitchfork.

I like the High because it's easier to troll my clambrella from the access road.

redlite 10-19-2010 12:31 PM

Had doubles all morning floating down the middle with unweighted sluggos on the bottom. Both poles goin off at the same time. Was tough treadin water with a rod in each hand, but I managed.
So many fish that if I had plugs tied to my boot laces, I could have had a 4-way hook up.........

Diggin Jiggin 10-19-2010 12:42 PM

I love this work week daytime stuff. Only 20 more years till retirement :smash:

I love reading threads like this. BassDawg--you're spot on.

Don't know the canal well and have only fished it a few times and never when it's been going off. I will not be blazing a trail to either of the rotaries, so maybe there will be a little more elbow room for you all.

Hope it keeps up for a while, but put a few back so I can catch when they're swimming on by down my way.

aram

There were all of 6 vehicles parked at the herring run around 8:15 this morning, when I drove by on my way to work.

And not a bird to be seen anywhere from there up to the bend to the west.

Back Beach 10-19-2010 01:27 PM

Seriously, I'm the last dope you'd want to confide in regarding canal info.

I managed to miss every daytime blitz that took place this year and I know there were dozens of them... its almost embarassing.

I had the "shoulda been here yesterday" going pretty much all season at the canal.

Granted all these daytime blitzes are simply googan fests featuring canal bikes, van staals, cell phones, and pencil poppers, :hee: but I'd like to cash in on some fish just once, even if an often celebrated highliner like me has to rub elbows with the lowly daytime crowd...:banano:

Adam_777 10-19-2010 02:44 PM

I flew over the canal today and I could see massive schools of large piling up on either side.If I had more line on my reel I would have trolled from the skies.

thank god all those supa cows I kept hookin liked to swim up current. Spared me from having to swim back up current for new drifts over pods of fish...........

Slipknot 10-19-2010 04:02 PM

There are no fish in the canal

they are in the ocean

carry on

Liv2Fish 10-19-2010 04:35 PM

East End - Saturday into sunday, I fished all 3 west to east change overs and two+ hours into the east on all 3 tides.

I caught 1 bass that was about twice as big as the plug. I saw only one other fish taken and it was about 22".

I fished bombers on the edges at the slack, buck tails, crips and slugos of all colors in the hole and nothing.

bloocrab 10-19-2010 04:40 PM

I have a few questions for you Canal sharpies and floaties...although I cringe at the thought of being a Canal floatie...like this redlite character...

Is it possible to catch fish at the canal at night during the fall run or does it all happen during the day?

It's a very confusing place...how come when the wind blows east, the tide still runs west?

Does the lower water column flow in unison with the upper water column or does it take a while for the top to catch up to the bottom or vice-a-versa?

If I snap a jig off on the East end, why doesn't it ever wash ashore on the West end,,, even when the tide is pushing that way?

Why did they remove the porta-john from the middle area? Was it due to the amount of floaties drifting by?

Why are there sea-gulls painted on the concrete? Is that to mimic an ongoing blitz from the other side??

Speaking of the other side, why are the fish always busting on that side?? ...and when they are, why are the guys on that side still trying to cast to the opposite side?

Why are there ropes every 40 feet leading into the water?? Is that to secure the canal so it doesn't float away??

Someone should write a "Canal for dummies" thread....lot of us on here. :uhuh:...I know I could use the help,,,,,,,and what in God's name is a TROLL?

tysdad115 10-19-2010 06:03 PM

There's columns in the water? Do they hold up the bridges bloo ?

One of the nice thing about information sites is that they,re there to pass information.Love to see someone hide the canal. Never knew it was just there for a few to enjoy but some are just plain that way. On my way back there in an hr or so. Hope there are still some fish for a drive by. As far as spot burning wellllll the herring run kinda stands out like Wasque Rip on the Vineyard and the Merrimac River LOL. Ron

BigFish 10-19-2010 06:39 PM

The Herring Run is a spot burn....just as it would be if you named any of the other named spots there or a pole number. Problem many have is that they actually put in their time there and work hard at it and then someone posts a report like that and all the report chasers show up and reap the rewards having never slogged through the down days and put in untold hours there! I have no problem mentioning the canal......but you have to name a spot??
