sb.com kids day

we seem to have plenty of dads w/ kids here. we should do a day somewhere. maybe find a place that holds alot of scup

fishbones 08-02-2011 08:53 AM

That sounds like a great idea and a good way to get people together.

JohnR 08-02-2011 09:06 AM

Full. Of. WIN!

WESTPORTMAFIA 08-02-2011 09:43 AM

We are in! My son rocks a spiderman custom 2 foot with a sweet push button reel.

tysdad115 08-02-2011 09:46 AM

I'm in too, but we'll all have to listen to Tyler complain about catching small fish. He's been spoiled.

Just tell him catching small fish is a great way to obtain live bait for the bigger fish. You can never have too many skills when it comes to fishing.
Great idea Niko!

Chubby-Chaser 08-02-2011 09:59 AM

This sounds like a good time, count me in.

niko 08-02-2011 10:03 AM

how about the weekend of aug 13/14th? any suggestions on locations? sakonnett - as i remember that jetty is pretty productive

MarshCappa 08-02-2011 10:20 AM

Great idea! Unfortunately the grandparents will have my son that weekend so mom and dad can get a little r&r in Newport.

I will try to do this. My 4 yr old will love it, just going to be tough leaving his 2 1/2 yr old sidekick behind. He worships his older brother.

JohnR 08-02-2011 11:50 AM

What are some possible kid friendly locations? RI / Mass line area? Newport to Buzzards Bay?

chefchris401 08-02-2011 12:46 PM

in newport you could easily van stant pier, lots of room and parking, good bottom fishing spot.

on the jamestown side you could hit the old bridge area, theres a pier on that side.

sakonnet break wall is usually a good spot this time, albies, fluke, scup, bass and blues, you never know what your getting out there.

hope that helps.

great idea niko.

WESTPORTMAFIA 08-02-2011 01:23 PM

Sakonnet wouldn't be good for young ones at all. I'll see what I can come up with. How about a beach spot? A little safer than a Jetty.

If we do an easy beachy spot you can bring him. He can hang with Trent.

niko 08-02-2011 02:00 PM

Easy beachy is fine as long as it is a fishy spot. Nothing worse than taking a bunch of kids fishing and not catching - thats why I was thinking scup

rickhern 08-02-2011 04:43 PM

Great idea Paul. Anyone know if any of the scup boats are catching?

PRBuzz 08-02-2011 04:47 PM

Scup still to be found around Cleveland Ledge!

how about we shoot for sunday august 14th

BigBo 08-02-2011 07:13 PM

If my daughter doesn't make other plans, I'd like to get me and my grandson in on this.

Goose 08-02-2011 07:50 PM

mattapoisett has plenty scup on two peirs and snapper blues. Sometimes blue fish and sand sharks are common

Hookedagain 08-02-2011 08:31 PM

We're in!! Jake would love it, as we fish daily (fresh water) but he wants to go scupping. Tons of scup in the Taunton River, mostly boat spot though. Any week end in Aug is fine.

I'm definitely in. How about Ned's Point in Mattapoisett? Not sure if it's resident only - lived there as a kid and spent every summer day possible on the peirs. Filled a 5 gallon bucket with scup and forgot to tell mom that I put it in the basement. :yak5:

iamskippy 08-02-2011 10:30 PM

anyone willing to adopt me? i learn fast!

great idea Niko!

Goose 08-03-2011 06:25 AM

Ned's point is a good place for a gathering and short drive to the piers.

niko 08-03-2011 07:43 AM

These piers sound interesting. Plenty of parking?

teezer 08-03-2011 07:37 PM

sounds fun!!

niko 08-04-2011 01:10 PM

the piers in mattapoisett seem to be the winner. i'm not familiar w/ the spot so someone answer a few questions. plenty of parking? access to bathrooms? just in case. do the piers have railings or are they more like comm piers? we should probably give the harbormaster a call and just clue him in that we are invading the pier

whiplash 08-04-2011 01:30 PM

Parking on the piers are supposedly for residents only w/ sticker. If it's a busy weekend they get a bit snitty. But there is plenty of street parking. There are restrooms at the Harbormasters shack, no railings . No sticker needed for Ned's point and there are picnic tables and such. Buzzards Bay Anglers Club holds their Scup Cup on the pier every year. We are trying to do it again in Sept this year - watch for it in club announcements.

niko 08-04-2011 07:12 PM

thanks whiplash - good stuff

Raider Ronnie 08-04-2011 07:22 PM

If interest in getting some groups up to Boston harbor I would be willing to help out with my boat.

MakoMike 08-05-2011 07:57 AM

I too would be willing to help out with my boat if we have groups near Pt. Judith. Carpenter's bar, near the Ocean Mist usually holds scup at high tide this time of year. You might want to wait until after Aug. 7th when the limit goes to 40 fish per angler on party/charter boats. At today's 10 fish per angler limit no one is fishing for them.

niko 08-05-2011 08:05 AM

Very generious of you Ronnie. See everyone - the grinch does have a heart. I would love to get Dominic out w/ you sometime. Can we set something up for next month or do you think you'll be too busy w/ charters then. Maybe we can recruit another boat or 2

So, are we in for Mattapoisett? Date?

As I mentioned, I spent many years there as a kid fishing these piers and would love to share it with my kids. It would be nice to meet some of you guys as well.

Some recommendations:

There were always plenty of snapper blues on the top pier in the photo. This one has a wall to keep the shorties from falling off the pier. We used to use bread and a piece of screen to attract and catch silver side minnows then live line them on a bobber.

The long middle pier probably fishes better but I would definitely recommend life jackets as it's a long way down and a long swim to an easy exit point - trust me, i did it - once...

The other two piers were always too convoluted to fish - either boat rigging in the way or crusty old boat owners not wanting kids fishing around their boat. They didn't allow fishing from the floats for sure - I met the harbor master a few times over that one.

I say we pick a date and have at it. Not sure of bait shops in the area. It's probably best to just bring some worms and squid strips from your local shop.

niko 08-06-2011 10:51 AM

let's do it next weekend. sunday august 14th at the mattapoisett piers. i'll bring a bunch of squid. looking forward to it. dominic and i are planning on being there at 7.

niko 08-07-2011 08:42 AM

i've got a tote full of kids pfds if anyone needs one. i'll bring it. who's in for sure so i can give the harbormaster a heads up

fishbones 08-07-2011 11:42 AM

Looks like my son and I are in. Gonna be tough getting him out the door that early, but he's excited so he might get his butt in gear. I've never fished that spot, but my dad used to own a property on Water St. and I'd sometimes see people fishing from tyhe piers.

Thanks for putting this together Niko and Liv2fish!

niko 08-07-2011 12:08 PM

you don't have to get there that early fb, come at 8 or 9 - dominic will be up w/ the sun bugging me to go. he's excited to meet other kids that fish. i'll bring some minnow traps and some chum - we'll get every fish in the area hanging around that pier :)

fishbones 08-08-2011 08:46 AM

What type of gear/rigs should we bring?

Hookedagain 08-08-2011 06:41 PM

Jake and I are in....for sure!! He hasn't stopped talking about it. I also have a minnow trap I can bring and we have a bunch of bait too. Sound like a great day, see you there.
