Internet speed test
Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test
Just so we can see where everyone is these days take this speed test and post your results and the type of provider. I live in kind of a remote spot and just have normal comcast cable, (not xfinity yet) so my speed is probably on the slow-adequate side of things. I would like to see what the Fios and xfinity and other providers are doing. I get 33 Mbps download and 6 Mbps upload (comcast cable (normal) Martha's Vineyard) |
that's pretty friggin fast download
I have 19 down and 6 up |
33.1 Down
6.4 Up Comcast/Xfinity, normal (not business). Not sure what you mean by Xfinity offering different, that is just Comcast's new branding name "Xfinity". Looks the Vineyard gets same as mainland... |
Xfinity/comcast
Ping 18ms Down 18.72Mbps Up 3.57 |
I've got 20.81 and 3.20, seems like something is wrong here (maybe they limit the bandwidth available in Easton and Mansfield:confused:) I noticed after having the power supply replaced and installing a adobe update I now have to wait almost 2 minutes after clicking turn off computer in lower right corner before the next box appears that allows me to chose standby/ shut down/ restart, 2 minutes:fury: which used to be not even 10 seconds:wall:. I am so sick and tired of sites having the ability to hinder my computers performance through cookies or whatever other spy ware type BS causing a loss in productivity. I don't know what to do and will probably spend money to have it looked at because I am going crazy waiting to shut my computer off or put it on standby....2 minutes is too long to wait to put it on standby, any help appreciated.

a no fios area i presume jake
sometimes you can switch (reverse)the order of preferred servers so that the Back up server is first and the normal server is last so your on the LESS busy server and gain speed that way |

Wow FIOS is fast. What are you paying per month? I pay about $50 for Comcast here in FL.

we pay 60 also
we upgraded the tv package recently and they were supposed to raise our speed to the next level it was 25/25 so it should be either 30 or 35 now not sure why I don't even get much past 20:confused: maybe it's the time of day or something, or the wires suck http://www.speedtest.net/result/1223551752.png |

Another bit of useful info for the test: hard wired or wireless?
I tested hard wired 3-4x throughout day with little change on Comcast 33U/6.5D. Figured I'd test the UMass Boston feed, wireless connection: Ping 24ms, Download 24.7, Upload 22.8 Pretty damn fast! Early morning so no one here using. I'll post test of this same computer via wireless on my home network later today. |
PRbuzz,
With regard to the "branding" I went up to the comcast office here to swap out a couple of remotes and while I was there I asked about my plan (tv/3phonelines/internet) to see if what I had was current and makes sense and asked about getting xfinity for some of the dvr features. She said it is not available on the island yet, that it requires an upgrade to some systems here and and that will not take place until mid-late April. I asked her what it means in terms of added features, and one of the added features she said will be "much higher Internet speeds", among other interactive features and a total redesign of on-demand stuff. I asked when...late April. According to her it is more than re-branding but if you ask me it looks an incremental upgrade and they are re-packaging it under a new name. |
26Mbps down / 3Mbps up - FIOS. Suppose I need to change that.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO first of all..you don't need all those friggan updates trying to update while your surfin the net trying to do whatever ADOBE is the absolute worst program that is constantly trying to update every time you look at the wall,,,,off it goes.. so go into control panel and shut off automatic updates (for now) then when you have time ......... you can turn it back on (theres an icon in there if your running win XP) also, you want to download the free program called "whats running" which allows you to terminate processes and applications at will also showing you every single ip address your connected to and every program that's running ESPECIALLY in the start menu which will slow a computer down to a crawl --> LIMIT THOSE www.whatsrunning.com |
Ping was 54
Download speed was 19.23 Upload was 3.70 Joys of living in western mass |

DO NOT disable automatic updates unless you PROMISE and FAITHFULLY download and run them manually every few days when available. If you cannot successfully do that then keep auto updates. ED:

I totally disagree JOHN
AND, i do not like you condescending attitude towards my computer knowledge at all ..........
as i have been to the same school you went to only TWICE and i have close to $5000 in computer books alone i have never smoked CRACK-> didn't appreciate the reference i said turn off auto updates (for now) to indicate and see if this solves the (your) problem !.) not turn them off forever- GEESCH 2.) they can be rescheduled to run when your not using the PC like at 4: am 3.) i specifically mentioned ADOBE not the microsoft updates ||||which can be configured separately ||||| 4.) i suggested he look at all programs running with a beautiful FREE program that i find extremely useful 5.) i KNOW your method for diagnosing computer slow-downs is completely by the book using NO insightful or creative thinking - its samo samo MS 1,2,3, Most people have WAY to many programs running in their start menu to begin with , so it's a logical place to EXPLORE it's EXPLORING JOHN _learning to explore your personal computer.... LISTEN AND LEARN oh wizard of "Microsoft RULES" sorry.................. if i ILL advised one of your clients :fury: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- NOW i have to spend considerable time meditating away much hostility ...........................i'm outta here.................................. |
John...
How can I speed up my internet. My figures seem way too low. Tried to upload a 1.5gb video to Youtube (only 8 minutes long) and it's on hour 4. Thanks! |

Raven - I used "digitaL" and I used smileys: I don't want to come across as condescending at all but you need to understand that sometimes your computer recommendations are not the best. Some of it is OK, some of it isn't. Some if it may be misleading. !.) not turn them off forever- GEESCH No need to turn them off, period. Much safer that way. Yes, there is a chance some patch will crash a system. BEST method is to autodownload but let YOU choose when to install. Only do this if YOU PROMISE to do them no longer if they are a week old (give others a chance to break 'em) AND you know there is not a patch fixing a critical vulnerability under major exploit at the time. Servers different story but someone actively manages those. 2.) they can be rescheduled to run when your not using the PC like at 4: am Just leave autoupdate on. 3.) i specifically mentioned ADOBE not the microsoft updates ||||which can be configured separately ||||| Just keep it updated, and flash, and Java 4.) i suggested he look at all programs running with a beautiful FREE program that i find extremely useful Half of beautiful free programs do more damage than they fix 5.) i KNOW your method for diagnosing computer slow-downs is completely by the book using NO insightful or creative thinking - its samo samo MS 1,2,3, Its not that way at all, I use more creative thinking than you can imagine but I've also been doing this professionally for 15 years for organizations from 5 people to 300 to 3,000. We love you kid, but I can assure you my computer advice is superior. Gardening, farming? I gladly and quickly defer to you. BobT - what do you have for Internet? 1.5GB is a HUGE file and you should probably process before uploading. |
The new reality TV series sure to capture Nielson ratings of at least 0.00000001% viewers?

John -
I've got Verizon DSL. I know...not the best but Charter almost set my house on fire and I'll NEVER deal with them again. How do I process a file? |
